It’s early, it’s raining and Patrick Murphy is at the Bristol train station seeking votes. It’s his 37th birthday. He’s smiling, upbeat and fighting for his political life. the 8th District in Bucks County, so clearly property of the Democrats just six months ago, is a tossup two weeks before the mid-term election.

Republican Mike Fitzpatrick, whom Murphy defeated in 2006, is running a hard, scrappy campaign.

Their debates have drawn mostly partisan crowds and, with both candidates sticking largely to talking points, have been draws. recent polls swing a few points either way for both men. Dead heat. Murphy’s party, fearing a national wipeout, pulled its money for congressional TV spots from the Philadelphia market last week, to spend the cash in embattled districts at even greater peril of defeat. Murphy was unaware of this until I read him an e-mail sent to me by an editor.

"well," he said soberly, "that’s not a very good birthday present."

On the train platform, he summed the top three issues: "Jobs, jobs and jobs." the pitch he believes will send him back to D.C. for a third term is this: "In the worst economic times since the Great Depression, I brought 3,000 jobs to Bucks County. And – we have to start making things in this country again."

Bristol is friendly Democratic turf for Murphy. Most commuters give him warm greetings. but their reticence makes it unclear how many are buying what he’s selling, which is more of the same.

"we need to give it (Obama’s economic policies) more time," he said. "things are trending in the right direction. more private sector jobs for nine straight months."

"You a Democrat? I’m votin’ for you," Chris Tammaro said to Murphy.

Tammaro, 28, said he is enrolled in a technical school, and is collecting unemployment and welfare. He’d be destitute without it.

"I’m not lazy; I want to work; I want to better myself. the Democrats seem to understand people in my position better," he said.

Still, the frustration and anger that Murphy has encountered among his recession-weary constituents is remarkable.

"Hi, I’m Patrick Murphy, your local congressman," he told a woman waiting for a train to the city. she did not miss a beat telling him that she will not vote for him – and not because she prefers Republicans. his voting record is almost always with his party, she said.

"I have to choose the lesser of two evils, and I’m sorry to say that to you," she said.

"I sleep fine at night because I know I vote my conscience. I do what is right for my district and our country," Murphy said.

"I appreciate that," she said.

"I brought 3,000 jobs to Bucks County," he said.

"well, you know what the problem is," the woman said. "We’re sending all of our jobs overseas. My own company is now doing it. Sending work to India. We’ve gone multi-national. I feel like I’m working for the enemy. And I wonder when my job will be sent overseas."

Murphy delivered a blast of facts and figures on legislation he supports to stop outsourcing.

"I’m trying my best," he said.

Murphy greeted Paul Frietag, a retired golf course greenskeeper from Falls.

"got a tough race," Murphy said. "Would appreciate your help."

As Murphy departed to greet others, Frietag shook his head.

"I’m probably going to go with the Republicans this time, because the Democrats are making us broke," he said. "I’ve always been a Democrat, but the way they’re spending money, putting us in the hole, it’s gonna affect my grandchildren and their kids, years ahead, you know. They’re not helping us at all. we used to be a country of manufacturers, now we’re a country of buyers from abroad.

"I don’t know what’s gonna become of this country, I really don’t," he said.

Nov. 2 is Election Day. It’s also Murphy’s son’s first birthday. he said he plans to go home after the polls close at 8 p.m. and celebrate with cake.

I asked: will it be the only celebration that night?

Murphy paused, then smiled.

Summit’s Lindsey Eisenreich has returned.

Eisenreich got off to a slow start to the golf season aftermissing most of the summer circuit while recovering from a caraccident in may. She has regained her form and qualified for thestate tournament again this year after winning the inauguralsectional tournament last week with a 2-over-par 74 at CrownePointe Golf course.

“The process was rough and difficult,” Eisenreich said of herjourney back. “I knew I wasn’t going to shoot my best scores at thestart, and I had to calm myself down. I’ve improved so much sincethe start of the season.”

The Class 2 girls MSHSAA golf championship tees off today atTwin Oaks Country Club in Springfield. the Class 1 tournament willbe held at Rivercut Golf course.

Eisenreich, a junior, suffered through the effects of whiplashfollowing her car accident and missed the first two months of thesummer series. that put her behind schedule as the high schoolseason began.

She shot an 82 at the Summit tournament at Crescent Farms earlyin the season. She continued to progress and regain her swing untilshe earned medalist honors at the Suburban South Conferencetournament at Aberdeen with a 76.

At districts, Eisenreich tied for first place, but her score wasa little higher than she is accustomed to shooting. Eisenreichfinished with an 11-over at Camdenton’s Deere Chase, tyingLafayette’s Kelly Lamarche for medalist.

The Deere Chase course proved difficult with big hills and fastgreens. Summit coach Corey Choate said he believes that becomes anadvantage for the state tournament’s Twin Oaks course, which entersthe state rotation for the first time.

“It’s supposed to be tree-lined with sloping and fast greens,”Choate said. “The people I talked to said the greens are verydifficult, and that’s one area she has excelled at. She putted wellat districts.”

Eisenreich got her first concrete taste of Twin Oaks duringSunday’s practice round.

“This week, I practiced driving and visualizing the trees,”Eisenreich said. “I will be looking for club selection and gettinga feel for the greens.”

Choate said he knows Eisenreich has all the shots in her bag tobe competitive, so his approach has been to focus on the short gameand mental approach.

“I don’t see a strength; I just don’t see a weakness,” saidChoate, who is in his first season with the Falcons. “That’s whatit takes to shoot solid scores — consistent with all of it.

“We work on the short game a lot. when good players gettogether, the one that saves strokes around the green is the one togenerally come out on top.”

Eisenreich finished tied for ninth with a 79-84—163 at the Class2 state tournament last year. that second round was disappointingby Eisenreich’s standards, but she said it will have no bearing onthis year’s play.

“I put the bad thoughts behind me and take and learn from it,”said Eisenreich, who missed her freshman season with a wristinjury. “I didn’t know what to expect. Now I’m more confident thanI’ve been in a long time.”

Playing golf for the first time — let alone competitive high school girls golf — is downright frightening.

New players might even hear the theme from “Jaws” swimming in their respective heads.

“These girls come out to learn a very difficult game and then two weeks later we throw them out to the sharks and tell them to play a match,” Antioch High School girls coach John Luis said. “It’s definitely intimidating.”

It took all of three seasons, but the girls from Antioch were finally able to swim comfortably with the big fish.

Buoyed by four seniors, the Panthers had their best Bay Valley Athletic League season in more than a decade, going 6-4 in dual matches and placing third among six teams.

They also placed third in the BVAL Tournament at Lone Tree Golf course on Oct. 18, shooting an 18-hole total of 523, to finish behind Liberty (469) and regular-season champion Deer Valley (471).

The Panthers, led by a 90 from senior no. 1 player Kelsey Cast, edged Heritage (529) and Freedom (540) for third.

Cast, who qualified for next week’s North Coast Section Division I qualifier in Sunol, said the secret to Antioch’s success all season wasn’t really a secret at all.

“This has been by far our best year because we worked so much harder,” she said. “Everyone’s scores steadily improved. it was great to see.”

Toni Herrington, who battled teammate and fellow senior Kaitlyn Davis, for the no. 2 spot on the team all season said the Panthers were simply more driven.

And we’re not talking, tee it up and swing a driver driven.

“I think the seniors felt a much greater sense of urgency than previous years,” she said. “We definitely meshed as a team and definitely had a lot more fun this season.”

It helps to win and the Panthers were able to pull out many matches because Cast was so consistent at the no. 1 spot.

A first baseman on the softball team, Cast just started playing golf as a sophomore but did it only during the fall season. She spent much of the 2010 summer really focusing on swinging the sticks and the hard work paid off.

In six of 10 matches, she either medaled or tied for the top spot, with a best nine-hole round of 38. She had three other rounds at 40.

“She consistently drives the ball in the fairways,” Luis said. “And that always gives her a chance at par.”

Said Cast: “I just think that the extra time on the course really helped. and it helps that the team has improved so much.”

Herrington and Davis have taken opposite routes to shoot scores in the middle to high 40s.

Herrington said her putting was the key to her success, while Davis hits the long ball — as far as anyone on the team. that would be upwards of 230 yards, Luis said.

“Kaitlyn has been amazing,” Herrington said. “She has pumped me up to do better because she’s cranking out drives so far. It’s great to see.”

As far as her game, Herrington said 30 minutes a day on the practice green has led to lower scores.

“It’s all about the putting,” she said. “I look forward to getting the ball to the green and pulling out the putter.”

Herrington struggled up until midseason but really came in the final two to three weeks, Luis said. Work through the first Tee program, which is led at Lone Tree by Tournament Director and Assistant Golf Pro Monica Shahade, has helped Herrington progress in all facets of the game.

“She’s been a lot more consistent lately,” Luis said of Herrington.

The team’s fourth senior is Jordan Saldana, who never swung a club before she joined the program three years ago. She missed much of her junior year with illness, but has been a consistent contributor her senior year.

“She’s just one of those kids every one enjoys being around,” Luis said.

Other contributors for the Panthers have been juniors Nicollette Redfearn, Julia Gonsalves and Grisel Rendon, along with freshman Annie Rodrigues.

Luis, who resigned as Antioch’s softball coach two weeks ago to spend more time with his family and two children, hopes future Antioch teams improve as steadily and remain committed to the game as the current Panthers.

“My goal is that the girls continue to play golf and make it enjoyable for them not only today but until they are 40 and 50 and older,” Luis said. “I hope this lays the groundwork for a lot more golf in years to come. I’m proud of what they accomplished while they were here.”

WALKING FOR CHILDREN: There’s a lot of things we don’t do a lot of and one of them is walking in organized walks.

Each year, we play in more organized golf tournaments (2) than we walk in organized walks (1). and, we’re thinking about giving up the game of golf because, despite the fact that we shoot 36 holes of golf per year, we’re not getting any better at it. We’re getting worse.

But we still excel at walking, whether organized or in madcap disarray, and we will be walking like a champion for more than 5 kilometers (we throw the walking to and from our car into the total for the day) on Saturday in the 20th Anniversary Beach Walk for the Children’s Clinic.

The Children’s Clinic is dangerously close to being our favorite cause in Long Beach. it tackles the medical issues for children who are innocent victims of whatever has led to unfortunate situations in their lives due to homelessness, the loss of employment in their families, the loss of medical insurance … whatever the cause, TCC provides high-quality health care service to those children and families with the greatest needs.

The walking helps. Teams of friends, families, schools (including Millikan High, which makes a special effort to bring out a big crowd), community organizations and companies come out to take a stroll for TCC each year. Last year’s walk brought in close to $150,000.

On-site registration for this year’s “5K Fun Walk” – and we wish they didn’t call it “fun,” because it robs us of our cherished martyrdom in participating – starts at 8 a.m. Saturday, with the walk stepping off at 9 along the bike trail beginning at Marina Green, just south of Ocean Boulevard at Shoreline Drive.

And don’t run off after the walk. At 10 a.m. there’s a two-hour health fair and, at 11:40 a.m., the Long Beach Firefighters will fire up their barbecue for lunch.

HUFFINGTON, NOW!: we ran into law professor, TV host and local political savant Art Levine at the Successful Aging Expo last weekend (where we received a mountain of support for our triumphant return to the royal/editorial “we” pronoun over the mock-humble, utterly insufficient “I,” by the way), and he asked us to mention the upcoming Arianna Huffington speaking engagement at Cal State Long Beach.

We said, “sure!” because we agree to practically everything, and we figured, after a brief swing by the actuarial table, that we’d be in doggy heaven by the time Ms. Huffington’s speech was scheduled, which we thought was way off in the future.

So, just now, we’re going through our bag of Successful Aging swag, a pen, a pack of mints, a movie script, a business card from Susan Mais Requejo of the sprawling Mais family of Long Beach – you know one of them – and a pamphlet saying that Huffington is speaking tonight, so not much of a heads-up here.

Huffington, co-founder and editor-in-chief of the Huffington Post, syndicated columnist and author of more than a dozen (13) books will take her place in Cal State Long Beach’s Distinguished Speaker Series at 7:30 tonight in the Carpenter Performing Arts Center, on the northern rim of campus at 6200 Atherton Street.

She’ll be speaking on what she knows best: “Politics & the new Media,” how the Internet is shifting power to citizens and having a huge impact on politics.

Doors open for exhibits, books sales, music and light refreshments at 6 p.m. Huffington will deliver her address at 7:30 p.m., followed by a panel discussion at 8:30 and book signing at 9.

Tim Grobaty: We’ll walk a long way to help Children’s Clinic

MESQUITE, Nev. – It has been a bizarre year in golf, highlighted by a player with a broken leg winning the U.S. Open. Hard to believe, but it was the only major championship of the year captured by an American.

At the recent RE/MAX World Long Drive Championship here at Mesquite Regional Park, the year grew even stranger.

The new world champion, Jamie Sadlowski of St. Paul, Alberta, is a Popsicle-thin, 160-pound, 20-year-old ice-hockey player who spectacularly carried a drive 400 yards in the air. (The finals will be aired at 3 p.m. Dec. 24 on ESPN and at 2 p.m. Dec. 25 on ESPN2.) Compared with the gigantic men who frequent this competition (2007 winner Mike Dobbyn was 6 feet, 9 inches, 280 pounds), Sadlowski was considered a freak – too skinny to be taken seriously.

Now they know. Sadlowski, like some other hockey players, uses a variation of his slap shot to generate tremendous clubhead speed in his golf swing.

Finally, again from the World Long Drive Championship, it is odd but true that the new women’s world champion is a 55-year-old bartender who used to be a man.

Although golf is a sport largely without controversy, the reign of long-drive queen Lana Lawless, who lives in Palm Springs, Calif., is expected to be neither tranquil nor uneventful.

For starters, there is her startling honesty. “This is who I am. This is my life,” she said firmly. “That other person, that 245-pound SWAT cop I used to be, he’s gone. He’s not coming back.”

Lawless mostly was a curiosity until the night of Oct. 22, when she upset the competitor widely acclaimed as the longest hitter in women’s golf – 21-year-old Phillis Meti of Auckland, New Zealand.

“I beat her because of the wind,” conceded Lawless, whose longest drive into a 40-mph headwind traveled 254 yards – 4 yards longer than Meti’s best. “She hits it higher than I do, and that wind just knocked her ball out of the sky. If it had been downwind, she would have hit it 500 yards (Meti bombed a 349-yard drive in a qualifying round).”

The image of a policeman-turned-woman does not sit easily with many participants in a sport driven by power, muscle and speed.

“I am shocked more women are not complaining about this,” three-time world champion Sean “The Beast” Fister said. “It’s not an apples-to-apples deal. Men and women are different.”

Added former women’s world champion Lee Brandon: “In 2005, the USGA approved transgender involvement in competition, so I don’t see how we can dispute this. however, if a woman has the knees, hands and feet of a man, she has genetic real estate that is more gifted.”

Lawless had her supporters, including 2007 men’s champ Dobbyn, who observed, “When I watch her, I don’t see any advantage. she hits it like an LDA (Long Drivers of America) woman.”

The rules governing transgender golf competition are precise and numerous. for Lawless, they included mandatory doctor reports, lab results within normal female limits and onsite testing.

“I am a woman,” insisted Lawless, who adopted her new name from classic-movie star Lana Turner but declines to discuss her previous name.

“I’ve lost muscle mass. I don’t have big guns (biceps). They give you a drug that stops you from producing testosterone. your muscles atrophy. in about seven months, I went from 245 pounds to 175 pounds. I’ve gained back a little bit, but I feel like I don’t have any power.

“Sure, I used to be a man. for 18 years, I was a cop for the city of Rialto, one of the most violent cities in Southern California. I worked the gang unit. I had a very tough and mean exterior. People didn’t want to mess with me.

“I had a hard exterior, but I was compassionate inside. I always let the gay guys go; they had enough drama in their lives.”

According to Lawless, there were “cop friends who said, ‘Put 1,000 guys in a line, and you’d have been the last one picked (as a transgender candidate).’ I was a very convincing cop.”

As a man, Lawless had been married but fathered no children. “I was hiding in the straight world,” she said, “but Lana was always in there, and I wanted her to live. I had started to go to L.a. to the clubs, playing dress-up on the weekends, but I wanted to be a normal girl.”

Being a “normal girl’’ came with a price – despite medical insurance, she has spent $79,000 so far. another sacrifice was golf, which she figured would never again be part of her life.

For 21 years, the big, burly cop played golf at a private club, got down to a plus-1 handicap and even won the club championship. But, after gender-reassignment surgery in Trinidad, Colo., there was no golf in her life and no old friends, either. “Other than my family, I have no friends from my previous life,” she said.

After watching the 2006 ESPN broadcast of the RE/MAX World Long Drive Championship, she was drawn back into golf. she picked up a stock 45-inch Cobra driver and slammed a 295-yard drive in a regional competition.

Then the proverbial ball started rolling. she began working with instructor Les Taylor. she switched to a longer 48-inch driver with the help of Chris Fu, chief operating officer of Bang Golf, a component seller and long-drive specialty company in El Monte, Calif.

In 2007, her first year at the world championship, she lost in the semifinals to bodybuilder Sheila Kelliher, the eventual champion. Returning this year with the nickname “Heartbreaker” sewn into her headcovers, Lawless claimed the world title with a BangStorm driver that had 5.5 degrees of loft. her longest drive of the week was 335 yards.

Her parents remain her biggest cheerleaders. her mother introduces her as “my daughter.” But Lawless worries about “people who don’t want to open their minds. I’ve had mothers stop and point me out to their children. That’s cruel, but I’ve learned to deal with it.”

One thing is certain about the future: she will not hide.

“In Palm Springs,” she said, “I’m like celebrity central. Hey, I carry myself well, I’m well-spoken, I’m funny as hell. I fit in with a world that is expanding its acceptance.”

It remains to be seen whether the world of long driving will extend its wholehearted acceptance, but she owns a world championship, and nobody can wrestle that away.

After winning the 2008 crown, she smiled graciously but did not brag or boast. she seemed to talk more about Meti, the talented New Zealander who lost in the final, than she did of herself.

As a sensitive woman, Lawless knows what it’s like to lose. after falling 1 yard short in the 2007 semifinals and being eliminated, she had cried.

Cried herself a river, just like the girl she always wanted to be.

I don’t play golf for the exercise.

I mean, it’s a nice side benefit, sure.

I don’t play for the challenge.

Sure, I love a good challenge, especially with myself (as golfprovides). but no challenge is ever undertaken simply because it isdifficult…

I don’t play golf simply for the social aspect…

I play golf for the “moments”.

Yes, some of the best “moments” of my life have been on a golf course.

… others have been with my wife. (none of your business)

… others have been on a mountain stream.

I have a perfect memory of golfing with my Dad (Papa Gig in theforums), my brother, and my best friend. As follows…

It is fall, nearing sunset.

We all hit a nice approach shot into the 15th green – 4 balls on theshort stuff. So, even before approaching the green we all have a jollymood, like “jeez, this game is EASY!”

The green is guarded by big, old, cottonwood trees, with a streamflowing behind them.

The trees are shedding their cotton enmasse, it is thick in the air,almost as if you have to wade through it to get to the green.

But for some reason, the cotton is not falling on the ground. Thegreen is perfect.

It is just hanging in mid-air. Not moving – frozen in time. the sun isalmost down, so everything is orange, and it looks like everybody ismoving in slow motion.

Here I was, surrounded by a lush, perfectly manicured golf course,with some of the people I love most, in a picture perfect setting -putting for bird.

And I realized it couldn’t last forever…

So I took a mental snapshot. I locked the feeling in my soul.

It will be one of my most treasured memories forever.

(And then, I’m sure, I screwed up my birdie putt. but I don’t rememberthat part…)

And that’s why we play golf…

We play golf because there are only so many perfect moments in thislife – and for some reason, being on the golf course provides many ofthem.

With friends. with family. with perfect strangers would could soon befriends.

With business partners. with children.

Golf is a sport to love. to treasure. to cherish.

Don’t let the significance of this sport we love so much pass you by.

After all, you only have so many rounds left until you pass out ofbounds forever…
