I am in my mid 30s and want to take up golf. Never swung a club. BESIDES hiring a coach, which I don't want to do, how should I begin? I don't own any equipment, but am not ready to spend a bundle just yet. How would you advise I wade into it?

Get thee to the driving range and use one of their clubs. You'll have to know that the name of the game is HIT THE BALL AT A TARGET not HIT AT THE BALL. To do this you'll have to teach yourself to swing the club back and forth at the target you have chosen and not up and down at the ball. Success at golf comes slowly at first and patience is required to get you through the learning process. Frustration is the enemy of learning so keep a sense of humour when you miss the ball or roll it along the ground. when you feel comfortable with your ball striking find a friend to head to the course with. Watch golf on TV to get a sense of how the best players in the world swing and play the game. You'll also get lots of tips on the Golf Channel. Try to learn as much as you can about the game and you'll soon become addicted just like the rest of us.

You really don't have a choice, take lessons from a qualified instructor. Don't buy clubs until you have done so. Golf is a sport that requires a great deal of skill and any money you spend on lessons is well worth it.

Good question! Golf is best learned backwards. First try putting for an hour or two for different lengths. 3 footers up to 20 up to 50 footers, etc. Then try chipping. etc. Them mid irons etc. Then lastly woods, etc, Good luck.

Santa Ynez girls tennis coach Jennifer Rasmussen had wanted more production from her doubles teams.

Her tandems combined for six points Thursday. That productivity helped the Pirates beat short-handed Righetti 11-7 in a non-league match at Santa Ynez.

Doubles pairs Bianca Capasso and Kylie Petersen, and Kat Rocha and Breanna Bregy both won two of their three sets. Heather Vellekamp and Mylee Curtis, and Melinda Wilson and Jena Deming won a set each. the former pair split two sets. the latter went 1-0.Singles ace Emily Ineman helped the Pirates improve to 4-5 on a summer-like early autumn day by sweeping her sets 6-2, 6-0, 6-0.“We were looking for more from our doubles and I think we got that today,” said Rasmussen.“Emily has been strong, but our doubles teams haven’t been as strong as Santa Ynez doubles teams of the past.”Capasso and Petersen, a pair of juniors, showed their usual strengths as they had a good day. “I’m stronger on the forehand, Bianca’s stronger on the backhand,” said Petersen.They started playing with each other last year and, “each of us knows what the other one’s going to do on the court,” said Capasso.the Warriors (3-3) were without Aya Kasai, who’s played at no. 2 singles for them this year. WILLIAMSTOWN — in a match of two North County teams at Waubeeka Golf Links, Hoosac Valley (11-4) knocked Mount Greylock (6-8) out of playoff contention with a 162-177 victory on the Mounties’ home course Tuesday.

Chad Alibozek, Corbin Brassard and Ian Fletcher combined for four birdies, all on par-5s, to lead the Hurricanes’ attack in their final regular season match. Matt Freitag carded a 45 to complete the scoring.

“This was a good warm-up going into Western Mass.,” coach Jay Sniezek said.

The Mounties entered Tuesday’s match needing to win it and today’s match versus Taconic at Berkshire Hills Country Club to get into the postseason. But, with Collin Delano’s 43 serving as their lowest score, the numbers weren’t low enough. Delano recorded the team’s only birdie on the par-4 2nd.

Robert Glick (44), Hayden Barber (45) and Sierra Holland (45) completed the scoring for Greylock. Holland was making a return to the varsity lineup after making some adjustments in her swing, most notably, moving farther from the ball to allow for more extension in her swing.

Coach Bruce Goff wasn’t upset about his team’s score.

“I can’t complain about the score. That’s a pretty solid number for us,” he said. “We had a couple close matches [five- and two-stroke losses], a couple shots here and there and we would’ve been in.”

Greylock volleyball

WILLIAMSTOWN — After a long day of volleyball at the Spalding Showcase of Champions Tournament on Monday, the Mounties could have called have thrown in the towel against Berlin (N.Y.). After all, it wasn’t a county game.

But, they didn’t and made quick work of Berlin, winning in straight sets 25-10, 25-13, 25-12.

“It was a really long day [Monday] and the kids came out and played well,” coach Phil Paul said.

Greylock (12-1) crushed Berlin despite playing without its typical starters, who lasted just five points in the first set. Paul said he wanted to give them a rest because they played seven games on Monday.

Alexis Bushika led with nine of the team’s 26 aces. Sam Rydell and Elise Masson were right behind with six apiece. Masson also had seven digs for the Mounties. Geena Chang had a strong day with five kills. Kelsey Goodwin was solid with four aces, a pair of kills and six blocks.

“I think playing all weekend really helped us out,” Paul said. “They did a great job. a lot of them we don’t hesitate to use at any time.”

It may appear as just another win on their schedule, but it keeps the Mounties one game back of Wahconah in the standings, which makes today’s matchup at Wahconah the biggest game of the season. Varsity is slated to start 20 minutes after the JV match, which starts at 4:30 p.m.

Greylock girls’ soccer

GREAT BARRINGTON — After 79 evenly-played minutes, Monument Mountain’s Sophie Randolph took a pass from Keegan Baldwin and put it past Mounties keeper Margot Besnard to give Monument a 2-1 win.

Greylock (5-3-2) got a goal from Annie Flynn with 19 minutes left in the game to tie it at one. Sophie Leamon was credited with the assist.

“Both teams had opportunities,” Greylock coach Tom Ostheimer said. “Margot made some nice saves for us to keep us in it.”

The Mounties are at Hoosac Valley at 4 p.m. on Friday.

McCann girls’ soccer

NORTH ADAMS — Mary Nguyen scored twice and Beckie Daniels picked up eight saves and an assist, but Caitlyn Hobhan’s goal at the 60th minute forced the 2-2 tie with St. Mary’s on Tuesday.

“There was action down in our end. It came down inside the box and [Hobhan] lobbed it over Beckie’s head,” McCann coach Mike Dowling said.

Alex Lincoln assisted on Nguyen’s second goal, which gave the Hornets (5-6-1, 5-3-1 Tri-County) a 2-1 lead 45 minutes in.

Drury girls’ soccer

DALTON — the Blue Devils couldn’t stop Wahconah from qualifying for the Western Massachusetts Division II tournament in a 4-0 loss Tuesday.

The Warriors’ Meghan Morine netted two goals for Wahconah, who outshot Drury 20-5.

Drury keeper Ali Tatro was kept busy all game and had 16 saves to show for it.

“Ali had a tremendous game, coming out of the net many times to make diving saves,” Drury coach Molly Meczywor said. “She’s really shown improvement over the past few weeks.”

The Blue Devils host Lee on Thursday at 4 p.m.

McCann boys’ soccer

SPRINGFIELD — the Hornets were lulled to sleep by the long bus ride to Commerce on Tuesday, and it cost them dearly. Commerce jumped out to a 4-0 lead at the half and held on for a 6-3 win.

The Hornets battled back in the second half with goals from Ben Pecor and Nate Gutmann to cut the lead in half. Commerce responded with another, but a.J. Valliers’ tally closed the deficit to two again.

It was the chances that went by the wayside that really cost them. With McCann trailing 5-3, Gutmann had two penalty kicks in the final 15 minutes, but one sailed high and the other missed left. Pecor had a shot go off the post in the last five minutes with McCann still down by two. Commerce’s final goal was an own goal by McCann.

The Hornets arrived just 10 minutes before game time.

“We weren’t ready to play,” coach Adam Kozik said. “That might be happening to a lot of teams, not having enough time to warm-up.”

Commerce had to endure the same situation when it traveled to North Adams earlier in the season. the Hornets were able to jump out to a 3-0 lead in that game.

Connor Vazquez made nine saves in goal for McCann.

Williams women’s soccer

HARTFORD, Conn. — Brett Eisenhart scored early in overtime as the Ephs (7-3-1, 3-2-1 NESCAC) got the best of Trinity 2-1 on Tuesday.

After a scoreless first half, midfielder Sara Wild netted a 40-footer — her third goal on the season — to give Williams a 1-0 advantage.

In the 79th minute, Trinity’s Caroline Wachburne’s shot was deflected by Ephs keeper Julia Schreiber. Jenny Lee took the rebound and tied the game, sending it to overtime.

Eisenhart’s game-winner was her eighth of the year, and was assisted by Nicole Stenquist, who received an entry pass from Kara Duggan. Williams outshot Trinity 17-9.

The Ephs return to action on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. when they host Bowdoin in a NESCAC contest on Cole Field.

i have had a coach just last month.
then, i stopped playing for quite some time..
and eventually forgot how to make a ball fly.

i'm thinking of hiring a golf coach now,
to make my balls fly again.

at the range near by,
there are 2 golf coaches.
but the problem is,
i don't know who should i pick.

the 1st coach is a swing perfectionist.
he won't be happy unless you get what he says.
he also is a current nation wide tour participant,
and had played in asian tours as a pro.
(so i understand why he's like that).

the other one is.. well, a nice coach.
he teaches kids, but doesn't go on tours.
actually, he was the one who taught me
how to make a golf ball fly. he's good.
when i swing using what he taught me, i feel great.

BUT when the perfectionist coach saw my swing,
he said it was bad, and needs to be corrected
(though i can hit the ball straight).
now, i wonder if the nice coach's swing teachings are wrong.

WHO SHOULD I PICK?

Go for the coach that has been on the tour. he knows what it takes to get to that next level. the other guy is for everyday golf hackers like me, not those that aspire for more like you.

You have already learned something from your previous coach, I would go for the pro and learn something different, you may enjoy your new swing as much as your old one and may even hit the ball better.
Im the kind of person that always likes to learn new things and different ways of doing things though, so that is why I would go with the new guy.

Have you ever seen pro golf on tv? a lot of those pros have really funky swings and I have no clue how they can even hit the ball.

Go with the guy that works works with the kids, everyone's swing is perfect, perfectionists just want you to do it their way.

Do whatever it takes to have a consistent swing that feels good. if it works for you, it doesn't matter what it looks like.

Karin you have had a good experience with the nice coach and feel a bit intimidated by the perfectionist. I would suggest that you go to the nice coach and let him take you as far as he can and only then change coaches to get to the next level. When the new coach takes you as far as he can then it will be time to change again. But do start with the coach that teaches beginners and allow yourself to grow. good luck with becoming as good as you can be.

You are a rambler, using an inordinate amount of words to describe a simple question. if you doubt the instructor, you have just destroyed anything which was taught. the best instructor is the " TINKERER ". he /She is the instructor who looks at your swing, sees what may be causing a problem and suggests a "fix ". he follows through the entire swing making adjustments where they are needed; on the grip, the stance, ball position, back swing or take-away,position at the top which is natural for you, through the point of impact to the finish or follow through. this is all done with your swing, not what he feels is perfect, but what fits your stature, build and flexibility.

If you want to be really good, then go with the perfectionist and be prepared to change. there are a lot of ways to swing and make decent contact, but if you want to surpass "decent" then you need to understand the physics of the swing and how to get your body to produce consistant power.

I had a teacher who was nice too. I dumped him because he would just give me tips and drills – I wanted explanations. I wish I could find an instructor who is like your perfectionist and not just one who wants to bait you into the next le$$on.

p.s. You may stink at the game for while during the transition, but don't give up!

At this level (forgot how to make the ball fly), I suggest you to go on with the non-perfectionist swing.
There is no perfect swing. But we always can differ an ugly swing with the good swing.
Then, maybe few months or years, go to the other teacher.

Would you rather hire a coach who is a swing perfectionist, or just someone who can make you feel a good swing?

When amateurs watch the pros play golf on tv, they see that the entire best players on the planet take divots once they hit an iron shot, particularly a excessive iron shot. Then, they attempt to emulate them on the course, but do not get the desired results. why?

I have been playing golf for almost 15 years, I am 24 and I will never have and Handicap below 7. so I will never be able to be a "Pro" but I would still like to make a business of teaching people to golf. I am a heavyset guy and could specialize in teaching other heavy guys.

I would like to start people off for the same price as a "group lesson" with a pro, but instead of a group lesson you get 1-on-1 with me. then when the golfers get too good for me to teach I can send them to a pro.

I am wondering if there are any cerficiations or accrediations that I could acquire to show people that I know what I am talking about.

Amateur Swing Coach?

The more first place certificates you have from armature tournaments the Higher your possibilities of teaching. if you haven't ever one then you will not likely be able to teach

Be careful if you want to teach golf. you will lose your Amatuer status if you accept money for lessons. the only expections are golf coaches at schools and pe teachers. and even these are not suppose to be hired as a teacher/coach based on their ability. weird huh? if you really want to teach work toward a PGA degree.

Why don't you consider United States Golf Teachers Federation (USGTF). Think the website is www.usgtf.org or something like that.

I'm not sure how good they are but the USGTF certified coaches in my country stinks.

Jim Furyk headed to the first tee Saturday in the Tour Championship and heard his father and coach, Mike Furyk, give him a simple instruction to “just play golf.”

It’s a reminder he has uttered over the years not to get too caught up in mechanics or strive for the perfect swing, but to hit the ball, find it and get it in the hole as quickly as possible.

That might not be bad advice for Sunday, either.

Just play golf. Don’t think about the $10 million at stake.

Furyk twice walked off a green happy to make bogey, made consecutive birdies late in his round that put him atop the leaderboard at East Lake and wound up with an even-par 70 for a one-shot lead over Retief Goosen and Luke Donald.

That set the stage for a FedEx Cup finale that has never had so many possibilities.

Furyk, Goosen and Donald all can win the FedEx Cup and its $10 million bonus by winning the Tour Championship, which comes with a $1.35 million prize of its own. so can Geoff Ogilvy, only three shots behind. Paul Casey and Charley Hoffman, both within five shots of the lead, can win golf’s biggest payoff without even winning the tournament.

And there are enough video boards along the back nine that players should have a pretty good idea what they need to do.

“The first part of the scenario is I have to win, and the rest of it I can’t control,” Furyk said. “So the idea, really … it makes it very simple. I have to win tomorrow, and the idea is just to go out and do the best I can to do that.”

Furyk was at 8-under 202, and a victory Sunday could be a real breakthrough. He has never won three times in a season, and his third PGA Tour title this year might warrant strong consideration for player of the year.

Even so, Furyk is aware not only of how many players are behind, but how many possibilities exist.

—A victory gives Furyk or Goosen the FedEx Cup as long as Casey isn’t the runner-up or Hoffman doesn’t finish third alone.

Holding Those Legs Steady and Still

We would all like to have a fluid, beautiful swing like Adam Scott, power off the tee like Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods, and the ability to repeat that swing round after round, day after day.

But what is holding back most amateurs from that silky smooth and powerful swing?

Most likely, it’s your hamstrings and your low back.

We are going to explore the connection between your hammies, your low back and that less than PGA pro, Golf Magazine type golf swing.

Let’s start with your hamstrings. Most of us think we know where our hamstrings are located and what they do, but do we really? We’re always hearing about baseball players, football players and basketball players coming down with hamstring injuries. It’s a common problem in a lot of sports, including golf.

What are they and what do they do?

The hamstrings are a group of muscles located on the back part of your upper leg. The hamstring group consists of three individual muscles: the semimembrinosus, semitendinosus, and the biceps femoris. To make it easier on my typing and to your eyes we’ll just keep it simple and call them your hamstrings. The function of the hamstrings in your body is pretty complex.

I’ll try to simplify it for you. First off, your hamstrings bend your knee. also, your hamstrings help stabilize your hip area. So when you are performing almost any activity the hamstrings are essentially helping to hold your hips in place. They are great stabilizers. So the next time you are on the dance floor trying to do your best impression of Fred Astaire or John Travolta, think about how hard those hammies are working!

In addition to bending the knee and stabilizing the hips, your hamstrings help with your rotation of your leg internally and externally. Let’s try something. Right now, stand up and turn your foot inward (pigeon toed) and then rotate your foot out (duck toed). These two foot/leg movements use the hamstrings to make the inward and outward movements happen. this is certainly not a complete list, but it should give you insight to how involved the hamstrings are when it comes to the human body.

What about my aching low back!

I think we all know where the low back is located, especially if you are a golfer. If you experience low back issues like half of the golfers in the world, you intimately know where the low back is and how it affects your daily life.

The low back is essentially a group of small muscles. All these little muscles together comprise the lower back region of the body. The lower back muscles have a lot of functions. To start off, the lower back muscles help stabilize your spine at all times, especially during movement. in addition, the lower back muscles are used extensively to rotate the torso and to bend your hips forward/backward. Keep in mind that the lower back muscles of your body are probably active and functioning 99% of the time. They are worked a ton! every day. When’s the last time you pulled weeds in the backyard for hours? how did your low back and hammies feel the next day?

Alright now, what about that choppy swing my golf buddies give me a hard time about?

Now, onto the golf swing. The golf swing is essentially a total body movement that requires the body to move through multiple planes of motion. The body has to stabilize your moving body, accelerate aggressively on the downswing, rotate quickly, and decelerate in a very short order during the golf swing. this causes enormous stress on the body and results in fatigue all over. For some of us that fatigue sets in on the range, and for others it’s after a weekend of 72 holes and a few hands of poker with the guys. For the PGA Tour pros, hopefully it’s after walking up the 18th on Sunday in front of TV cameras and thousands of spectators.

The connection is that hamstrings and the low back are working extremely hard during the golf swing, and quite often either one or the other (low back or hamstrings or even both) gets “tight.” The tightness we talk about is something most all of you have felt at one time or another. And I think it would be safe to say that in addition to feeling these muscles getting tight you know what effect it has on your game.

So, knowing that these two body parts are connected to the swing, now what?
