Sometimes if I get outta whack, I'll do nothing but practice chipping and pitching… Focusing ONLY on contact…. Meaning, make sure your making solid contact and hitting the ball first. get the feel of that back then slowly try to incorporate that feeling into your iron play. the only thing that really matters is what your doing through the hitting zone.. Chipping and pitching can be a quick fix… good luck…

You never know where Coach Sweeney’s Samsung is headed, or where it will stop, or for how long. Even though his wife reminded him from the kitchen that the Fresno State game had started on channel 698, he wasn’t ditching the Broncos just yet.

“I hate to leave ‘em when they’re on the goal line,” he said.

Perhaps no one in Fresno, or on the planet, had more interest in the Bulldogs beating Ole miss, of finally breaking through against the Southeastern Conference, of salvaging a little pride against the South. It was 14 seasons ago that Sweeney took his last Fresno State team across the country to play Auburn and lost 62-0.

“I made a lot of mistakes,” Sweeney said, “but the biggest I ever made was going to play Auburn. their quarterback — we never did touch him. he ran all over hell.”

Sweeney coached Fresno State football for 19 seasons in the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s, and took the first, if not ill-advised, swing at the SEC in 1996. the Bulldogs took their fourth shot on Saturday, lost to Ole miss 55-38, and are now 0-4 against the famous conference.

And still he was going to watch a Boise State drive to the end before flipping over. Sweeney flips so much that three weeks ago he missed his grandson Beau’s first college touchdown for Cal.

“I have an increasingly difficult time leaving the situation when I’m chang- ing channels,” he said.

The old coach is 81 years old now and watches football full blast, both hearing aids cranked, the TV blaring, the controller firing. June wears a big pair of headphones tuned to a different TV in the dining room, pacing the kitchen like an air traffic controller.

“I gotta wear these because he keeps that thing so loud,” she said. “I keep it on Fresno State. I can’t stand all that flippin’ back and forth.”

It was “two good women” who’ve gotten him to this age, he likes to say. his first wife died of an aneurism, and he’s been married to June for 21 years. Sweeney never expected to live to 80, but the real question is what would have stopped him? a couple years ago, June noticed he wasn’t using his right hand much, and when they got to the doctor, he said Sweeney had suffered a stroke he hadn’t bothered to mention.

His mind and memory are great, but his right arm is in a permanent flex with a fist. Age has bent him some at the waist, so he has the look of a big man who is about to charge and stomp up your button-down dress shirt.

He’s had a six-way bypass on his heart — they decided to leave a seventh artery half blocked — and two angioplasties. he and June have had four condos in Hawaii, but Fresno is their paradise now. Sweeney only attends two events in person anymore, breakfast at a Mexican restaurant (he bet the owner’s daughter $5 that the Bulldogs would win Saturday) and Fresno State football games. He’s had the same seats since the 1970s.

The rest of the sports world he watches from the brown chair in their living room. Once in a while, he sings the school fight song after a touchdown, and behind him in the kitchen June pumps her fist like Kirk Gibson rounding the bases.

The only thing that moves him is June’s halftime stew, which would make any man jump. Then it’s back to the remote. Jim Sweeney doesn’t let either get cold.
