Oct. 06–PRATTVILLE — When the world’s top-ranked women’s golfer Lorena Ochoa retired in April, many wondered where the LPGA would turn for a new face of the game.

It turns out there are several of them.

since Ochoa’s retirement there have been three No. 1 ranked players — Jiyai Shin, Cristie Kerr and Ai Miyazato. on several occasions, this season four or five players have been in position to jump to the top of the standings with a victory.

LPGA commissioner Michael Whan said the tour has enjoyed marketing the chase for No. 1 rather than a particular individual because of its global appeal.

Miyazato is Japanese.

Shin is South Korean.

Kerr is American.

Yani Tseng, who currently is ranked fourth, is Taiwanese.

Tseng leads the Rolex Player of the Year race with two major championships among her three wins this season. Shin and Tseng will not be playing in the Navistar LPGA Classic this week and will be concentrating on playing in Asia this fall.

Miyazato and Kerr will square off here.

“I’m enjoying marketing the battle,” Whan said. “We have multiple faces. I don’t get to decide who ‘that’ player is and I hope that takes a long time for that to happen.”

Miyazato, who has been ranked No. 1 for the last six weeks, has won five tournaments this season. She is slight in stature at 5-foot-2 and is known for her slow, sweet swing. She said the competition and attention for the top ranking has been a great experience thus far.

“This is not something I have experienced before,” Miyzato said. “But I don’t play in a tournament just focused on the rankings so while I am aware of my position as an ‘information’ I never let it influence the way I play.”

with several weeks between the last LPGA event, Miyazato returned home to spend time in Japan. She also played in the Japan Women’s Open last week. In the offseason, her short game was her biggest priority and she said the extra effort certainly paid off.

“I think I’ve been successful this year because I really worked hard on my short game in the offseason and I feel comfortable from 100 yards,” Miyazato said. “I don’t work on very many technical areas during the season, but I always work hard on feeling my tempo and rhythm and being committed on every shot.”

Miyazato played in Navistar in 2007 and missed the cut. She posted back-to-back rounds of seven-over-par 79 on the Senator course, but said a lot has changed since then.

“I played the Senator course a few years ago but I was struggling with my game at the time, so I didn’t have a very good week,” Miyazato said. “I’m looking forward to playing the Senator course again this year.

“The course seemed to have wide fairways but with many low scores to be had. I hope I can keep my ball on the fairway, hit the green and make some putts.”

Kerr has had better success here. She finished tied for second with Candie Kung in 2008 when Ochoa won the three-way playoff. Last year, Kerr finished tied for 17th.

“I love the Senator course,” Kerr said. “I’ve played very well on it. You have to carry your tee ball a long way in the air and I do that. You have to make a lot of birdies. that I like to do as well. You have to putt well. these are my strengths, and they serve me well on this course.”

Kerr spent the last few weeks working with her charity event and moving.

“I got back to golf the week before the event,” Kerr said. “I’m sure I have to work on all areas of my game. I think I’d love to make less mistakes. I don’t know if this is for someone in particular, but I think we’ve (all of us near the top) would like to do this better.

“Maybe Jiyai Shin does this better than me right now.”

Kerr is the top-ranked American with two wins this season, including the LPGA Championship (Presented by Wegmans) that catapulted to her No. 1 earlier this summer. She has hopes now of getting it back.

“It’s very exciting,” Kerr said. “I’ve always dreamed of having a chance to be No. 1 in the world, and the opportunity is here. so it’s very, very exciting.”

Hey =) Hence the question, do you think i rather change my swing/ grip to neutral in order to make the clubface square on top for much more consistent shots or just stayed with my old way with extremely closed clubface. My coach introduced me a new swing/grip and i tried it (neutral grip and square clubface) and i cant swing to my bestest. I've been swinging with closed clubface and it is much more comfortable to muscle the ball. plus i can hit far and fairly easy with the old swing and my driver could go 265-285 yards. My go to shot would be a draw but we all know that closed clubface can result with severe pulls, duckhooks or terribly low trajectory low if i mess up with my body rotation. Sometimes it does get me really bad in some rounds, pulling all the shots from wedges to driver. So, change swing to get the clubface square or same old swing,practice controlling my release and body rotation tempo? its for the cause for my future =) so i thank y'all for honest opinions. Cheers =)

the closed face will tend to trick you into taking the club away in the start of the backswing this may be missing when you start with a square face so you may need to compensate to get the same feeling as you had before

paul azinger and others used the closed face on tour the trick is to hold the face open in the finish and turn the draw into a fade this eliminates the pulls and duckhook

square face will give you better distance and accuracy…

I heard this term "swingweight" alot. For instance, "Tiger is D4, Morgan Pressel is D0…" should I make all my clubs the same swingweight so that my swing tempo does not change between shots?

In reality, if you have a set of name brand clubs, most of the clubs weights are going to be very similar, even if they're from different companies. so in general, the little differences between the clubs isnt going to matter a whole lot. Some pros will try and tweak their wedges using lead tape on the bottom, but for 99.9% of the golfers, it shouldnt matter.

What is swingweight in golf?

Seems like some days I hit all my short irons perfectly…I don't have to even think about my swing…I just do what feels natural. But those same days I can't hit a wood or a long iron to save my life (typically slice or fade). Other days, I can hit my woods straight and far but I shank or slice all of my short irons, or hit dud iron shots (like 100 yards with a 7 iron).

Sometimes it helps to focus on certain aspects of my swing to temporarily solve the problem (for example, focus on leading with the hips on my wood shots, change my grip slightly, or focus on my backswing tempo on iron shots)…but for each new circumstance, it seems that I have to focus on a different apsect of my swing, such that I start to "micromanage" my swing which gets me all confused, tense, flustered, and bolloxed up.

Are there any good tips for "keeping it simple stupid", so that my swing always feels natural and is always consistent, and I don't have to worry about focusing on this detail or that detail? I suppose this is the 10 million dollar question in golf, but are there any good things that I should be keeping in mind?

Also, I tend to have slightly different swings, stances, and grips for different clubs. Should I try to work towards keeping the same swing and grip for all my clubs?

1. Practice on the practice range and don't think about it on the course. Let you natural swing take over.

Getting a swing that you can repeat over and over again is I guess the most difficult part of golf. I think the first thing to do is to try to forget about your swing on the golf course and just concentrate on your rhythm. think about your swing on the practise range but on the course, keep the swing rhythm slow and easy.

Every full shot requires the same swing. The swing shot not change all the way from a full SW to a 2 iron. I have linked a video that demonstrates the basics of building a good swing.

The only changes that should take place are with the driver, where the ball is played slightly more forward in the stance, the spin is tilted away slightly. This is to give the best angle of contact on the ball with the driver. there is a video on the driver set up if that helps.

Summary – practise hard but when playing out on the course, try to find the same swing with the same rhythm.

A good preshot routine and tons of practice are the keys to consistency…… those are the only tips I have found that work for anyone who will accept the wisdom. and yes every shot should be made with the same basic swing and grip…..If you are changing all the time it is impossible to become consistent

The most important aspects of any golf swing are balance and control, what your individual swing and capabilities are don't really matter, with balance and control you achieve consistency.

If your balance is good then it's control that's lacking, as you obviously have a useful swing then at some point you are trying to play beyond your ability, this is typically by overhitting, but trying to control the ball in ways you don't have the knowledge to, affects your swing.

The usual remedy is slow your swing down to the point where it starts working consistently again. there is a young blog, new-golfers.blogspot.com, that covers the basic swing and basic techniques that give consistency in the golf swing.

BARNESVILLE – With four holes to play, North Schuylkill’s Justine Paul had a four-stroke lead and seemed poised to capture the Schuylkill League Girls’ Individual Golf Tournament championship.

However, there is no sure thing on the golf course.

Paul’s lead quickly disappeared as Lourdes’ Ali Singh rallied.

The two battled until the final hole at Mountain Valley Golf Course, the par-3, Mountain Course no. 2. Paul shot a 4, while Singh carded a triple-bogey, as the Spartans’ freshman finished with a 99 to earn her first-ever Schuylkill League gold medal.

“Wow, I really scrambled,” Paul said. “I mean, I was having a lot of (second) thoughts the way (Ali) kept coming back. She had a lot of good nerves, and I was kind of losing it at the end.”

Paul and Singh entered the final hole tied at 95. Singh hit a short tee shot 132 yards to the center of the green. Paul landed her shot to the right of the green and was in better position.

Singh chunked her second shot, while Paul’s chip rolled 25 feet past the cup.

“I just didn’t want to have to go into a playoff,” North Schuylkill coach John Cuthie said. “It was Justine’s game to win or lose is what it all came down to. but she made that tough putt downhill.”

Paul felt comfortable after Singh muffed her second shot.

“That took some pressure off of me,” Paul said. “I really didn’t hit a good second shot, but all I wanted to do was get it close.”

Paul was able to cozy up her putt to within 3 feet of the hole.

Singh’s third shot was long. for her to at least think of getting the match into a playoff, she needed to make a very long putt.

“It is very disappointing,” said the Lourdes standout, who is headed to the District 4 Tournament next week at White Deer Golf Course, near Williamsport.

“This is the first time she beat me. We played two other times, so I know what I was (up) against. but it didn’t go my way today.”

A total of 12 girls competed in Friday’s event, rescheduled a pair of times due to rain.

While Paul carded 99, Singh finished with 101 and defending champion Kaycee Gutsie of Marian and Blue Mountain senior Kali Boyer each finished with 107. Gutsie won the playoff for the third spot. Pottsville’s Katie Burke came in fifth with a 112.

Paul, Singh, Gutsie and Boyer played in the same foursome. through the first nine holes, Paul and Gutsie were tied at 48, while Singh shot 49 and Boyer carded a 54.

The tough back nine of the Mountain Course would rear up and start to take its toll on all of the golfers, especially the long par-5, no. 12. from the championship tees, it measures out to 600 yards, with the white tees measuring 524 yards.

The hole sits high, and with a terrific and imposing slope to the left, the golfers were trying to stay to the right.

Trouble brewed for three off the tee. The lone player that didn’t seem to mind the tee shot was Gutsie.

“I hit it straight,” Gutsie said after teeing off with a perfect shot down the middle of the fairway, while the other golfers were headed into the woods.

As quick as this game can change one’s tempo, it became a cruel event for the defending champion. Gutsie instead finished the hole with an eight, the same as Paul. Singh, who hit two shots in the woods but not out of play, managed to score a seven while Boyer, the longest hitter of them all, had an 11.

“I just lost it after that tee shot,” explained Gutsie. “My tempo was gone, my entire swing.”

Meanwhile, Paul regained her balance. She parred the 14th hole with a four, that shot putting her on top by two strokes. On the 15th hole, Singh had a tough time shooting a seven, while Paul was going 1-over par with a five to extend her advantage by four strokes with five holes remaining.

Both golfers parred the next hole with a four before Paul struggled on the 17th with a nine. Singh picked up a stroke, then cut another one on the 18th with a par while Paul was scoring a five.

That brought the foursome to the no. 1 hole, and things really got interesting. Singh hit first and uncorked a bomb down the middle of the fairway.

Paul’s driver was to the right and ended on the 9th fairway. The ball was lost, and in the process she incurred a penalty stroke. Singh drained her putt for a par and the match was all even heading into the final hole.

But Paul had enough to grab the title.

For a young man climbing the charts, Scott Blair sure seems to fall under the radar.

Georgia Tech’s senior kicker was ACC specialist of the week after scoring 12 points on three PATs and three field goals — including two critical fourth-quarter kicks — in Saturday’s 30-24 win at North Carolina.

Yet given coach Paul Johnson’s tendency to forgo field-goal attempts — Blair tried, and made, only one field goal in the first two games combined — it’s no shock that his kicker sometimes seems an afterthought.

It doesn’t seem to bother Blair. he has made it his business to think less.

“Coach Johnson was talking to me last year and saying it was paralysis by analysis on every kick [because Blair was overthinking],” he said. “everything I do now is really simple. I’m just going out and kicking. This year, I don’t know what it is exactly, but I have a lot more confidence.”

Blair has made all four field-goal tries, and all 10 PATs (the missed PAT in the South Carolina State game was counted as a team miss as the snap was askew).

Now in ninth place in Tech scoring history with 179 points, Blair is nine points behind teammate Joshua Nesbitt (188) and although he’s well off the pace of former kicker Luke Manget (322), he’s fourth in career scoring by kickers, trailing Manget, Travis Bell (321) and Scott Sisson (299).

The Calhoun native is third in career field-goal accuracy among kickers who have tried at least 20 field goals. his mark of 69.8 percent trails Bell (72.6) and Manget (70.1).

Charles Kelly works with Blair on Tech’s kickoff unit, and although Mike Sewak works more closely with him on placements, Kelly senses an evolution.

“I think he’s more balanced,” Kelly said. “sometimes, you try too hard. It’s kind of like a golf swing. You get up there with a driver and say, ‘I’m going to stand on this one,’ and you snap it or you slice it rather than get up there with good tempo and rhythm and you hit it down the middle.

“Sometimes, it’s the same way with kickers. When you’re balanced and in a rhythm, you have more confidence.”

Blair said he owes some credit to teammates. When he was on his way to kicking four field goals — every one of them needed — in a win over Clemson early last season, he noticed that everybody scrambled away from him in minutes leading to a potential kick situation.

“after the game I talked to several of them, and they said they didn’t want to get in my head,” Blair recalled. “I explained to a lot of them that talking to people helps me not rattle around in my head. This year, more guys are coming around.

“Nick Claytor talked to me before one of the fourth-quarter kicks [at UNC], and before the long one [46 yards], quite a few came up. [Chaplain] Derrick Moore and some of our [media-relations staffers] … it’s a lot more relaxed this year. When you talk it kind of eases your mind instead of holding it all in.”

“White Out” in force

The Student Government Association is sponsoring a “White Out” for Saturday, putting pom-poms or shakers in student seats and asking all fans to wear white.

That may seem a bit strange as N.C. State will exercise its right as the visiting team to wear the jersey color of its choice — white.

Tech will wear gold jerseys, or, for the first time since losing to LSU in the Chick-fil-A Bowl after the 2008 season, blue.

The book on Isaiah

Safety Isaiah Johnson, the only true freshman starting for Tech, was caught peeking into the backfield Saturday when UNC quarterback T.J. Yates completed a long touchdown pass. It was a teaching point.

“things move faster at this level, and we talk about playing with your eyes,” said secondary coach Kelly. “If you don’t have your eyes in the right spot, all it takes is a second. When you play in the secondary, if you let things like that ruin you … you’re done. Once it happens, you’ve got to forget it.”

Tech kicker Blair takes simple approach

I know you have to hit balls till your hands bleed but should I concentrate on ball placement or swing tempo or wrist movement or swing arc or body position….maybe the question i should ask is what should i focus on first….i have played golf for years and have found some clubs im comfortable with….id like to hear what has helped other casual golfers improve their game….THANKS!

The golf swing is not a series of steps put together to hit a ball.the golf swing is a fluid motion starting with proper grip, then the address position. the aim is to hit the intended target. when set, you initiate some movement which triggers the back swing and the body turn to a top position where the club head and shaft point to the intended target and the wrists are ******. then there is a gradually accelerated down swing starting with the planting of the forward foot, turning the body bringing the club to the release point where the wrists power through the ball finishing the follow thru. One doesn't have to hit balls until the hands bleed.You just have to develop the proper tempo for your personality, your dexterity and your talent.

First look up the one piece take away.
Then practice it until you don't have to think about it because its natural.
then (for right handed player) you take the club in your left hand. take the club into your normal back swing until you arm is parallel with the ground and the but of the club is facing the ground.( this is a very powerful spot if your can get here in your downswing.) now make a a follow threw all the way to the ball with your hand while keeping the same angle between the club and your arm. now do this a few times until you get the feel for it then on your last time make the full follow threw.
This is a drill for lag if you get both of the things i said you will hit it further with a lot of consistency

your posture.

For good posture you have to be aligned correctly.

Balanced correctly.

Holding your hands in the right position (naturally hanging toward your mid line).

The ball has to be located in a comfortable position between your legs allowing for a natural tilt down from the target.

You will be in an athletic position which will allow you to be more aggressive with your swing and maintain balance back and through.

It's all posture….

CLOW

you must learn where the bottom of your swing is. pay attention to your practice swing. It should be directly below (in line) with your sternum. this will tell you where the ball should be in your stance. find your balance, it will be more toward your heels if you have a tendency to raise up while swinging. keep your chin as high as you can while still clearly seeing the ball. now….SWING the club and focus on one thing only….tempo, you owe me a beer pal…. : )

i also think swing tempo is the key, keep the speed consistent throughout the swing, try to emulate a swing like Ernie Els. also remember to keep your head still and don't have too big a backswing

You need to focus on the transfer of your body weight through the motion and also keep focus on the ball.

you should work on your ball placement and stance so the ball is in the middle of your stance you should put ur feet together when you are gonna hit the ball then do small step big step
