I've always hit all my irons straight this just came out of nowhere. it gets worse the longer the iron gets. I'm still hitting the driver straight but I'm even hooking the fairway woods. Please help…..

Well, im not exactly sure what the pinpoint problem is b/c there are so many ways to hook the ball, but the most common problem is most likely that your turning your hands over before you hit the ball. this used to happen to me sometimes and it causes the club head to close befoer impact and a major hook resulted. Try not to turn your hands over until after contact. Also, try either putting the ball further up or further back in your stance to see what feel comfortable for you, but if you can keep your hands from turning over, hooks will disappear.

ok the guy about turning ur hands over is right but it is harder to cure it then just saying don't do that. try opening your hips alittle bit before you take the club back that way you will open up alittle bit at impact and it may keep you from turning you hands over. because it will open your club face alttle bit. it is the oposite of curing a slice because you want to close your hips slightly before your backswing. just try differentthings. also you may be coming way in to out on your swing. if so try looking at a dimple on the back of the ball that is straight back or alittle away from you because you will hit where your eyes are looking. just liike when your driving down the road and you look off the side of the road you tend to drift that way. same thing with golf if you are looking at a certain area on the ball that is where you are going to hit it. just try little things.

Let's not mess with your swing. That is too much to remember. you should be able to correct it all at address. three things you can tinker with involving your set-up. Try a "weaker" grip. If you are right handed, turn your left hand about a quarter inch to the left on your grip. Also, move the ball up in your stance about an inch further forward than normal. then, you can also move your right foot forward (in the direction your toes are pointing) an inch or two to promote a fade. with some combination of the three, you should be able to fix it without trying to change your swing. good luck.

well i asked that question lastweek and got some awsome answers,but i just simply opened the club face (almost all the way open) i know it may look funny but looks don't shave any strokes off. when i started doing this for some odd reason i gained about 20 yards per club. i know this may not work for you but i just thaught something simple would help

The prep golf postseason will get into full swing today with boys’ regional action teeing off at Edgewood Golf course in McNabb for the Putnam County regional.

All local boys’ squads, including Amboy/LaMoille, Bureau Valley, Hall, Princeton and St. Bede will compete against a 16-team field that also includes Mendota and the host Panthers of Putnam County.

Mendota, Putnam County, Princeton, St. Bede and Earlville should all be in the running to be one of the three teams to advance, with PC and PHS expected to battle for the team title. Princeton placed second at last week’s NCIC conference meet, where Mendota placed third and St. Bede fourth.

“we have had a couple of solid individual performances as of late, and I would hope to see that continue on Tuesday,” said PHS coach Brian Church, whose squad was the top Class 1A finisher in the L-P Invite Saturday. “if we play to our ability level, I would like to think that we have a good chance of advancing to the sectional.”

The Tigers will be led into battle by NCIC MVP Collin Slattery, who captured first place at the conference meet with a two-over 74, and fellow All-NCIC selection Cole Evenson, who finished fifth at conference with a 79, and posted the all-time PHS record with a 9-hole round of 32 late in the season at Hunter’s Ridge.

Hall coach Tom Bauer said that the Red Devils will be short of the services of senior Kyle Cissell, who led Hall at the NCIC conference meet with a score of 86, but will miss postseason play for undisclosed reasons. “Which probably leaves us at trying to get one or two individuals out,” said Bauer.

The Red Devils’ best bet to advance comes from senior Dean Colmone, but Bauer is not counting out anyone on his Red Devils roster from snagging one of the five individual tickets to sectionals.

“Dean Colmone has an excellent chance to move on if he just plays a steady round. For anyone else to advance, they would have to be at the top of their games, but one never knows, as several of them have shown flashes of that level at one time or another this year,” said Bauer.

St. Bede’s No. 1 golfer Alex Harrison, who finished seventh at the NCIC meet with an 82, will look to help lead his Bruins to a sectional appearance.

Bruins’ coach Rich Cummings said that Harrison has been on his game heading toward the postseason.

“He’s just keeping things simple … just letting the game happen instead of trying to make shots that really aren’t there for him,” said Cummings.

If the Bruins are unable to capture a top three team finish, Cummings said the Bruins’ best bets to advance along with Harrison are Adam Sickley, whose scores had been dropping late in the season, and Grant Bosnich.

“We’re just trying to see how things shake out for Tuesday,” said Cummings.

Bureau Valley coach Duane Price said his squad, which recently finished fourth at the three Rivers’ Conference meet in Geneseo “have been playing well as of late,” and wants to put together a day where all six golfers bring their best in hopes of swiping one of the last team spots to advance to sectional.

If the Storm are unable to snag the team advancement Price said that any of the Storm’s top three of Riley DeBrock, Alex Knisley and Jacob Nord could make it out individually if they perform to their potentials.

Sectional qualifying teams and individuals will make their way to the Golf Club of Illinois in Algonquin for the Elgin Sectional next Monday.

Golf Driving Tips That Will Help You

I felt like Ralphie Parker from A Christmas story as I opened the mailbox everyday for the past week and a half. I was anxiously awaiting the arrival of my new custom Under Armour Performance Mouthwear with Armour Bite Technology (Armour Bite) that I was fitted for at IMG Academy last week. Now that it finally arrived, I can begin testing the performance enhancing qualities it is said to possess.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the Armour Bite, it is a product developed by both Under Armour and Bite Tech. According to Under Armour, the product delivers a host of physical benefits that help you train harder and compete at a higher level. The science behind this product is simple. During athletically stressful moments, your natural reaction is to clench your jaw. Your clenched jaw and teeth compress your temporomandibular joint (TMJ), triggering the release of excess amounts of performance-sapping hormones, called cortisol, that produce stress, fatigue and distraction. this patented technology prevents your teeth from clenching and pivots your jaw forward to relieve pressure on the TMJ. without these energy draining hormones your body can unleash its full potential.

I was presented with all these scientific facts during the Combine 360 Welcoming Dinner I attended at IMG Academy, a week and a half ago. Dr. bill Belanoff from Bite Tech and Raghib “Rocket” Ismail provided a convincing case about the positive effects of UA Performance Mouthwear, specifically in relation to concussions. Currently in professional sports this has been an issue which has demanded attention. Athletes are stronger and hit harder than ever. According to Under Armour their Performance Mouthguards have been shown to reduce the G-Force impact of blows to the jaw by up to 20 percent.

With all these facts in front of me, I decided to unofficially become a test subject. During Rocket Ismail’s speech he mentioned a golf outing he had attended. At one of the holes a gentlemen was recording swing speeds. The gist of the story was Rocket dazzled the swing measurer with his explosive club speed. Several weeks later during a similar situation, the two men once again crossed paths. this time Rocket’s swing was significantly slower. it was then that he realized he was not wearing his Armour Bite.

With this story in mind I took my 14-year-old elongated clubs on a relaxing Sunday round of golf. when I walked into the country club, I told the elderly owner that I was from SLAM Magazine and was writing an article about a product from Under Armour. The man stared blankly back at me. I can tell by his confused glare that he had no idea what SLAM or Under Armour was. I was lucky if he knew what a magazine was. Needless to say I did not receive a discount.

My foursome consisted of my friends Chris Hertz and the affectionately named “Brothers Matt” (Matt Parisi and Matt Edwards). all three of them are avid golfers, who from April to November make these Sunday rounds a habit. To make matters worse I had to compete in a “Match Play” style tournament. I was in a little over my head, especially when I sent my first shot of the day off a tree. I wasn’t sure how conclusive my testing would be because a) I suck at golf, and b) My group would surely lose patience when I try to launch errant ball after errant ball out of play.

It took me around nine holes to warm up, since I hadn’t swung a club in over a year. I wore the Armour Bite during my drives; however, they were so poorly hit that I could not make an accurate assessment. it wasn’t until the wide open 15th, 16th and 17th holes that I felt I could test my power without having to walk back to the clubhouse to purchase more balls. Those tests also proved to be unconvincing. I was hitting two balls at a time, one with the piece in and one without. I would hit the first one good, and then top the second, then vice versa. this repeated itself over the next three holes.

Finally I arrived at the 18th tee box with my pairing down one hole. I still did not have conclusive proof that this mouth piece could improve the speed and power of my swing. I could already hear my wife hollering at me about missing a day of Sunday basketball training to go golfing. Now I don’t know if it was that or the competitor in me, but I put the mouth piece in an unloaded on the ball. I have never in my life hit a shot like that. it was dead straight and an estimated (rough) 300 yards. I wound up about 60 yards short of the green on a par 5. unfortunately my short game did not match up with the drive and it took me three chips to get it on the green. I eventually won the hole thanks to some fancy putting and unlucky shots by the competition.

I believe all the participants were impressed with the newfound power of my swing, all except the tree off the 12th tee box which I launched several forceful drives into. (I guess the Armour Bite doesn’t help my slice.) Up until the last hole, I would have said that the first test was inconclusive, but after that drive I believe I may have had a few less cortisols floating around. Test 1: PASSED

If your grip is too strong it is most likely you won’t hit a great shot.

one of the most significant swing tips ever given is to slow down. Even though it sounds very simple, many new players struggle to understand the significance. Don’t rush to get the club to the height of the backswing.

another quick tip for improving your game is making sure the ball is placed in the proper spot, in your stance, for each club. For the longer clubs, the ball should be further forward in your stance. when using your driver, the ball should be about inline with the heel of your left foot. As you use shorter clubs, the ball should be somewhat further back. the ball should be in the centre of your stance when using a wedge.

Rhythm and routine are extremely important when it comes to golf. Practice your golf swing as often as you can. This will give your mind and muscles a physical memory of what to do each time you make your golf swing. Soon it will become second nature and you will no longer need to think about your golf swing.

Remember that the quickest way to reduce your handicap is not to be the longest player on the course but the player who is on the most fairways.

Success Tips To Improve Your Golf Swing

It only took half the season, but the Wesley Chapel girls golf team finally had a full match.

The first seven matches for the Wildcats ended in forfeits since first-year coach Chuck Yingling had just two girls on roster (junior and last year’s sole returner, Savanna Bischof, and talented freshman, Hana Lee).

Even though their first match was a loss to Sunlake on Sept. 21, Yingling now has four players and is expecting more. he credits some of that to Lee, who is averaging 39.4 this season, including a season-low 37. She’s garnered more interest in the sport by having a player solid enough to re-build around.

“(Lee) is certainly a good place to start,” Yingling said. “I’ve got her for a few more years, so we’ll start with her and work our way up.”

Bischof was never discouraged as the only returner from last season, but she also looks forward to the rest of this season, and the next, with Lee.

“I like being the only returner because then I get to start something,” Bischof said. “It never bothered me, but it’s great having a player like Hana because I like having someone where I can watch their swing and learn something to improve my swing. She’s a great golfer.”

Though young, the Zephyrhills boys are on a roll. that is, according to coach Chuck Lail, until they met Mitchell and lost a rain-shortened match Tuesday.

“We had won four matches in a row, but we weren’t our best (Tuesday) against Mitchell,” Lail said of his 15-golfer squad. “We’re young, but everyone is well ahead of where they were at this point last year, and we just keep getting better. we like our progress, but there is plenty of room for improvement (before the conference tournament Oct. 11).”

Leading the way for the Bulldogs (5-4) is junior Cody Nichols and sophomore Cory Bahr, both of which are averaging 38 this season and both shaved four strokes off last season’s average.

“Cody’s short game has improved, but he really improved his course management by not taking so many risky shots he shouldn’t (be taking),” Lail said. “While Cory has just grown up, getting bigger physically, which has added 20-30 yards to his drives.”

Those improvements were seen as Zephyrhills lost, 153-157, to Wiregrass Ranch on Sept. 23, a vast difference from the past season.

“With three more matches, we want to finish out the season strong,” Lail said. “After that, we feel good about going into postseason.”

Down to the Wiregrass

Bulls coach Nick Cuviello not only wants a rematch, but wants the perfect position at the conference tournament, which will be hosted by River Ridge at Seven Springs Golf and Country Club in New Port Richey.

Wiregrass (9-1) wants a chance to avenge its Sept. 21, three-stroke loss to undefeated Mitchell, including defending its 2009 SAC title.

“I think it’ll be a good rivalry,” Cuviello said. “A bunch of teams are jumbled together with three losses — though any of them could make a run at the title and come in and steal (the title) — but we want it to come down to us (and Mitchell).

“Being first or second, like us, you control your own destiny, and we like that, so we can just play our game, and hopefully, score better than them.”

Teams with three losses, such as Fivay, Wesley Chapel and Land O’ Lakes, have the potential to play spoiler that day, but Cuviello also knows those teams will be coming after them, and Mitchell as well.

“There are still good teams behind us,” he said. “We’re not going to put anything past them because we’ve been that team that got overlooked and we have a title to defend now.”

Even at 6-3, the Land O’ Lakes squad is full of confidence. to put them ahead of similarly ranked teams such as Fivay and Wesley Chapel, coach D.J. Holland plans on getting in a full practice round at Seven Springs before the conference tournament.

“It’s a tricky course, which anyone knows if they’ve played it,” Holland said. “Obviously, the more they know how the ball will land and roll out there, the more it will help them out (during the tournament).”

Holland will be looking to get all his golfers in sync during a match.

Either their No. 1 and No. 2, Jon Kopsell and Robbie Niemann, will have great matches, but other players will struggle. at other times, the top golfers will have an off day and the others, such as Brad Weaver, Matt Mooney and Jesse Boger, keep the team ahead. Holland hopes a tough 157-165 loss to Wiregrass on Thursday will be the motivation they need.

“I have so much confidence in my guys that they’ll find momentum down the stretch here,” Holland said. “They have the talent (to play well together), we just have to put four or five good rounds together at the same time.”

The Falcons (7-3) rescheduled its Oct. 6 match against district foe Wesley Chapel to Monday, which will be a tri-match with Pasco. It will be held at Meadow Oaks Golf and Country Club in Hudson. the Falcons will look to continue their impressive run as a first-year squad, touting junior Austin Padova, the only Pasco County boys golfer to make states in 2009. however, the Wildcats will bring top seniors Brandon Mumaw and Jacob Fleck, both of which shoot in the 30s.

How to Use a Free Golf Swing Video To Help Improve your Game

It seems that we always talk about how there is “no such thing as a free lunch”. the fact is that when it comes to golf instruction, this couldn’t be further from the true. nothing will be able to help you as much as your instructor and your lessons, but there is a lot of free information online that can help you help yourself.

There are many websites, mostly those from the major world golf organizations, which offer free golf swing videos of the pros and instructors right on their site. by using this free resource, you can even perform your own sing analysis. Sound complicated? Just be creative.

Watch Video Relating to your Instructions

After a golf lesson, go to one of the golf websites and find a free golf swing video that highlights something you learned or discussed at your lesson. Watch the video and learn what it looks like when done correctly. that way, you know how it should feel from your lesson and how it should look from the video.

See your own Swing

Next, either video tape your swing, or in the absence of video capabilities, watch yourself take a few swings in a mirror. Compare what you are doing to the video to do your own little amateur swing analysis. then, next lesson you have, you can talk to your instructor about your swing and what you saw on the free golf swing video you took from the internet.

Use Other Video Resources

The free golf swing videos are not the only clips that are valuable online. you will also find that you can get a visual on what a particular drill should look like, what the roll of a proper putt looks like, and even what the best equipment is. the internet is a great resource for your game; don’t be afraid to use it.

The only problem with free online videos is that they are often large so take forever to download. also some sites offer golf video clips that are either of poor visual quality or poor technical quality.

Always review a site to find out if their video tips are performed by professionals or just weekend warriors, the last thing you want is to spend ages downloading a 5 minute video only to find it was made on a handy cam by some guys who have only been playing golf for a couple of weeks.

How to Use A Free Golf Swing Video To Help Improve Your Game

I can’t seem to consistently make putts from 5 feet and in. My speed control is bad leaving me tough putts for come backers. Can you help?

I want to sincerely thank all my students for writing in questions like Tom did.

I truly enjoy helping each of you with your game and will from time to time, instead of answering on the blog, take your questions and write an article to help them and each of you.

Tom expresses concern on his short putts and the main reason for this problem according to him is his distance control. I break putting down into three areas and you will learn this soon when I release my putting DVD, but the key to making putts boils down to speed, roll, and break. In its simplest form speed is a result of practice and a great drill to help Tom with his speed control is my front, middle, back drill.

1. First find a straight putt from about 4 feet.
2. Hit the first putt where the ball barely drops in over the front edge.
3. Hit the second putt where it falls in the middle of the hole.
4. Hit the third putt where it hits off the dirt in the back of the cup before falling in.
5. Spend about 5 minutes varying up your objective from front, middle, and back.
6. Now practice this drill from about 15 feet with a big breaker and choose your speed and break accordingly. I am not concerned with makes and misses, but most importantly your distance control.

Most people struggle with distance control because they do not practice the proper way. Speed in its simplest form boils down to practice and I promise you that most people do not practice their speed control on short putts. In order to improve your short putts it is essential that you practice your speed control on these putts. Working on the front, middle, back drill is a great way to improve your control on these short putts and lower your scores as a result.

Speed Control

i don't know what im doing wrong its only with my fairway woods i usually pull the ball please help it is driving me bunkers literally!

If you are pulling the fairway shot you are letting the right hand dominate the swing. You may have that hand turned too far under the grip ( strong ). so bring it more to the top and see what happens.. That should cure your pull.

You can step in or out with your front foot depending on which way the ball is going. also you can try turning the club head a little.
