My 15-year-old son can’t wait for the independence that driving will give him but, at the same time, he recognizes the gravity of commanding a 2-ton vehicle. For this I am grateful.

He also can have a very adult conversation and plead his case with the careful reasoning of Socrates, which almost always startles me. he vowed he could pick out all his own clothes at a store because he knows what goes together and what he likes. Earlier this week he proved himself.

My son is growing up. sometimes I lose his train of thought, though, while he keeps chugging down the track.

One recent afternoon we were eating a snack at a local hangout, catching up with each other since our schedules weren’t overlapping much. Translated, that means I’d hardly seen him since school started — except in the form of a shadow as he whisked past the washer and dryer to collect clean clothes for his closet — which seemed to bother me a whole lot more than it did him.

After a few mundane comments about the football game on the TV, we didn’t mince words. we talked about growing up, trust and responsibility, college, a pretty heavy conversation over an order of chicken wings and chowder.

Enough was enough, so we finished up, and he asked me if I’d take him to a shop down the road for a pair of sweatpants. first I asked him if he had anything else to say.

He paused for just a moment and said, “Yeah.”

I was braced for life-and-death issues.

“Please stop taking so many pictures of me.”

I sat there for a second without blinking and felt like smiling.

“You have enough,” he added. “And it’s annoying whenever I turn around.”

He was referring to some golf matches he played during the summer. to hear my son tell it, I was a paparazzo stalking him and snapping photos willy-nilly.

In reality, I’d snapped three photos of him on my cell phone camera before and after a couple of matches. And, I’d actually taken more pictures of the courses than of him.

(Admittedly, his dad had taken more digital pictures of him, but my son was focusing on my deed, so I addressed his concern, which he treated as seriously as an outbreak of H1N1.)

“Son, do you know why I take pictures of you?” I asked. to think I might have reasons other than sheer annoyance intrigued him.

“You are changing fast,” I said, “and you only have a few years left before you leave home.”

He was looking me in the eye. I continued.

“One of these days — maybe not for years — you are going to want to see pictures of yourself and how you looked at this age,” I said. “And your children and grandchildren will want to see you, too.”

He thought about that, and while he did, I thought about my own photo albums that are stashed on various shelves at home. I even confiscated one album from my mom when my son was first born so I could compare his baby pictures with family photos as he grew up.

My son used to love for me to take his picture — standing in fallen autumn leaves, wading in knee-deep snow or leaning on his favorite front-yard tree. my younger sister used to love having her picture taken, too; now she says she loves to look at those photos from when she was “young and skinny and innocent.”

As I write this, I have a candle burning. its sweet scent of evergreens zips me right back to a small town in southern Missouri, where our Christmas tree from Rozier’s lot, decorated with silver glass ornaments and strings of colored lights, sat in our dining room every single year. Those pictures are in my memory, as well as my album, and I love them.

Maybe my son’s current photographic resistance is because pictures nowadays are so instantaneous. my sister thinks people take pictures for granted as we click one digital photo after another — as opposed to the “olden days” when we didn’t know what we had on a roll of film until it was developed, so we took a whole lot of them just to be safe.

Also, my teenage son knows the world does not revolve around him anymore and finds his mom wanting to take his picture interfering with that knowledge, as well as his desire to be his own man. I get it.

I hope he gets it, too. that life goes by at lightning speed. that one day he might long for the good ol’ days before life’s hard knocks took a good swing at him. that he might miss the days when Mom made homemade spaghetti sauce, baked peach crisp, and even captured a picture or two on her cell phone, just because she loved him.

i am on the highschool golf team and we played the other day against this team that could out drive all of us by at least a hundred yards. and they ended up woopin our buts. please help i need an idea to get more lag and power like th pros do so i can get more distance

be sure to shift all of your weight to your front foot.

spread your legs out more and dont go so fast on the upswing, on your downswing, shift all of your weight toward the ball, keep your head downn the entire time of the swing(keep your eye on the ball)

get a Weight bag and put it on the bottom of the shalt

I know that this can be disheartening…

The amount of effort that you are seeking in order to catch up with the other team, will take away where it really counts. The short game.

They may have how driven you, but it sounds like their short game did not slip either.

I will try to answer from different point.

1. The club you use depends greatly on how well you swing the club. this also depends on your swing speed and more. You must consider the shafts, materials and more when you choose a set of clubs.

A good set of clubs should be measured and determined by your swing and your comfort factor.

2. The type of ball you use to golf will be determined by the way you swing the clubs also. You need to determine the weather and course conditions too. These things will also make a difference with the type of ball you choose and getting the most distance from your shot.

3. your stance, your weight shift, your swing, wrists, shoulders. Balance the position. keep practicing

4. There are many factors to your swing and if you are lacking distance you need to look at the way you are building up and transferring the power to the ball on impact.

Summary: You might be using the wrong type of ball or club, or just need to straighten out your slice. You can do these things when you know which factors to look for.

lift weights for about 30 minutes to an hour every other day

How do i get more power and speed in my golf swing?

probably not if you use a regular (stiffness) shaft in it.

I HAVE A COBRA F-SPEED AND A COBRA 460SZ AND MY SWING SPEED IS AROUND 84 AND I GET ABOUT 15 MORE YARDS OUT OF MY 460SZ. I WOULD RECOMMEND TRYING ONE, BY THE WAY MY HANDICAP IS 4!!

What you need to do is hit several different shafts to see which works best for your swing

the m speed would work best. i have several friends that play with them. i play with the xspeed hs9 9 degree loft with a double xx shaft in it. and i am a single digit handicap. scratch if u play me for enough. yeah that is called sandbagging. their is a Cobra player on tour that is a member of my golf club. his dad went to high school with me. his aunt too. lol so cobra is really popular. they will all hit them deep though. the rhombus face is great.

If by F/speed you are referring to a firm shaft then your swing speed would say you should be using a regular shaft. A firm shaft with your swing speed will most likely result in either a pretty severe slice or a lot of pulled shots and definately lose of distance.

I am 58 years old and use up to date equipment.
I don't think I can improve my speed and I want to know if my
distances are good for my swing speed?

The more closely matched that your swing speed is at separation compared to impact is what generates distance. your 7iron yardage is good whilst your driver should be 240-250 yards maybe you should push the ball back in your stance a couple of inches and don't get too steep on it. Enjoy.

Well my swing is about 105 with the driver. my ball goes farther than you off the tee, 10 yards maybe, and our 7 iron is the same. that said, I swing slower with my irons. So given that I have normal distance for my speed, you must have great distance for your speed.

My Swing Speed Is About The same As yours and I Hit my 7 Iron 155..but my Driver Goes About 30 Yards farther Than yours but Im a 16 Year Old Kid.. So You Have good Distance For your Speed.

That's about my stats and I'm 14. Yep, pretty normal.

My swing speed in golf is about 95 mph. I hit a 7 iron 155 yds in the air and a driver 220 yds in the air.?

I am not a very good golfer but I love playing. I have always used a regular flex club when it comes to my driver. however, I went by one of our local golf shops and had my golf swing speed tested and started out at 88 mph but averaged in the 90's and once I actually went over 100 mph. should I get a stiff flex shaft or stay with the regular shaft??

Stay with the regular, you probably are not swinging over 100 on each tee shot. the stiff will end up costing you distance and accuracy.
If you are CARRYING the driver 250 plus then you should use the stiff.

I think for a not very good golfer that has an above average swing speed, a reguar flex shaft is harder to control because of the timing of the lag….most cannot wait for the head to come around to square and push their shots to the right.

A stiff shaft in this situation should produce a tighter shot group. most people don't recommend stiff shatfs for beginners or average golfers which I have always thought was short sighted. I have always thought that as you get older, you will benefit from less flex as long as your timing is good.

I would generally say the regular flex is better for you because you need to control the shot not just redline it. That said use the launch monitor that they have at most of the bigger golf shops. What makes sense in theory might not actually be true because of the quirks of your swing.

I just got a 9 degree driver with a stiff flex because the launch monitor showed that the shot pattern would be more consistent than the high lofted driver with regular flex that I was using. In theory the high lofted driver would keep shots in the fairway but I have a slight uptick in the hitting area that makes the loft and extra flex counterproductive. you might find similar counter intuitive results.

most regular flexes are for swing 80-94 mph. In my opinion if your swing is over 90 mph and tend to fade the ball get a stiff flex. you will be suprised will the results. good luck!! Golf is a great game

I have found that the shaft flex depends on many different factors. Sometimes ever if you have a swing speed that says you should use a regular shaft you may need a stiff because you only take a 3/4 swing and come down like gang busters. the opposite is also true, if your swing tempo is like Ernie Ells you can use a regular shaft.

Swing speed isn't the only thing that determines the flex of your shaft, you also have to look at ball speed, which is generally 1.5 times what your swing speed is. I would recommend staying with the regular flex and try to slow down your swing a little in the tee box to stay accurate.

Ive heard it's better to stick with regular flex even if you should be in stiff, instead of going to stiff when you should be in regular.

You may also want to talk to a local pro and see what they think.

You say you are not a good golfer with a speed over 90 no wonder dont change your club shaft change your swing speed if you can slow down a bit you should notice a difference in distance and accuracy almost at once GOOD LUCK

What would be the best flex for me when it comes to my golf driver?

The difference, of course, is that Woods couldn’t play the Tour Championshipeven if he wanted. He needed to shoot 65 in the final round of the BMWChampionship, and it took him until the 17th hole just to get under par for thefinal round, and the tournament.

In an explanation he offered three times Sunday—to NBC Sports, XM Radioand the rest of the media—he blamed only himself.

“I didn’t play well in the beginning of the year and I didn’t play well inthe middle of the year,” he said.

He said he is starting to play well now, but that only shows how far he hadfallen. Woods tied 12th at the Barclays, tied for 11th at the Deutsche BankChampionship and tied for 15th at the BMW Championship.

Three straight weeks out of the top 10 used to be called a slump.

Now it’s called progress?

But there are other examples of Woods’ weird year on the golf course.

He has gone seven consecutive tournaments out of the top 10, the longeststretch of his career. His previous worst was five straight tournaments out ofthe top 10. That was in 2001, between victories at the Memorial and Firestone.

And to get an idea of how he is playing, just look at when he is playing.

Woods is typically among the last to arrive because he is in or close to thelead so often. this year, he has teed off before noon in the final round ateight of his 12 tournaments.

The exceptions were the Masters, U.S. Open and British Open. the othertournament was Quail Hollow, where he didn’t make it to the final round aftermissing the cut with the highest 36-hole score of his career.

As he walked down the eighth hole at Firestone on Sunday, Woods could lookto his left at the back nine that was empty. That’s never happened before. Thenagain, he’s never been the second group off on Sunday.

Another first came at Ridgewood in the opening playoff event. Because of hisFedEx Cup ranking—No. 112—Woods teed off so early that he was the firstplayer to hit a shot in the tournament.

“That’s how far I’ve fallen,” he said, a rare glimpse of hisself-deprecating humor.

On Saturday morning at Firestone, caddie Steve Williams saw a reporter andasked the whereabouts of another golf writer.

“I never thought this would happen,” came the reply, “but he actually hasa later tee time today than Tiger.”

Should anyone find this the least bit shocking?

This is no time to take pity on Woods. He’s the one who created this messhe’s in. but only Woods knows what’s going on inside his head and with hisswing.

He split with swing coach, Hank Haney, in may and spent the next threemonths working out the settlement in a split with his wife.

Woods appears ready to take on a new coach with a new concept. Previousswing changes have taken Woods some 18 months before he figures it all out. Eventhen, he still managed to win at least one tournament, threaten in a couple ofothers and have time to eat lunch before his final round, not after it.

Perhaps the only shock is that he’s still No. 1 in the world ranking. That’sas much a reflection of Mickelson, who has had 11 tournaments with amathematical chance to take over. the next comes at the Tour Championship, andthe scenario for Lefty to be No. 1 will not depend on Woods because he won’t bethere.

They played together in the final round at Cog Hill for the first time allyear, tied at even par. Mickelson was five shots ahead after seven holes, asWoods walked with his head down, not looking the least bit like he was havingany fun.

Woods rarely does unless he’s winning.

“you can tell that his game is inches from turning because his speed isback and his putter looks great,” Mickelson said. “I mean, his game is not faroff at all. it looks very close to being right there.”

That’s another measure of how far Woods has fallen—his biggest rival canonly offer an encouraging word.

They might still meet again, though certainly not as a partnership at theRyder Cup. That didn’t work even in good times. Mickelson is the defendingchampion in Shanghai at the HSBC Champions, where a year ago he took a two-shotlead into the final round and buried Woods.

For Woods, the HSBC Champions is more meaningful than ever. it will be hislast chance this year for a PGA Tour victory (this World Golf Championship onlycounts as one if a PGA Tour member wins it). Woods has gone 14 consecutiveseasons with at least one tour victory, three years away from the record held byJack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer.

And it’s not a streak that Woods can start over.

No Tiger at Tour Championship is appropriate

The higher your swing speed is the stiffer your shafts have to be. When your swing speed is higher a regular flex shaft will flex too much in the backswing on through impact and you will lose the benefit of a faster swing speed, and thus you will lose distance and control. the majority of average golfers will generally have lower swing speeds and would use a regular flex.

Golf Swing speed affect shaft on impact. Slower swing speed need more flexible shaft. Faster swing speed need more stiffer shaft. this is for accuracy and optimal launch angle.

If you'd take a second i'll explain.

Shaft choices are actually based on the difference in weight that we produce during the central fugal force on the shaft. the stiffer the shaft the heavier it will be. Although swing speed is a factor you can be fitted with a R300 shaft if you're a high swing speed. how? There are two types of shafts Tapered and Parallel. Parallel shafts all come straight from supplies at the same legnth. Now this is the bit that gets people.
When you cut down a Parallel R300 shaft to fit say a 6 iron it makes it 1 stiffer and 2 HEAVIER. Heavier!!!! in golf we measure in swing weights D2, D3, D4 etc…the heavier the stiffer. are you with me???

To many guys i know play with the wrong shaft flex and its always to stiff and they hit no higher than worm height. you need flex in the shaft to get the ball up. But i could honestly go on forever. I suggest you go to you local golf shop and ask to use a ladies 6 iron, an S300 and R300 in six iron and see for yourself

It's for accuracy and distance. if you are a young guy with powerful swinger and you hit with a Senior shaft, your ball will fly too high and all over the place. so custom fitting is a recommended part of selecting the right shaft. Many golf stores provide some kind of golf simulator to get your swing analyzed.

What is the correlation between golf swing speed and shaft choice?

We have discussed this subject before, but because I believe this is probably the single most important part of our swing that we deviate from the most on the course, I wanted to talk about it again.

The driving range is filled with great practice swings only to see that the real swings used to hit the ball do not even come close to resembling them.

We have it in our head that the real swing is a little more complicated when we get the ball in front of us and really have to hit it. The secret, my friends, is learn to hit the ball with your practice swing.

Have you ever gone to the range with that thought in mind? good ball strikers do it without even thinking about it because they have worked hard to develop a good rhythm and tempo in their practice swing and they use that on the ball.

Take the next four weeks of your practice and really work hard on making good solid contact with the ball by swinging with a little less speed and more focus on staying balanced and true to your practice swing.

When you watch the tour players on television or in person you will see that their practice swing and real swing are the same and the ball just gets in the way of the swing and the results are consistent shots every time.

That should be your goal, to walk off the range and say that you hit 95 percent solid shots. have you ever given your range practice and score? if your ability is not their yet, slow down, shorten your swing, use a eight iron or nine iron and just make it a point to try and hit the ball solid.

If you can not do it with a short swing, you will not be able to do it with a long swing. if you will truly stick to this kind of a practice routine you will build a solid ball striking game that you can count on when the pressure is on.

BACK 9: Hit the ball with your practice swing

Do you suck at golf?  I do.  I’ve got a handicap almost 30.  Have you ever heard of someone who calls themselves a golfer, but plays that poorly?  I understand the fundamentals.  I’ve tried all of the golf tips.  My technique is decent, but I lack club head speed.  I lack power.

My problem is corporate politics.  If you want to succeed at my company–in my industry–you have to play golf.  That’s just the reality of life in Corporate America.

When you play as badly as badly as I do, people assume one of two things:  Either A) you can’t be taken seriously, or B) you are deliberately throwing the game to win their favor.   Either way, it’s not helping your career.

Fortunately, there is a light at the end of my embarrassing tunnel.  I’ve recently discovered the Golf Swing Speed Challenge.  It looks promising.   Did you know that the average golf swing speed is 85 miles per hour?  for every 1 mph you improve your club head speed, your distance will improve almost 2.5 yards.  That’s huge!

If this work, I’ll shave at least 10 points off of my handicap.  With just a little work, I’ll become a credible golfer.  I’m can’t wait to try the Golf Swing Speed Challenge.
