LOS ANGELES — Tiger Woods said Monday he’s hoping to cap “a long, frustrating year” with a victory at the golfer’s own charity tournament in Thousand Oaks, Calif., in December — if he doesn’t win earlier.

“My game’s coming around,” he told reporters in advance of his Chevron World Challenge. “Everything’s headed in a positive direction now.”

The annual 18-player tournament, which benefits the Tiger Woods Foundation and other charities, is scheduled Dec. 2-5 at Jack Nicklaus-designed Sherwood Country Club.

Woods has won the event four times but has missed the tournament the last two years. He was recovering from knee surgery in 2008, and last year he withdrew because the event came only days after his Thanksgiving night car accident in Florida that set in motion his sensational sex scandal.

In a tumultuous season for Woods that started late with the Masters in April, he has struggled to regain the form that enabled him to win 14 major tournaments. Woods also is in danger of losing the no. 1 spot in the world golf rankings, a position he has held for more than five consecutive years, to Englishman Lee Westwood in the coming weeks.

Woods, 34, hasn’t won this year and has only two top-five finishes in 12 PGA Tour events. But with the help of a new swing coach, Sean Foley, Woods said he’s turning things around.

“I’m still working toward it,” Woods said in a video teleconference from Orlando, Fla. “I don’t have it all dialed in yet. I have two more events prior to the Chevron event” in China and Australia. “Hopefully, I can get two more (wins) before I get to Chevron.”

Woods said he’s also making progress with his personal life in the aftermath of the scandal, which led to his divorce from Elin Nordegren this summer. they have two children.

“Certainly I’m a lot more at peace now,” Woods said. “Everyone’s getting used to the new living conditions. The kids are adjusting.

“I learned a lot about myself and I learned how things went wrong, why they went wrong, and to take a pretty deep and introspective look at myself, and there weren’t a lot of things I liked about it,” Woods said.

“I come from a much better place, much more grounded place now than I ever have before. I’d like to get back to a full playing schedule next year and be ready for the big events again.”

Other players in the Chevron tournament include this year’s U.S. Open winner, Graeme McDowell, and PGA Championship winner Martin Kaymer.

The others are defending tournament winner Jim Furyk, Steve Stricker, Paul Casey, Rory McIlroy, Luke Donald, Matt Kuchar, Dustin Johnson, Ian Poulter, Hunter Mahan, Zach Johnson, Anthony Kim, Bubba Watson, Sean O’Hair, Camilo Villegas and Stewart Cink.

The event’s $5 million purse ranges from $1.2 million for the winner to $140,000 for the last-place finisher.

hello, i ave just bought a wii and am looking to buy some games, i would like to buy games that invole doing actions, as i have already have a ps3 which i can sit and hold a controller on. i have already thought of getting tiger woods golf, as you can actually swing to hit the ball, also i have seen the new table tennis rockstar game.

are there any more you would recommend, as i say i would love action games, like boxing that involes using the motion sensitivity function. thankyou

POTOMAC, Md. (AP) – Buoyed by birdies on the first five holes, Russ Cochran shot a course-record 6-under 64 to take a one-shot lead at the Senior Players Championship on Friday.

Cochran is at 6 under for the tournament and is trying for his third win in his last four events on the Champions Tour. Cochran, who will turn 52 at the end of this month, is also trying for his first major victory at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm.

“We got it going early and then like you do a lot of times, you kind of hold on for dear life after that,” Cochran said. “But the start was great.”

Michael Allen remains in second at 5 under after a second-round 67, and Mark O'Meara shot another 68 to stand alone at 4 under. First-round leader Tom Kite followed his first-round 67 with an even-par 70, leaving him in a tie with Jeff Sluman.

“The golf course is very difficult, and if you can play the weekend under par, you're going to be in very good shape,” Sluman said after his second-round 67. “That's what you work for.”

Loren Roberts and Jay Don Blake were five shots off the pace, while Mike Goodes and Joe Ozaki were tied for eighth, six shots behind. Champions Tour points leader Bernhard Langer shot 73, while rival Fred Couples withdrew from the tournament due to a back ailment.

Cochran, who had a long, workmanlike career on the PGA Tour, has broken through over the last month on the Champions Tour with wins at the Songdo Championship and the SAS Championship, a surge he credits to becoming a more aggressive player.

On Friday, Cochran put that practice in motion. Starting on the back nine, he attacked friendly pin placements and quickly established himself at the top of the leaderboard.

“We kind of decided today we were going to be a little more aggressive if we could because there's not that many great bailouts,” Cochran said. “So we hit it pretty much at the flag. the more times you feel like you can step up and at least make that aggressive swing and try to stay with your line, I feel better about myself and my game.”

After his hot start, Cochran added a birdie at no. 2 and then took what the course gave him to finish his solid round.

“I've been streaky this year – it allows me to be a little more patient throughout the rest of the round,” Cochran said.

Sluman, who has played with Cochran for 20 years on both the PGA and Champions tours, has not been surprised at his friend's recent resurgence.

“He's playing with a lot of confidence and he's freewheeling it out there,” Sluman said. “I don't think a lot of people realize what kind of player he was. I knew right from the get-go how talented he was.”

Allen kept pace with Cochran for most of the day before a bogey at no. 7 dropped him into second place, where he hopes to make a move during the weekend play against a top five that boasts four major championship winners.

“It will be fun to go out and play those guys the next few days,” said Allen, who won the 2009 Senior PGA Championship. “It's a challenging course and you can't just get away with cheaping it around here.”

CITRUS PARK – Ron Deckard is a pitcher and a pitcher.

The 69-year-old Town ‘N Country resident is a world champion at horseshoes – four years in a row. Deckard won the Senior Men Division World Horseshoe Pitching Championship and the Senior Men’s Class A Championship on July 26 through Aug. 7 at Cedar Rapids, Iowa, adding to already impressive resume as an 11-time Florida State Men Horseshoe Pitching Champion.

These accomplishments, as well as the large trophy and $1,500 he earned, Deckard credits to his days as a fast-pitch softball hurler.

“My pitching helped my pitching later on,” said Deckard, who is the 14th-ranked horseshoe pitcher in the nation and the second-ranked in Florida. “My windup and coming through (in softball) helped with horseshoes because I wasn’t the fastest pitcher, but I could put it accurately over the plate.

“I never walked anybody, which means I could put it in any spot.”

Deckard also points out many bowlers are also horseshoe pitchers, including the top horseshoer in the world. Called the greatest horseshoe pitcher ever, Alan Francis has a 90 percent pitching rate, meaning he hits a ringer, or a point, 9 out of 10 times.

Deckard’s percentage rises and falls in the low to mid-70s. It was 71.07 percent during his championship run last month. that was 10 points higher than the runner-up, though it never used to be that way.

“I just couldn’t get over that 50 percent mark,” Deckard said. “It wasn’t what it is now until about 2005, after many years of practice later.”

Deckard grew up in Elkinsville, Ind., a small town where residents did what most in the Midwest do during family gatherings: pitch horseshoes. Deckard learned the game from his dad but had no idea it was an organized sport until years later.

In 1964, while serving in the Air Force, he transferred to MacDill Air Force Base, where he met Gloria, his wife of 44 years and mother of his two children.

It wasn’t until 1977 that Deckard read about the World Horseshoe Pitching Championship, won by Carl Steinfeldt. Deckard worked as a computer analyst for the Pinellas County government in Clearwater, and he joined Clearwater Horseshoe Club.

It wouldn’t be until 1991 that horseshoes became an obsession. For three months, Deckard practiced daily, throwing more horseshoes than a blacksmith owns.

“He knew when he started that (40 percent to 50 percent) ringer level wasn’t going to do any damage,” said Chuck Johnston, president of the horseshoe club. “Back then, he was throwing 400 shoes a day to get better. It’s why he’s a very dedicated thrower and why he has 11 Florida state championships.”

Deckard also became a sponge, soaking up every technique and tip. Turns out, pitching isn’t much different from a golf swing, the motion and follow through being critical. Deckard throws the most commonly used 11/4 turn pitch, though there are a handful of others, a few of which he’s mastered, as well.

“I’ve read every book in the world on horseshoes, and it comes down to the mental part of the game – it’s the biggest part of the game,” said Deckard, who doesn’t golf. “But I keep my backswing slow and make my follow through smooth.

“There, it’s like golf.”

Horseshoe pitchers, when competing, walk up to the pit as friends.

They share jokes, slap backs, even compare photos of kids and grandkids. It’s a camaraderie Deckard loves, but it ends as soon as the first horseshoe is tossed. The laughter and smiles fade, and the courts become eerily quiet.

Deckard may love to compete, but he knows it should be fun, too.

“I’ve learned a lot from Ron,” said Jim Hayden, Deckard’s longtime friend and doubles partner. they have won the Florida Men’s Doubles State Championship 10 times, including this year. “He’s willing to help anyone willing to throw a horseshoe. I’m not near the pitcher Ron is, but he wants everyone to become better.”

“Every time we get a new member (at the horseshoe club), Ron goes out of his way to teach them everything he can,” Johnston said. “That’s the type of player he’s always been.”

Hayden and Johnston agree that Deckard’s dedication and softball pitching, have led to his horseshoe success. they say it is Deckard’s hand-eye coordination and release-point consistency that have earned him championships.

Two more consecutive championships and Deckard will break the record. He hopes they come before his ability deteriorates and requires a move to the 30-foot men’s league.

“You really got to work your butt off to get to that top level,” Deckard said. “I know everyone at (the top) level worked their butt off and practiced their heart out to get there. … It’s the challenge and competitiveness of it all, just like any other sport.

“I don’t like to lose – and don’t become a bad sport when I do lose – so that’s why I’m always going to give it everything I’ve got. It’s why, if I do break the record, why I broke the record.”

As a toddler, my daughter had to be in serious motion to fall asleep at naptime. Long, sustained, and fast motion.

I know, the car nap is probably not the best idea for a host of reasons, especially with the really small ones. but a desperate dad is a desperate dad.

When she was a baby, I could do it on foot, walking quick enough in the Baby Bjorn so that she’d slowly lose the power to hold up her head (though I’d have to check a mirror or shoe store window to make sure she was out).

But as a toddler it took a car. it was like the DeLorean in Back to the Future. Hit a sustained 88 mph (in my case it was more like 58) to go nuclear and reach the desired zone. We didn’t have Libyan terrorists firing at us, but at times it felt like it.

Then, after wasting loads of gas, polluting the air, and putting us both in freeway danger just for a little peace, a quiet street, and then … two hours of mind-numbing boredom.

Some folks can park right next to the house or in the garage and have different options. but stranded with nothing to do, I and my fellow caretakers decided to use the time for self improvement and fulfillment. so when your child is napping in the car and you don’t want to move her, here are some tips.

• Try Audio Books: it was here that I broke my lifelong aversion to books on tape, and stopped being annoyed by those reading voices. I found that a voice reading a dull adult novel helped lull the tot, then soothed me after she was out as I eased the seat back. I got through all of the Harry Potter books this way. though I did wake the daughter with my sniffly weeping when (spoiler alert!) Dumbledore died.

• Learn a Foreign Language: Mandarin and Italian await you! Like the audio books with more practical value and less crying. Also may seep into your child’s dreams and take hold. We do crazier things for their development. 

• Take Up Knitting: A simple bag, a pair of needles, and a few skeins of yarn in the trunk make for hours of obsessive, quiet pleasure. My extended family was all decked out in beautiful scarves after a season of daughter-napping and wife-knitting.

• Meditation: As we learn in Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, the Buddha is everywhere, not just in fields of lotus. (Does lotus grow in fields?) that includes the driver’s seat of your Camry. Take up your seated mountain pose and be one with the roadside.

• Athletics: This may seem the strangest of the bunch but it’s possible. A soccer-obsessed friend had a tiny ball and he’d stand next to his car during nap time and try to keep it aloft for hours. I had a single golf club I would take out to swing. and for real fitness, old-fashioned jumping jacks are all the rage now, and you can do most standing yoga poses about anywhere. you could also play with a hacky sack if you’re 20, in college, and it’s 1992.

• Nap yourself: I never did this one because it just scared me too much. I worried that car, baby, and clothes would somehow all be stolen from under me while I slept. but if you’re so inclined ….

• Do Errands!*: It’s also a great moment to just leave the window cracked, hang up your “No Baby on Board” sign, and do some quick grocery shopping, get a haircut, or visit with friends inside Starbucks.
