Tisha Alyn Abrea can picture the end of her junior season as ifit was yesterday.

The tension in her playoff group. the little dog leg to theright on that second playoff hole. the easy approach she leftherself. then there’s the water protecting the green, the club sheshould have reached for, and finally, the gasps from thegallery.

“An easy, 70-yard shot —- something I was doing so well theentire day,” Abrea said. “But I didn’t consider the wind and Ididn’t consider the fact that when you’re under pressure, you loseyardage. I chose the wrong club, hit the hill and the ball rolledall the way down into the water. it really hurt to look at thecrowd and hear them all gasp for me.

“But I grew from it.”

Indeed, a deflating finish at Talega Golf Course in San Clementelast November put an abrupt end to a banner junior season thatinspired the 17-year-old Abrea to renew her passion for the game.Armed with a new swing coach and new determination, Abrea vaultedup the American Junior Golf Association rankings over the summerand has come out firing on all cylinders for a Vista Murrieta girlsgolf team flirting with the prospect of clinching its firstoutright league title in program history.

With Abrea sporting the Valley’s best nine-hole average (37.7)and junior Riley Leming and sophomore Carolane Gariepy rounding outthe Southwestern League’s most accomplished trio of returners, theBroncos have rolled to a 16-0 start to the season. on the way,they’ve topped defending champion great Oak and secured at least ashare of the title heading into Tuesday’s league finale against theWolfpack.

At the core of that run toward a program milestone is Abreapushing her teammates to new heights and then, in turn, pushingtheir senior teammate each time she steps on a golf course.

“It’s huge,” said Broncos coach Ryan Heise, whose team will headto Temecula Creek Inn for its finale against great Oak. “Coming outher first year, Tisha was pretty much the one and only player (ofher caliber at Vista Murrieta) and having those two around hasboosted her and helped her excel and really take on that leadershiprole —- ‘OK, ladies, this is how we’ve got to get it done.’ Inreturn it’s really helped her game.

The defending Southwestern League champion, Abrea’s nine-holeaverage (37.7) this season is shades ahead of great Oak’s topreturner, Andrea Slane (38.0) —- the result of a summer spentrefurbishing her game after failing to advance out of last year’sCIF Southern Section finals alongside Temecula Valley graduateVeronica Valerio and Slane.

“That was really tough on me,” said Abrea, who made the cut forthe state-qualifier as a sophomore and has been one of the league’stop golfers since her freshman year. “I’ll admit that I did cryover it. … it was really difficult to even shake the other girls’hands knowing I wanted it so bad. That’ s why I have one morechance this year.”

Abrea is making the most of that opportunity, too.

After a brief reprieve from the game, she settled on a newprivate coach, revamped her swing from the ground up and tackledthe AJGA tour as aggressively as ever with a philosophy that paiddividends the moment she bought into pro Cary Schoen’steachings.

Based heavily on the book, “The Golfing Machine,” Schoen —-who also instructs the Wolfpack’s Slane —- gave Abrea analternative way to deconstruct her swing.

“It’s not exactly math and physics, but he tells you that youhave the problems you have for a reason,” Abrea said. “There is areason for everything. Golf’s definitely about feel, but you can’tget the right feel if you don’t have the right mechanics.

“With what he’s taught me, I’ve grown so much. If I would haveshown you my swing from even four months ago, it doesn’t’ even looklike me.”

The same could be said about her scores, too.

Within four months, Abrea replaced her high-70s average for 18holes with rounds in the 60s. at the same time, she made the cut inall four of the AGJA events she played in, recorded a top-10 finishand a top-five finish in an event she led after Day 1 and vaultedfrom 332 to 146 in that association’s rankings.

Back at Vista Murrieta, consistent pressure from Leming andGariepy have only helped Abrea maintain a daily competitive edgewhile forming a bond that’s served the team well. Both were in thegallery when Abrea chunked her approach shot in the playoff lastNovember and shared in her loss.

“It was sad; we were all emotional,” Gariepy said. “We know howmuch we work and how we put our sweat and everything into thisgame. when we knew she wasn’t going to get it because of that watershot, it was definitely devastating to see a teammate and a friendlose. But we know now we’re ready for it and we’re not going to putourselves in that situation.

“We’re going to work to get it this year because we’re moredetermined.”

That determination has popped up throughout the Broncos’ matchesthis season, with Gariepy (39.6) and Leming (40-.8) —- whosenine-hole averages rank fourth and sixth, respectively, in TheValley —- regularly contending and occasionally overtaking Abreafor medalist honors.

“I think it’s actually really healthy,” Leming said. “I try tocompete against Tisha every single day and I think it’s good tohave on the team.”

An outright team league title within backs up that notion. Sodoes the pressure Abrea feels from her teammates as she preps forthe final postseason of her high school career.

“As soon as they came in —- and I knew they were coming andwas excited —- they were keeping me on my toes,” said Abrea,who’s weighing college options at UC Davis and Cal State Fullerton.”I’m proud of them every time they beat me. they keep mecompetitive. If it wasn’t for them, I probably wouldn’t be asmotivated as I am to stay on top.

“They can pull some really good rounds out there, don’t get mewrong. But I’m going to try to hold my title. it keeps megoing.”

Once he was on the tee on a par 3 and hit a shot reached down picked up his tee and a playing partner said "good shot Moe, that will be an easy birdie" Moe replied, I'm not putting today" and the ball went in the hole for a hole in one.

God's Gospel that happened, he was asked about it anytime he gave an interview which was rare.

Moe Norman was by far the best ball-striker that golf is aware of. the people that describe his swing call it a single plane swing. What he does is aligns his right forearm in line with the shaft from the down the line view. His arms are stretched out far enough that he swings his arms, hands and shoulders all on the shaft plane line, since he aligned his arms with it.

It's so different from traditional methods it's probably not even worth learning unless your a beginner and haven't developed much of a swing yet.

give me a break. there's no way that this could be answered in a few sentences. there are a lot of good instructional books that will give you a detailed explanation. the best are:(1) "5 Lessons – The Modern Fundamentals of Golf" by Ben Hogan and (2) "Golf my Way" by Jack Nicklaus. start by reading these books cover to cover and get some lessons.

Oct. 17–NORMAL — Mitchell Homb cemented his status as one of the Sauk Valley’s all-time greatest prep athletes Saturday, when he won the Class 2A boys golf state tournament.

It’s a shame more people haven’t seen him perform.

Homb burst onto the local scene as a freshman on Dixon’s golf team, and in the past four years, his accomplishments have built and built.

Word spread, through copies of the newspaper and word of mouth. still, most who are reading these words have never seen Homb swing a club.

That’s too bad, but it’s just part of being a high-school golfer.

the sport doesn’t lend itself well to spectators or casual fans. if someone wants to see the latest basketball phenom, football stud or track star, a trip to the arena or stadium is a small price to pay for most folks.

four hours on the golf course? Walking? not likely for all but the most loyal friends and family members.

That’s OK. Understandable. But for those who haven’t seen Homb’s brilliance up close, let me try to explain it.

It’s not the freakish athleticism of Joseph Bertrand throwing down a jaw-dropping slam dunk. It’s not the mix of power and precision that produces a 95-mph Seth Blair fastball. It’s not Sammy Biggs flying across the frontstretch, Nicole Williams gliding over a high-jump bar, Garrett Barnas making like a character from Super Tecmo Bowl, or Jamie Russell leading a fast break as an entire gym loses its breath.

Homb’s brilliance is in his creativity, his resourcefulness. Those who follow Mitchell expect him to find trouble on the golf course. Those are the exciting holes, the ones when we get to see something special.

taking a ball buried under twigs and pine needles, well off-course, and making a par out of it. Hitting a ball from a sand trap deeper than he is tall, and landing it 3 feet from the cup. Zig-zagging across the course and still ending up with a lower score than the straight-arrow shooters.

the state tournament is his showcase, when the lucky ones following players in his foursome get to see the mastermind at work. Every year, every three holes or so, someone from Springfield or the suburbs or the Ohio River Valley lets out a gasp.

“How’d he do that?”

That’s what all the greats make us say.

Mike Schramm won a three-hole playoff against Tim Kelly to capture the 23rd annual Treasure Coast Amateur Championship on Sunday at Sandridge Golf Club in Vero Beach.

Schramm of Port St. Lucie shot rounds of 74-71 to finish at 1-over par. He outlasted Kelly by parring the 18th hole on the Dunes Course during the playoff.

Kelly shot the tournament low round of 68 on Sunday to force the playoff. He earned the Indian River County championship for being the low county resident in the tournament. It is the third time that Kelly has won the county title.

FLORIDA STATE SENIOR OPEN: Gene Fieger wasn’t going to let what happened last Sunday happen again.

The Hideout Golf Club head professional was tied for the lead with six holes to play at the Senior PGA National Professional Championship before faltering down the stretch and tying for 15th.

Sunday in the Florida State Senior Open, the 50-year-old lost a two-shot lead and was tied with Ken Martin with five holes to play.

But Martin stumbled to a double-bogey on the par-5 14th, and Fieger birdied for a three-shot swing, and Fieger went on to win the 34th annual event by five shots at the Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club.

Ed Sabo of Tequesta passed Martin, from Wellington, for second place by a shot at 6-under-par 210. Arrowhead’s Mike Dopslaff tied for fourth at 2-under 214 with three-time champion Mike San Filippo of Hobe Sound.

Fieger, Martin and Sabo had all finished high enough at the Senior PGA National Pro to earn spots in next year’s Senior PGA Championship, so they were playing well coming in.

No. 14 was the second hole with a multiple-shot swing that benefited Fieger. He birdied the par-5 eighth, and Martin bogeyed after hitting a poor tee shot into the trees and having to pitch out. that gave Fieger a two-stroke lead that he held going to the back nine.

Fieger still had a two-shot lead going to the par-3 12th, but Martin drained a 20-footer for birdie, then Fieger missed the green on the par-4 13th and bogeyed to fall into a tie.

“I figured I’m tied, I made a couple of mistakes, and if I can just birdie the par-5s, you’re going to do OK,” Fieger said.

“I was kind of right back in there,” Martin said. “I thought this is great, a par-5, super.”

Instead, No. 14 was Martin’s undoing. his tee shot went left into the trees, and the ball was near a root. his second shot hit the tree root and caromed back into the 14th fairway. Martin hit his third shot up near the green, and with ABBA’s “S.O.S.” appropriately playing on a neighbor’s stereo, his fourth shot just caught the top of the greenside bunker. He hit a good bunker shot, then missed a 5-footer for par.

“I hit another bad tee shot right behind a tree,” Martin said, recounting the hole. “I thought I could hit it over the root, and obviously misjudged that and lucky I didn’t hurt myself. I just tried to slice the next one; it went dead straight. Tried to miss the bunker, went right in it. Hit a pretty decent bunker shot, thought the putt would break, and it didn’t. a bunch of zeros.”

Meanwhile, Fieger hit a strong tee shot, and put his second shot in the fringe, pitched to six feet and made the birdie putt.

Fieger, who had won the 2002 and 2003 South Florida PGA Opens at the Beach Club, followed the same routine on No. 15, and birdied again, then hit an 8-iron to 12 feet and made the putt on the par-3 16th to seal the win.

“The Beach Club has always been good to me,” Fieger said. “I’ve played well here. There’s a lot of birdie holes out there. the greens, you can make some putts if you get the ball started on line. It’s a fun place to play.”

Schramm wins Treasure Coast Amateur Golf Championship

Oct. 19–MARTINSVILLE — Kevin Harvick might want to blast a golf ball or two right about now.

After all, he’s found that “other” sport to be quite therapeutic, and there’s no doubt the pressure is on him. As NASCAR’s Sprint Cup Series heads to Martinsville Speedway this weekend, Harvick is one of three men who can still call himself a title contender and not have people spit beer in his face with laughter.

The stress-inducer: Those other two guys — Jimmie Johnson and Denny Hamlin — are aces at this place.

Hmm … where are those golf clubs again?

Golf is “a lot of fun for me because it’s the exact opposite of what I do on the weekend,” Harvick said at a recent media appearance at Chatmoss Country Club, where rain prevented him from showing off his fledgling swing. “It’s one of those things, you go to the golf course and it’s quiet. It’s you against yourself. you don’t have to worry about tire pressure, springs, shocks. It’s you and the clubs.”

Harvick — who sits in third place in the Cup standings, 77 points behind leader Johnson and 36 behind Hamlin — doesn’t claim to be the second coming of Jack Nicklaus, or even the second coming of Dorf. He’s only taken up golf within the past year.

Still, he loves it.

This time of the season doesn’t afford him many opportunities to fire at the flags, but he works in a round whenever he can.

“At Michigan, I was [ticked] off after the Nationwide race and I said, ‘Screw it,’ ” Harvick said. “I threw the golf clubs into the car and we went to the golf course down the street and played golf.”

a good release, in other words. asked by a reporter what he did with his frustration before he discovered this activity, he came up with a quick answer.

“Released it on you,” Harvick said.

so the old game gets a thank you note from motorsports writers everywhere. But it’s not like Harvick actually bothered with many lessons.

“I did for a while, but I got bored, so we just started playing,” he said. “That was probably the worst thing that I did — just go out and start playing. now I’ve developed a couple bad habits that I’ve got to break. I’ve got all winter to fix that, right?”

maybe. But if he wins the title, there are all those extracurricular activities he’ll have to attend to.

and make no mistake: Harvick can win this thing. He’s having perhaps his best season as a driver. He’s got three wins, 13 top-five efforts and an average finish of 9.4.

If points were still awarded under the pre-Chase format, he’d have a whopping 249-point edge on the field.

“We had a good first 26 weeks,” Harvick said. “Going into the last 10 weeks, you know what’s going to happen, you know everybody’s going to be pretty close and it’s going to be 10 weeks of stress and worrying about how you’re going to run this week, how you ran last week, how you’re going to gain points, who you need to gain points on.

“For us, we kind of went into a mode where it didn’t matter. We didn’t chase points for the 10 weeks [before the Chase]. We just raced.”

he can’t do that now. Knowing where Johnson and Hamlin are on the track Sunday will be a must. Those two have combined to win the past eight races at the 0.526-mile oval, so even if Harvick doesn’t beat them, he has to try to leave Henry County alive.

Harvick has never won here, but he does feel at home. he resides about a 40-minute drive from the track, in North Carolina. The proximity allows him to sleep in his own bed and eat at home whenever the circuit visits.

he also hosts an annual go-kart race on his property with friends on the Thursday before every fall Cup race at Martinsville.

“I don’t really know how big it is,” he said of the go-kart track. “I spray-painted it on the ground and said, ‘Pave it here.’ they run about six-second laps, so it’s a lot like Martinsville. It’s pretty tight quarters and a lot of running into each other, just something that we have fun with.”

If the fun ends Sunday, be warned: you might hear “fore!” at a course near you.

IT BEGAN with an Italian copping the wrath of an American in Wales – but it could end in a nightmare for Australia's top golfers.

Tiger Woods has come through his worst season as a professional golfer and the defence of his JB were Australian Masters title at Victoria Golf Club is the light at the end of his tunnel.

His manager Mark Steinberg said Woods was delighted to have buried his swing demons in a scintillating finish to last week’s Ryder Cup.

And in an ominous message for next month’s Masters field, Steinberg said Woods’ increased confidence meant he would actually prefer to play more tournaments than the three remaining on his 2010 schedule.

On the final day of the Ryder Cup at Celtic Manor in Wales, Woods was nine under through 15 holes as he wiped Francesco Molinari four-and-three in their matchplay singles clash.

The American was a spectacular seven under for his closing seven holes – a sign, Steinberg said, that his much-discussed swing changes were taking effect.

"On the Monday of the Ryder Cup, a lot of that clicked and he played a brilliant 15 holes and he’s hoping that’s going to continue to carry over for the balance of this year," Steinberg said from Cleveland yesterday.

"It was bittersweet for him (because Europe regained the cup) … but I could hear that each day he was starting to understand and comprehend what he was working on with his new teacher (Sean Foley).

"I’ve heard Sean say Tiger is picking up the concepts quicker than even he would have anticipated, so they’re on a very good track right now."

Woods, who won last year’s Masters at Kingston Heath, will lose the No. 1 ranking he has held for 279 weeks by the end of October when Lee Westwood will overtake him.

Should he win the HSBC Masters in Shanghai the week before returning to Melbourne, Woods could return to the top spot he has held for a total of 620 weeks in three stints since he first hit the top in 1998.

But Steinberg said being world No. 1 was not Woods’ motivation.

"Does he think about it? Sure. Does it play on his mind, daily? No, I don’t think so," Steinberg said.

"It comes down to good play. Tiger has always said that good golf takes care of all that.

"He has three more tournaments (December’s Chevron World Challenge is his last for the year) and there are significant world ranking points available, so if he plays to his best, that will take care of itself.

"I’ve heard him often say about his goals that if he’s a better player, a more complete player, on December 31 than he was on January 1 of that year, it was a successful year.

"Obviously it’s been a different type of year, but with the new swing and coach he’s heading in the right direction."

ALTAMONT — Louie Walsh couldn’t believe his own card Tuesday — a 4-under par 67.John Young was tremendously disappointed with his round — a 7-over — and just wanted another shot at the New York State Tournament.He made the cut by one stroke in the Section II Golf Playoff at the Orchard Creek Golf Club.Walsh, Young and 14 other of Section II’s best — including Saratoga Springs High School freshman Calvin Beckwith — will come back to the course at 10 a.m. Thursday, each seeking a berth in the New York State Public High Schools Athletic Association Tournament next June at Cornell University.“Yeah, my best ever,” Walsh said. “My first time under par in a tournament. I had a couple even pars but 1-over in tournaments was my best.”The slightly built Shenendehowa senior shot a 3-under 33 on the front nine and toured the par-35 back-nine 1-under.“four birdies,” Walsh said. “I’m excited. I birdied No. 3, the par-3 sixth, then 18 and 1 (He had started at No. 2). I made almost every birdie putt I looked at.”Mechanicville’s Young had been the medalist of the Class C-D championship with a 1-over par 73 at Schenectady Municipal last week.“I just didn’t have my swing today,” Young said. “it was nothing like the other day (at Schenectady Municipal).Beckwith, too, made the 16-player cut, shooting a 78.Shen junior Alex Kincaid was second with a 1-over 72 and a trio of players shot 73 – Shen’s Ryan Simpson, Ballston Spa’s Zack Scala and Jimmy Sullivan of Averill Park.Chris Giglio of Niskayuna and Queensbury’s Riley Olson shared sixth place with 74s.Walsh said he built his score by hitting fairways and with solid approach shots.“I just hit it close,” he said. “all my birdie putts were inside 20 feet. I hit the line and was confident in my stroke. I felt like I was a zone.”Walsh said most of his par saves came from within five yards of the green but said his “up-and-down of the day” came at the par-4 fourth hole.“I missed long and left,” he said. “then I hit it to 15 feet and made par.Walsh laid up on the 493-yard, par-5 18th and hit his third shot to within seven feet. He then had a two-putt birdie from 18 feet on 1.“I hit a lot of fairways,” Walsh said. “And no bogeys – surprisingly.”Young struggled with shot-making and on the greens.“No birdies,” Young said. “first time all year. I made some par putts but every time I had a birdies putt, I didn’t convert them. Walsh’s 67 leads first round of Section II golf tournament

Learning to swing a golf club is not easy. It helps if you learn from one of the best. Some students from Sacred Heart School in Omaha had that rare opportunity Monday.

Tony Pesavento spent some time with the children from the sixth, seventh, and eighth grade Monday. He taught them what it takes to drive a golf ball. Pesavento is the course pro at Omaha Country Club.

Even though most of the children had never played golf before, they seemed to pick up the game pretty quickly. The golf lessons were held in conjunction with Sacred Heart’s first golf tournament to raise money for the school.
