MATTOON – Don’t put it past Ashley Warrem to signal for “help”behind Mattoon girls’ golf coach Natalie Ambuehl’s back.

“One day we held up a sign like she was kidnapping us,” Warrem saidof a road trip this season. “She still doesn’t know.”

Whenever Ambuehl reads this, she will.

Once the surprise wears off, the coach can have another reason tolaugh on the way to Forsyth for the state golf tournament.

She gets to watch both Warrem and senior classmate Tiffany Wolf asqualifiers for the IHSA Class AA girls’ state golf tournament wherethey have a practice round today before the finals on Friday andSaturday at Hickory Point Golf course.

Wolf, the individual medalist at both the Champaign CentralRegional and Pekin Sectional, is making her second straight trip tothe state and this year is glad to have at least the company offirst-time state qualifier Warrem for a practice round followed bysome planned shopping.

“She helps me be calm,” Wolf said. “We played together at the BestBall tournament. It’s good to have comedic relief.”

Wolf said: “I am more comical. She’s more serious.”

Warrem played some serious golf too as the third individualsectional qualifier with an 88 at the Champaign Central Regional atthe University of Illinois Blue course and then tied for seventhamong individual state qualifiers in the Pekin Sectional where sheshot 86 at Lick Creek Golf Club.

“My freshman year it was all jokes and then it got more serious,”Warrem said.

Wolf was not even on the golf team as a freshman participating onthe volleyball team and Wavette dance squad before deciding to jointhe golf team as a junior using the background in the sport she hadthrough her family.

“That was a good choice for me,” Wolf said of eventually playingfor the golf team. “If I would have done it differently maybe itwouldn’t have worked out.”

With no burnout in just her second season of high school golf, Wolfnow is looking to put a big finish on her senior season thatincluded winning her regional with a 2-over-par-76 at the U of IBlue course and then her sectional with an 80 at the par-73 LickCreek.

She had several other high tournament finishes including arunner-up individual Big 12 finish leading her Mattoon team to theconference championship.

So the goal for state?

“Shoot par,” a laughing Warrem said slapping her teammate on theback.

“No, I don’t want to say that,” Wolf said. “I still want to break80. I still want to be in the top 20.”

Not out of the realm would be an all-state finish in the top10.

“I think anything can happen,” Ambuehl said. “It’s anybody’s win atthis point.”

Wolf said: “It depends on the other girls. you can’t make themshoot any worse. I think it helps being there last year. Last timeI was extremely nervous and tense and it might free up mynerves.”

Warrem, who had been to three sectionals in the past, is now gladto have this first state tournament experience.

“I still want to do well but it feels good to be going,” she said.”I’m a little nervous. It helps having Tiffany there.”

For both Hickory Point is a new experience with neither havingplayed the state meet course until today’s scheduled practiceround.

They figure it is not going to be any more difficult than Pekin’sLick Creek, which was also new to them for Monday’ssectional.

“You don’t have to play a course over and over to know how to playit,” Ambuehl said. “They did well at the sectional and they hadn’tplayed that course either.”

This week was just a bit of polish to the golf strokes.

“I’ll work on my short game,” Wolf said. “You can’t really changeyour swing. It’s mental now.”

Who knows, maybe the state qualifiers will come up with more ofthose signs to play a joke on their coach who is not likely tomind.

“I’m just glad they’re bringing me along for the ride,” Ambuehlsaid.

RANCHO SANTA FE — sometimes the little rewards that Cathi Dowcollects as the girls golf coach at Westview High are hard toquantify.

They aren’t tabulated in the same way as victories, scoringrecords and league titles.

Dow, who did win the school’s first-ever league title in thefall of 2003, the first full year of varsity sports at Westview, isback at the helm of the girls golf program this season.

And as much pride as she took in her team posting its best scoreof the season on Thursday afternoon — a 229 at Morgan Run Resortin a Palomar League dual-meet victory over Mt. Carmel — one of herfavorite moments this season came when one of her players swung …and missed.

Freshman Serina Bhakta shot a 42 and sophomore Arielle Acostaadded a 43 to lead Westview (5-4, 3-4) on Thursday. Mt. Carmel’sVeronica Hodge shot a 50, but the Sundevils only posted fourindividual scores. a minimum of five players must post scores foran official team score.

Dow doesn’t get all hung up on scores, though. After the matchshe happily related an anecdote of a player executing an apparentpractice stroke during a match earlier this season. but there was aproblem.

“Nobody would have known it was a practice swing,” Dow said,”but she said she intended to hit it, and counted it as astroke.

“So I was really proud of her for that. I think they’re learninglife skills: competition, integrity, honesty. It’s that kind ofthing. that integrity is a big piece of it.”

Dow retired this year as a teacher. but when athletic directorChris Carter dropped by her classroom last spring to gauge herinterest in returning to coach the girls golf team, she wasintrigued.

“I had decided to retire (from teaching), so I thought, ‘OK, Ihave time for this,’ ” Dow said. “Now I’m spending more timecoaching than I did teaching.”

Charlotte Orren, a four-year varsity player for Westview, saidshe appreciates Dow’s enthusiasm for the job.

“She’s very supportive,” Orren said, “very, very supportive. Sheloves golf. she just loves to teach us and she is so upbeat. She’slike, ‘OK, girls, (enthusiastically) let’s go play now.’ “

As a girl, Dow said she was drawn into the sport by her father.she said her brothers were not interested in playing, so her dadenlisted her as his playing and practice partner. Currently, Dowcarries a 16-handicap, which means she is a good fit for this groupof players.

“So I’m about equal with my girls — when I shoot 43, I’mexcited,” Dow said. “I’m still learning the game and I love it whenI have a good day. and so I share their enthusiasm when they haveone.

“Serina was just saying, ‘I got a 42. I’ve never had a 42before.’ I think that’s it, we’re working on each one of theirindividual games. and they don’t compete against each other in away that’s negative. They encourage each other so when somebodygets their best score ever, even if it’s a high score. They say,’Way to go. good job.’ That’s what’s fun about golf too. You don’thave to be as good as the person next to you, to play withthem.”

Bhakta, like Dow, picked up the game through her father. Shesaid most of her experience prior to joining the team came on thepractice range. Her game is starting to come along, as evidenced bythe personal-best round she fired on Thursday.

“It’s my first year with Coach Dow and it’s been amazing sofar,” Bhakta said. “I’ve loved the exprience.”
