Festival

The C.S. Lewis Festival, Mondays, through November 1, David Penniman and Rev Greg Brown will facilitate an informal discussion group called “just An Inkling” which will feature readings, discussions and lighthearted debates of works by C.S. Lewis, j.R.R Tolkien and others. The gatherings will take place around the fireplace in the lobby of Stafford’s Perry Hotel in downtown Petoskey beginning at 7 pm. The topic is “Lewis and Tolkien” and will draw from The Annotated Hobbit, an edition of Tolkien’s classic novel The Hobbit with commentary by Douglas Anderson. At Emmet County’s northern tip, McGullpin Lighthouse will be “haunted” with a pirate theme and ready for visitors Friday-Sunday, Oct 20-31. Hot cider and donuts will be served and children are welcomed to trick-or-treat each day. The Lighthouse will be open from 10 am-9 pm for the three days. there is no charge for the events or to enter the lighthouse during regular hours. McGulpin Point Lighthouse is located approximately 2 miles west of Mackinaw City.

Just down the road from the lighthouse, on Fri, Oct 29, The Headlands Challenge will dare walkers to travel along a pumpkin-lighted path from the Headlands entrance approximately 1.5 miles to the end, where “Destiny” will be waiting to spin the fortunes of those who travel the entire route. no charge for this event which takes place from 8-10 pm. Boyne Mountain, is turning its Zipline Adventure into a haunted happening on Halloween weekend, Fri, Oct 29 and Sat, Oct 30. The 10-line Zipline transforms into the Zip of Terror, a thrilling and spooky, afterdark phenomenon. Witches and ghosts won’t be the only ones flying through the air. Reservations are suggested for the 6 pm, 7:30 pm, 9 pm and 10:15 pm departures and can be made by calling 231-549-6006. Riders must weigh between 60 and275 pounds and be a minimum of three feet tall. I am a decent amatuer high school golfer who shoots up to 43 (on nine of course) on a good day and up to 60 on a bad day. my main problem is the consistency of my irons shots. I drive about 260 down the middle and have a good short game. however, I hit grounders with many of my long irons that not only kill my score, but also put me in an even worse position. If any of you have any tips, experirences, or methods to help me overcome this problem it would be greatly appreciated. my stance is such that I place the ball in between my legs, should I change it?

And yes I do practice frequently.

Presuming you are right handed, are you remembering that the longer the club you use, the more the ball should be more in line with your right foot? And not to stand too close to the ball. The shorter the club, the more the ball should be "in between" your feet,

if you hit the ball well off the tee, maybe try picking a stronger club and take only a 3/4 swing. a less than full swing will cause you to swing a little easier and help you achieve a better more consistant tempo which may be your problem. never try to stretch yardage out of a club. it may just be your club selection you struggle with.

Well as a former Nike Tour Player and local head pro for several years my advise here would be to work back from the short game. If you say your short game is good work on longer pitches with your wedges till you slowly work your way back to a full wedge shot. once you have a good feel for the full wedge keep working back down your irons. good luck and keep practicing.

just forget about the ball. pretend your swinging on plane and the ball happens to get in the way. finish the swing, swing through the ball and you should be fine. adress the ball by lining it up with your pant zipper on long iron shots.

you're probably lifting your swing plane on your irons. if you are a tall player, the woods may be a comfortable length but the shorter iron shafts may cause you to hunch over. this is problematic because your body will naturally want to extend during the swing. best bet to fix this is to check your stance carefully. don't hunch your back or bend your knees excessively. rather bend from the hip, keep your back straight and let your arms hang down. this position should encourage a consistent swing plane and consistent contact with your irons. always check your stance first if you are hitting poorly. good luck.

Look I am not going to write a book here , I am a 3 handicap I know what I am talking about .
Pay for a lesson have the teacher videotape you executing a correct swing watch it over and over and practice , practice , practice .

How do I generate a more consistent golf swing?

For as long as you can remember, you have known how to walk and run. this makes the entire process, including long-distance running, seem natural and easy. however, the truth of the matter is that you can’t assume that you are running with proper form just because “you’ve been doing it since you were three”. Think about swimming for a second. The fast, efficient swimmers always tell you one thing; proper form and technique is the key.

Running is the same way, and believe it or not, you running posture probably lacks the fundamentals that will dramatically help your time. Make these easy fixes to how you run and you will find it is much easier to avoid walls and run harder.

First, lean forward while keeping your back straight.

You shouldn’t be tripping or losing balance, but you should come close to it! Force your feet to stay under your body. by doing so, running will feel more instinctual and you won’t find yourself concentrating on putting one foot in front of the other.

Second, do the best you can to keep your weight off your feet.

You want as little contact with the ground as possible. Do not land your heels. Try and land on the middle of your foot and keep the center of gravity in front of you. Mastering this technique is very difficult as is opposite to what you are used to doing. Let me throw in a quick suggestion: try running with bare feet. however strange this may seem, it actually helps. without the shoe there to absorb the impact of each step (like you’re used to), your feet will hit the ground lighter and quicker to avoid pain.

Third, check your vertical distance with each step.

The more bobbing up and down you do with each step, the more energy you’re wasting. Training to run faster is hard when you first start because your strides tend to be short. Longer strides will come with experience, but regardless of your level you can try and improve.

Fourth, keep your vision focused.

If you are running a marathon, this might not be quite as important as it would be to a sprinter. either way, however, it is of considerable importance. The common trend with all four of these fixes is using every ounce of energy to go one direction, forward. Keeping your vision focused helps you concentrate on your goal and nothing else. I guarantee that by applying these changes to your running you will have substantial improvements in posture, efficiency, and, most importantly, your time. I recommend these tips to all runners that face problems hitting walls. you should especially keep an eye on these basics if you are just entering the world of running, or training for your first marathon.

Mickelson’s latest opportunity comes in this week’s Tour Championship in Atlanta. The season-ending event, with only 30 golfers eligible to play in it, presents a real good chance for Mickelson to become No. 1 in the world since Woods did not qualify for the event.

Mickelson can get to No. 1 for the first time in his career by winning at East Lake Golf Club, where he is the defending champion, or by finishing in no more than a three-way tie for second.

During a press conference Wednesday at East Lake, Mickelson discussed that topic as well as how his game is rounding into shape for the upcoming Ryder Cup matches in Wales. Here’s what Lefty had to say on those topics and others.

MODERATOR: we want to thank our defending champion, welcome him to the media center here at the Tour Championship presented by Coca-Cola. 10th in the standings but bringing some momentum from the final round at the BMW Championship. Talk about coming to East Lake and defending this tournament.

PHIL MICKELSON: well, I’m looking forward to coming back here. we all enjoy finishing the year here at East Lake. It’s a wonderful test of golf. and last year with the new Mini Verde greens, the subtleties of the golf course came out. When the course is wet, the greens are soft, and speeds aren’t very quick, the subtleties don’t quite come out the way they did last year. last year I thought it was a great upgrade, and obviously I’m biased because I ended up winning. But I think that the greatness of the course really comes through.

Q. last year there was a lot made of when you won, the putting tips or work you had done with Stockton. can you talk about where you are with that right now, how that has evolved, if you’re doing the same thing as a year ago?

PHIL MICKELSON: Yeah, I saw him last week and spent a couple days with him, and it’s very similar. I’ve had a good year with him now, and I feel like this year has been the first year in a while, in a few years, that I’ve had some good direction on the greens. and it’s progressively gotten better. I mean, last year it all just clicked this week. But for the most part, it’s been a slower progression into consistency on the greens, and after a year of spending time with him, I feel like it’s continuing to improve.

Q. you had talked earlier about you thought maybe the FedEx Cup had prepared you guys better for the Ryder Cup; you guys were sharper for the Ryder Cup than maybe you had been before there was a FedEx Cup. can you just talk about why that is and why you think that you guys might be going over to Wales a little bit sharper than maybe The K Club or Valhalla, places like that?

PHIL MICKELSON: In the past before team events, we would have six weeks off after the last major championship, the PGA, where guys would let their — kind of shut it down. With the FedEx Cup it’s kept our games sharp, and so the by-product has been we’ve had great performances in the last three team competitions, but more than that, the FedEx Cup has brought the best players together to compete against each other four more times a year and has kept golf in the spotlight throughout the end of the summer, and I think that’s been a real plus for the game. Q. do you feel a little bit better maybe going — your comment, maybe going to Wales, feel a little bit better than you did going to the K Club or going to some of those other places, starting out with confidence a little bit higher, do you think? PHIL MICKELSON: well, we have a lot of guys here this week on the U.S. Team that are competing this week that have been working hard on their game to keep it sharp and will be competitively ready. It’s very easy to just continue to play one more week. It’s very difficult to turn it off and try to turn it back on six weeks later. Q. Several things could happen this week. If you win you’d be the No. 1 player in the world, you’d be the only guy ever to successfully defend this championship, probably be Player of the Year, and yet still all of the stars would have to align correctly in order for you to win the FedEx Cup. do you think that’s right, or is there another tweaking in the system that needs to be made so that those kinds of year-long things matter more than these last four events? PHIL MICKELSON: I haven’t played well in the first three FedEx Cup events, and so you have to have some value to those events. and you can’t have it all just be — just come down to one event. I guess you could, but I haven’t played well enough in the first three events. If I had played halfway decent, I would be in a position to control my own destiny. I started out third or fourth, started out in good position, but because of my play, I am where I’m at. Q. Would you just reflect and kind of appraise this season? it started slow, you had the great win at Augusta, then you faced 1,000 questions about No. 1, No. 2, your health, Amy’s, just what are you going to look back on this year? PHIL MICKELSON: well, the last 16 months has been an interesting 16 months. as a family we’ve been through a lot. and the Masters made — kind of made the year for me. it meant a lot to us emotionally, it meant a lot to me personally. and I look back at the year, and it really comes down to that one event. I mean, there were other events I played okay in, but I haven’t won any other events yet. for me the year was kind of salvaged by that Masters win. That’s how much that tournament means to me. Q. Dustin Johnson is coming off a year in which he had two near misses in majors. having been there yourself and recovered, what’s it going to take for him to feel comfortable again in a major setting? PHIL MICKELSON: Probably just another major. I think he’s going to play well in the next major. He’s going to feel comfortable, and his golf game continues to put him in contention. He’s an incredible talent, and he’s got a lot of moxie to him. He’s got a real ability to take things head on, to try shots, to challenge himself. He’s not afraid of failure, and that’s going to lead to further success for him. Q. Just talking about what the Masters meant to you this year, it seemed like when you won that in 2004, it was about you and it was about breaking through and finally getting that major victory. Did it feel like last year — this year’s win was almost about Amy and about your family? from the fans’ perspective, too, it was something beyond just an accomplishment for you. PHIL MICKELSON: it was a very emotional experience. it was a more emotional experience than just winning a golf tournament for me and for us, and that moment was — it meant a lot. it just meant a lot to us to be able to share something like that, to share that kind of joy given the last year or so. But things have been going much better. I mean, we’re in a much better place, and I’m excited about that. Q. I was talking to Corey Monday about the 30th anniversary of Caddyshack, and he picked you as the guy on his team this year that knew more about Caddyshack than anything else, that kept you guys going. can you talk about why that movie has endured so much, and would you put your Caddyshack knowledge against anybody out here? PHIL MICKELSON: No, there’s guys that know more useless information than I do (laughter) — Q. That’s not what he said. PHIL MICKELSON: But I will share with you a little tidbit about that movie that not many people know about, and the gentleman who created that movie, who wrote it and who I believe produced it and put it all together ended up killing himself before the movie was ever released, about a month before, because the critics had beaten it up so bad, and he was so overcome by this that he ended up taking his own life and not being able to enjoy the success that this movie has had, and I think that’s too bad. Q. I was wondering if you can just kind of speak to all the different variables that are still on the table for this week. You’ve got a pretty big tournament in itself. You’ve got $10 million that looks more wide open than ever, you’ve got a Player of the Year possibly being settled this week, you’ve got the potential for world No. 1. Paul Casey has got his own little things to prove to people overseas. it seems like there’s a lot of subplots even minus Tiger from the equation? PHIL MICKELSON: I could discuss all that and all the subplots, but nobody discusses it better than you (laughter), so I’ll let you take care of that for me if that’s all right. Not to cut you off, but it’s an exciting week, yeah, you’re right. a lot can come of this week, and whoever plays well has a lot to gain. Q. I wanted to ask you about two holes we’re going to stream on-line this week. The first is No. 1. can you take us tee to green your club selection, expectations for scoring on the opening hole? PHIL MICKELSON: that opening hole is a fairly tight fairway. of course all the fairways out here to me look tight, but No. 1 looks even more so because you can’t actually see the ball land. you hit over a crest. you have a pretty good idea of the definition of the fairway, but you don’t actually see it land. so that makes the tee shot a little bit challenging. it also is usually slightly into the wind, which makes hitting the fairway a little bit tougher. But once you can — if you can get the ball in the fairway, it’s only a wedge or a 9-iron and you’re thinking birdie. But if you’re playing out of the rough, you’re fighting for par. Q. and then also the finishing hole, No. 18, is that a where you’re just trying to get it on and two-putt? Also, what do you think about that as a finishing hole being a par-3, which is a little unusual? PHIL MICKELSON: It’s a cool finishing hole. you won’t have too much turnover because the opportunity for a birdie isn’t really there, but there’s a good opportunity to gain a shot by making par. But it doesn’t have the two- or three-shot swing possibilities like other finishing holes may. But I think it’s a great hole because you can make up a shot fairly easily with such a tough par. But really you’re just trying to hit the green and then make a 30-foot putt if you hit a really good shot. The ability to get the ball close on that green with such a long iron isn’t really there. I mean, you need a lot of luck. so really you’re just trying to hit a good shot on the surface and make a putt. Q. you said the Masters sort of salvaged this year, but if you win this week, you go to No. 1, you’re Player of the Year. Does it turn magically into your best season ever? PHIL MICKELSON: well, an additional win would add a lot, but even without the Masters it’s made the year for me. If I were able to win another event, which we only have really one more, then that would certainly add a lot more to the year, yes. Q. You’ve been asked 100 times, but it’s timely again. The No. 1; that would be a boost obviously. PHIL MICKELSON: it would. I mean, I’d love to take advantage of the opportunity. I don’t follow the ranking points and so forth, but I know that I’ve had multiple opportunities for months, and I haven’t played well enough to do it. Hopefully I do this week. Q. I’d like to jump ahead to next week for a second. None of the team has been to Wales, none of our team, and Graeme McDowell says that that is going to be a bigger home field advantage for the Europeans than it might have been in some of the other venues where they’ve played, weather, the course conditions, that sort of thing. do you see that coming up, and how do you anticipate perhaps overcoming that? PHIL MICKELSON: It’s always been a challenge playing in Europe. I don’t know how Wales would be more difficult than any of the other places we’ve played at, whether it’s The K Club or Valderrama or Belfry or what not. It’s always going to be a challenge there. In fact, of the seven teams I’ve been on, I’ve never won a Ryder Cup over there. this is my eighth team and fourth opportunity, and I think it would be very cool if we were able to do that. But saying that and accomplishing it is a different thing. We’re going to be an underdog, we’re playing a very good, strong European team and it’ll be a challenge. But I think the U.S. players are going to be sharp and at least make it a good match. Q. you said that the Masters was kind of the highlight of the year. Did you have a hard time – PHIL MICKELSON: for me. Q. I understand that. well, maybe for other people. Did you have a hard time getting up for events after that? PHIL MICKELSON: I wouldn’t say that, but my performance certainly would lead you to believe it. But I was excited about playing other events. I mean, I was really motivated and excited about the U.S. Open and the other majors, as well. But I wasn’t able to put together my best play. Even the Masters I didn’t feel like I played my best, I was just able to work my way around that golf course. that golf course gives you a chance to recover, and if I hit some poor shots I was able to salvage pars with my short game. I actually feel like I’m playing better now heading into this week. I feel like I’m playing the best I’ve played this year heading into this week. MODERATOR: thank you, Phil. good luck this week. Mickelson Has Another Chance this Week to Knock Woods off Top Spot

Whatever you’re looking for, Priceline.com has introduced a new feature that makes it easier to find the hotel freebie of your dreams at http://www.priceline.com/freebies.

“Increasingly freebies are becoming a staple for hotels of almost any star level to differentiate themselves, especially in this economy,” said Priceline spokesman Brian Ek. “What we’re finding is that consumers are looking for freebies and they value them, in some cases as much or more than a really good rate.”

Priceline has listed hotels with freebies before, but until now, “there wasn’t a way to conveniently see who was offering what in a macro sense. You could not easily compare,” Ek said.

The new feature assembles freebies “in a searchable way, so that a visitor to the site could mine our hotel database to see what’s available.”

Most consumers will probably search by location. Type your destination into the white box next to “find my deal” on the Priceline.com/freebies page. Enter Atlanta, for example, click “free breakfast,” and 20 choices pop up with details on the offers. Click on the “see dates” feature on the right for a calendar.

You can also filter results by a particular freebie. “If you wanted to take a golf vacation, for example, you’re probably flexible in terms of where you want to go,” Ek said. Clicking on the “golf credit” box brings up hotels in Tucson, Ariz., Hawaii and Chesapeake Bay, Md., each offering free golf with a stay.

The new Priceline feature has a total of 10 freebies to choose from: free breakfast, free parking, golf credit, spa credit, room upgrade, resort credit, kids stay free, free nights, hotel extras and instant discount.

The instant discount lists additional dollars off standard rates for stays on certain dates. “You would see this elsewhere on the site, but in the freebies section, all of the hotels offering date-specific discounts are assembled for easy comparing,” Ek explained.

Hotel extras include children’s activity kits, complimentary drinks, coupons for stores, casino credits, or credits or coupons toward food.

For my family, free breakfast is the must-have in every hotel we stay in. And while it does save bucks, it’s actually more about convenience. It’s the most efficient way for us to get what we want in the morning without a lot of fuss, allowing us to quickly get out of the hotel and on our way to the day’s activities. We don’t have to waste time hunting down a restaurant in an unfamiliar city, and even the simplest lobby buffets tend to provide something for everyone. one of my kids wolfs down two bowls of cereal; the other prefers to sleep in a bit and grab a bagel to go.

For other travelers, getting a freebie can be a risk-free way to try something. maybe you wouldn’t pay for a children’s activity kit, but if you have kids and you’re choosing between two hotels with similar rates, you might as well book the one with the kit. or maybe you’ve never been to a spa, but a free massage might be a fun way to try one.

Free breakfast? Search for hotel freebies

Golf is a popular sport which is why a lot of the tournaments are shown on television. you may not yet play like Tiger Woods but to become better in the game, it will be helpful to follow the following three full golf swing lessons.

First lesson, you need a good shoulder turn to be able to hit the ball properly and let it land close to the hole. this is easier said than done because people have the misconception that making the left heel go up too much off the ground will make that work.

In essence, it does make the hip turn which is good but it does not produce any recoil. so what is the lesson here? Simply not to turn too much because recoil can be created not by how back the golfer turns when taking that shot.

Second lesson, you must never let your chin rest against the chest because this will make it difficult to swing the left arm across the upper chest during the back swing. The correct way to do is it to keep the chin up and allow the left arm to move freely across the chest. this will give you the wide arc that is needed to hit the ball in the in the right direction.

Third lesson, learn to relax because you are not able to think straight when you are pressured. when this happens, you forget tips one and two which disrupts your natural rhythm of hitting the ball the right way.

That is probably hard to do when you are in to winning the game but this is what separates the boys from the men. To get your mind off what is happening, try to block everyone out and picture yourself in your “happy place.”

Remember the movie “happy Gilmore?” That is exactly what Adam Sandler’s character did in the movie and that helped him win despite the odds.

You might not get all these three tips overnight but if you practice regularly, you will get the hang of things. you have to remember that professional golfers also make mistakes and that they don’t always win each time they are in a tournament.

That should give you a fighting chance because you are an underdog and you have nothing to lose when you participate in the competition. of course, things change when you have done well throughout the tour and people expect you to do just as good as you did before.

When all else fails, try to remember golf swing tip number 3 because the difference between winning and losing is attitude and that is all in your head. until you get it right, continue practicing at home, in the golfing range and out there on the green.

Technique and attitude is what the three golf swing tips are all about. how well you perform starts the minute you tee off which is why it is important to make it count so you won’t have a hard time later on when you are only a few yards left from the hole.

If you get lucky, you may even do a “Hole in One” which does not happen very often. That will of course make you move on to the next hole that could be more challenging than the previous one.

It is all about you when you are out there on the green and success can only be achieved by following these golf swing tips.

im going to a practice range for the first time tommrow and was wondering like what each club and stuff is used for cuz i have a whole set of clubs balls shoe etc or what are some tips about my swing?

first you need to know that the putter is used on the green. The higer number iron the easier it is to hit the less distance it will go. The really big clubs go the furthest and you use a tee. For your first time grip the club with all ten fingers and keep your hands close together. also keep your feet parallel with the imaginary line from the ball to your target and stick your butt out. Good luck!

Keep your head down and swing loose.I would advise you to see a pro and learn the basics of the game before you go smacking balls with no purpose. Once you have accomplished developing a swing of sorts, learn the etiquette of the game before you go to a golf course. There are enough players out there who know nothing.We need no more.

What are some basic golf tips?

GLASGOW — The change in weather and the lower temps have caused  temporary recalculations of the fishing patterns at Barren, but fish are still being caught. The fall crappie season seems to be starting early with good catches of slabs being reported before temperatures dropped. Talked to a fishing buddy Tuesday night who had kept 15 good ones that day but things had definitely slowed down a bit. Also visited with a couple of bass fishermen who had been Tuesday and noticed that action had slowed since the same time last week. they caught about 15 bass but only three were keepers. The cooler water will eventually lead to even better fishing than before but it takes a couple of days of adjustments. a 4.7 pound largemouth won the United way tournament held over the weekend on Barren. The overall tournament winners were Wayne Wright and Mitch Lewis of Greensburg with 16.47 pounds, the biggest at 4.5 pounds. The big fish award for the 4.7 pounder went to Brad Roberts of Somerset. He and his pardner, Brian Wilson, took second place in the tournament at 13.08 pounds. third place went to Gary Horn and Ralph Blankenship of Scottsville at 11.69 pounds. The tournament resulted in an $1,100 donation to United way. on Wednesday morning the lake level stood at 551.5, just a half foot below summer pool. Haven't had a report yet on hybrids or from the Cumberland River.   The Kentucky Afield TV show this weekend will feature twin brothers on an elk hunt in eastern Kentucky and a segment on training hunting dogs. The show airs Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. and repeats at 3 p.m. Sunday on KET.   as I've noted before, dove hunting was the last shooting sport I decided to forego. I must admit, I liked to shoot that old shotgun, even though I never got good at it. it was embarrassing at times since I usually hunted with some really good shots and I took my share of good natured ribbing about my abilities, or lack thereof. in this week's Kentucky Afield column, outdoor writer Lee McClellan gives some tips on improving your shooting skills, whether it be in the field on on the trap range. his report follows:   I embarrassed myself the first few times I tried late season dove hunting. I thought I’d grown into a decent wing shot until I tried hunting doves in early October.  I learned to hit those slow and close early season doves with some consistency, and this buoyed false confidence. When I tried hunting those high-flying, twisting, curling, wind-riding missiles that are October doves, I failed miserably. it took me several trips before I downed a single bird. I thought I knew something about hunting birds with a shotgun, but actually, I knew nothing at all. The doves I folded at that time came completely from instinct. I had no idea about proper shotgun form or technique. If you would’ve asked me then if I preferred the swing-through method or the sustained lead, I would’ve nodded in agreement with a confused smile on my face in a vain attempt to not look foolish. Hunters use the swing-through and sustained lead techniques for correctly swinging the shotgun to place the proper lead on a moving target. Proficiency in one or both of these methods grows in importance as dove season wears on into October with waterfowl season looming on the horizon. Late season doves and waterfowl both require long pass shots, quartering shots and overhead shots along with climbing and diving shots. “I use the swing-through method where you start behind the bird and swing through it,” said Rocky Pritchert, migratory bird coordinator for the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. “You swing through the bird, block it out with the barrel and pull the trigger. Shooting instructors showed us this method works for whatever direction, speed and distance you face. it is self-compensating.” I tried the swing-through method and hit some birds, but fell victim to a common problem. I would swing through, fire and stop, leading to a puff of tail feathers while the dove kept flying. I hit behind the bird. my frustration with stopping my swing pushed me to try the sustained lead method. in the sustained lead, you put the shotgun barrel out in front of the duck or dove to determine the lead. a little more difficult to learn than the swing-through, the sustained lead method makes you decide on the fly how far in front of the target you must place the barrel. The birds start dropping with some practice. I am nowhere near the wing shot of some of my expert co-workers and friends who rarely miss, but I’ve improved rapidly since I adopted the sustained lead method. I now occasionally hear the words “great shot” or “nice shot” in the field instead of uneasy silence after a bird flew in range and I missed with all three shots from my 20-gauge Remington Model 870 Wingmaster. “Both applications are necessary in my opinion,” said John Akers, maintenance section supervisor for Kentucky Fish and Wildlife and expert wing shot. “If you can do both, you are better off. You will be handicapped in some situations if you only know one method.” Akers explained with closer, faster moving shots like you find in early season dove hunting or close-in ducks, the swing-through method is best. “You don’t have time for a sustained lead with those types of shots,” Akers said. “Cover them up with your barrel and fire. with doves across the field from you or waterfowl well up in the air cruising and looking, the sustained lead is best. You calculate the lead and think about speed and distance with those longer shots.” with both methods, you cannot stop swinging the shotgun when you hear the shell explode. If you took out a driver, teed up a golf ball, and took a mighty swing, you wouldn’t stop when you heard the crack of clubhead meeting ball. You would follow through, just like you should with your shotgun. “my Dad used to say, ‘move your gun out of the way to see if you hit the bird,’” Akers explained. “He meant for me to keep swinging my shotgun.” You want to paint your target with your shotgun swing. Shot doesn’t fly out of the barrel like a pie pan through the sky when you follow a moving target with your shotgun barrel. it comes out as a cigar-shaped string with much of the shot toward the leading edge. this shot string is why you must not stop the swing of your gun or you will shoot behind the bird. “The two biggest mistakes I see wing shooters make are stopping their swing and lifting their head,” said Mark Marraccini, executive staff adviser for Kentucky Fish and Wildlife who is a competitive trap shooter. “You must keep your cheek against the stock and your eyes on the target. You don’t have a back sight on a shotgun. your eyes are the back sight. You must get your cheek against the stock and look down the sight plane or you will shoot high.” Practice with a trap thrower, a box of clay pigeons and a friend before you hunt October doves or waterfowl this fall. have the friend throw clay pigeons sideways so they simulate pass shooting. Also, throw some clays at a 45-degree angle from you to simulate quartering shots. Try the swing-through method or the sustained lead and see which works best. “whichever method gets the bird on the ground is the one I would go with,” Pritchert said. “Find which is the most effective for you.”

Each of the three nines plays about 3,300 yards from the tips, so this isn’t really a course where bombers go to test their limits. However, there’s plenty of trouble to be found, and the 132 slope for the Desert/Horizon combination is a good indicator that it’s no pushover. Clever bunkering and subtle greens are enough to steal a few pars, even from the middle of the fairway.

The Horizon run opens with a short par 4 that feels very tight from the tee, due in large measure to out-of-bounds left and a large tree that encroaches into the fairway from the right. For those who trust their swing, a left-to-right ball flight is ideal to land the tee shot in the right side of the fairway. This position simplifies the approach, which must avoid a front left greenside bunker.

Two holes later, golfers face a short but vexingly difficult par 3. while only a midiron for most players, the tee shot must navigate between sand on the left and an unseen pond lurking short right. to complicate matters, bushes between the tee box and the putting surface obscure the right portion of the green, prompting tentative swings.

No. 6 is a 404-yard par 4 that plays slightly downhill toward the clubhouse. while the wide fairway is bordered by mature trees, this is a birdie hole if played from the short grass, as the solitary greenside bunker poses little defense. The Horizon nine closes with its longest par 4, a 433-yard test that fortunately doesn’t play to its full distance. The right side of the fairway is a minefield of sand traps, so the ideal line from the tee is just inside the distant left fairway bunker. The elevated green slopes significantly from the back, which factors into the approach.

After the turn, it’s off to the Desert nine, which was added in 2002. as the name suggests, this string of holes offers far more opportunities to scratch up one’s irons. it opens with a 410-yard par 4 that bends to the right (ignore the distant flag on the left, which belongs to a different hole). Skirting the right edge will shorten the approach to a green defended on the left by a cavernous bunker and, for those who veer too far offline, water.

Playing to an even 400 yards, No. 5 plays as straight as a bowling alley, with hills on both edges framing the fairway. One hop on the outside of the knolls, however, and it’s into the desert on either side. What makes this hole most difficult is the approach; from the right side of the fairway, the second shot is completely blind. Fortunately, there isn’t much trouble around the green, so players can just pick a yardage and make a solid swing.

The Desert nine closes with a 530-yard par 5 that features everything but a windmill and a clown’s mouth. Longer hitters must take note of the arroyo that crosses deep in the fairway, while bunkers guard the right side. Desert is also in play along both edges.

But that isn’t the tough part; the course saves its best trick for the final swing. A slender finger of water from the pond along the front left edge of the green extends across the throat of the putting surface, making a long run-up approach virtually impossible. there is very little room right for a bailout, so the most prudent strategy on this hole is to play two safe shots and a wedge approach.

While the dramatically different styles of the Horizon and Desert tracks can be disconcerting to some players (Horizon and Founders are more compatible from a design perspective), variety is the spice of life, and Black Mountain’s regulars appreciate the opportunity to mix it up.
