If anyone was still unaware that the PGA Championship was getting underway in Wisconsin Thursday (belatedly, after a fog delay), two golfers, a swing coach and a meddling sportscaster did their best to remind you.

First, of course, was Tiger Woods. this weekend was supposed to serve as his make-or-break opportunity to show the world he could overcome his nightmarish finish in Akron last weekend, where he played the worst golf of his career. so he promptly hit some balls while his caddy, Steve Williams, awkwardly rested a golf club against his head. Woods then played a practice round while freelance swing coach Sean Foley videotaped him.

“It’s good news for Woods to admit that his self-analysis hasn’t been working, and that he’s seeking some help from a coach as talented and knowledgeable as Foley,” Mike Walker of Golf Magazine writes. “Raises expectations for Whistling Straits a little, although they couldn’t have been lower.”

Tuesday night, Jim Gray reported on the Golf Channel that Corey Pavin, the U.S. Ryder Cup captain, told him Woods would get a spot on the team as one of four captain’s picks. Pavin responded the next morning during a practice round via Twitter that he never said such a thing. At a press conference after his round, he again said that the statement was untrue. Gray then confronted Pavin in the media center, got in his face, pointed a finger at Pavin, and told him, “You’re going down.” the Golf Channel issued a statement saying they stand behind Gray’s account.

It’s hard to figure out what the real story is here. Gray, on one hand, couldn’t have a more tattered journalistic reputation at the moment, after serving as the hand-selected questioner of LeBron James in his ill-advised “the Decision” special. Last time we saw Gray, his biggest scoop was revealing that LeBron bites his nails, as millions of people screamed at their television screens for him to just ask where he’s playing. before that, Gray was remembered mostly for badgering Pete Rose at MLB’s All Century ceremony before Game 2 of the World Series in 1999.

On the other hand, Pavin may have either flippantly made a comment thinking he was off the record, or Gray might have misheard what Pavin had said. Pavin stressed at the press conference that the blame lies with Gray. “Obviously there was a misinterpretation of what I said,” Pavin told the media. “And that is an incorrect quote.”
