This summer I am working out and golfing. I was wondering if the weight lifting that I do affects my golf swing in a bad way?

yeah it will build more power and flex.

Yes it will affect your swing. Whether good or bad will depend on the type of exercise. if golf specific you will be fine and improve.

if you are bulking up it can definitely lessen your flexibility

It actually does a huge bunch in your game. it gets you stronger. but the main you thing you need to worry about is stretching. if you dont stretch your muscles get tight and everything will start to hurt.

If you "bulk up " too much it will effect your game. One needs a certain amount of flexibility offered by the longer muscles. However strengthening the legs has a positive effect because your stamina is improved, the leg strength will add distance as well as a solid base for the turns.

Ways To Develop Skills In Golf

JUSTIN Timberlake says his golf game is going badly.

The singer-and-actor — who is obsessed with the game — hasn’t had the time to practice his swing because he has been so busy making movies for the last few months.

“My game is pretty terrible,” he said. “you know, it’s that old thing. when the work is good, the game suffers. but you work so you can play.”

Justin can currently be seen in the Social Network and also stars in two other movies out soon Friends with Benefits and Bad Teacher — in which he appears with his ex-girlfriend Cameron Diaz.

The 29-year-old heartthrob launched the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open golf tournament in Las Vegas on Tuesday.

The annual charity Professional Golf Association (PGA) Tour event ends with a party at Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino on Saturday (23.10.10) at which Justin will perform along with Sir Elton John, Christina Aguilera, Selena Gomez, Salt-N-Pepa and Lady Antebellum, among others.

Justin can’t wait to play live but thinks his own set will be eclipsed by Elton.

“I’m going to go out on a limb and say Elton is going to bring the house down,” he said.

Justin Timberlake Rubbish At Golf

I am on the golf team in high school? and I am doing baseball in gym? But I don't want to mess up my golf swing?

Does anyone know?

Just don't swing the bat in gym class. if the pitcher is bad you might draw a walk, or you might be called out on strikes. seriously swinging a baseball bat a few times shouldn't effect your golf swing, the mechanics are so different – don't worry about it.

Many retired baseball players have taken up golf and have very good swings. They actually have some of the fastest club head speeds.

I don't think it would. think about it, many great baseball players play golf (Clemens used it as an excuse for allegedly not going to Conseco's party.)

It shouldnt be a problem.

Dont try your hardest in baseball trust me. I play baseball and Im a bad hitter now because I have an uppercut instead of nice level swing. Just dont start having a level swing

On Monday, the Garden City High School girls golf team will try to accomplish something few teams have done.

A victory at the Class 6A state tournament, which will be played at Manhattan Country Club, would not only give Garden City its 10th win of the 2010 season but also complete its first unbeaten season in school history.

The Lady Buffs have played nine tournaments — winning all nine — including a 44-shot triumph last Tuesday at the regional tournament in Wichita.

Led by junior Mackenzie Thayer, who has been the tournament medalist in all nine events, the Lady Buffs will be trying to improve what they said was a poor showing in the 2009 state tourney at Dodge City Country Club where they finished sixth as a team and Thayer placed 10th individually.

There are multiple reasons why this year’s Lady Buffs team has gone unbeaten.

You could easily look to junior Mackenzie Thayer, who has had the lowest score of the nine tournaments of which the unbeaten Lady Buffs have competed.

You could also consider that sophomore Abbey Campbell’s dramatic improvement to where she’s been the no. 2 player, not only for coach Lloyd Tiffany, but has been right on the heels of Thayer most of the season.

Then, you could see that junior Anna Robinson has also stepped up her performance as a third-year player on the Lady Buffs. And if you looked at freshman Abbi Shaddix you could say that her strong performance in a much-anticipated high school debut season has been another reason for the season-long perfect record.

But then you’d also want to keep an eye on Taylor Morrow, the lone senior of this group, as perhaps the leader of the pack. It’s hard to underestimate what four years of varsity golf experience brings to the golf course each time the Lady Buffs go off to compete.

Don’t forget sophomore Audrey Gerber, who at one tournament broke 50 for the first time and showed promise for the future.

According to Tiffany, it’s a group that is highly motivated to succeed and are having a great time doing it.

“It’s one of those rare groups that comes along just every so often, not too often,” Tiffany said Thursday. “They’ve dedicated themselves to playing the game, they love to play and to compete. They’ve worked very hard to be where they are.”

For Thayer, finishing off an unblemished record on Monday would be the ultimate accomplishment, both for the team and for her.

“It’s just been what I describe as kind of like a dream season,” Thayer said. “This doesn’t come along very often and it’s hard to do. We’re very united on and off the course.”

Thayer, whose scoring average has hovered around the mid 70s for 18 holes this year, says an extended summer schedule and lots of practice has paid off for her and for her teammates.

“I have a better short game and a lot more experience,” said Thayer, who set a school scoring record this year for 9 holes (33) and tied the 18 hole record (72, twice) while helping the team obliterate the previous school team scoring record by more than 20 shots. “I think learning to fight back, not give up and stay consistent has been the things I’ve learned a lot over the past year. I’m making fewer mistakes mentally and that has made me a better player.”

For Campbell, who has enjoyed rounds of 75 and averaged just above 80 for her 18-hole rounds, the season has been one of satisfaction for the hard work put in over the past number of months.

“I worked all spring and summer on golf, it’s pretty much been my life for the past eight months,” Campbell said. “My full swing and putting both have improved. We’ve had a great season and we just want to try and keep it going. if we keep up with how we’ve been playing, then we hope Monday’s our day.”

Shaddix came into her freshman season with nearly the same anticipation as Thayer did when she was a freshman two years ago. And Shaddix hasn’t disappointed. Finishing third in the WAC standings, Shaddix also was third at the regional tournament.

“It’s been pretty overwhelming, I didn’t think I’d be this high,” Shaddix said. “I’m really glad I played a lot in the summer. the mental part of the game has got me going and playing different courses really helped.”

Robinson, Thayer’s junior sidekick, has had scores from the low 80s to the mid 90s but has also seen a progression of her golf game.

“The iron shots are a little crisper, my short game has gotten better, not as good as I’d like, but it’s been another year, and I’m better prepared,” Robinson said. “It’s been so exciting and so fun. I think our dedication to the sport has bee the reason for how we’ve played.”

For the senior Morrow, Monday will be her finale as a high school golfer and she recalls what it was like to be on the team as a freshman compared to what her senior season has produced.

“My freshman year, I felt like I was the only one on the team that cared,” Morrow said. “Now, everyone cares. There’s a very big difference. this is way more fun. I like being with the younger girls. We just all have so much in common. We love each other and we’re all together.”

Morrow admitted that her senior year has not produced her best golf, but the elder player of this group nonetheless has shot a 79, her best 18-hole score of her prep career, and was fifth in the WAC individual standings. Thayer, Campbell and Shaddix were 1-2-3 and Robinson was seventh.

“It hasn’t been the best I’ve played, probably my sophomore year, but things are coming together at the end,” Morrow said. “I’m really excited, it’s my third year at state. if we just play smart, that’s what will make us win it.”

Tiffany said the major competition for the Lady Buffs would come from Topeka Washburn Rural, defending champion Blue Valley North, Shawnee Mission East, and host Manhattan, a team the Buffs have beaten twice by 14 and 16 shots.

Perhaps one way to make a valid evaluation would be to agree that a scientist’s goal is to improve the way we think by changing the way we live.  in some circumstances, a golf coach’s objective is to change our method of thinking in order to improve our performance.  recently, my curiosity set its sights on The New York Hall of Science to gage the event.  The museum successfully hosted the “Makers Faire”, a two day demonstration  of the latest gadgetry as well as exhibits about ‘electronic inventions and scientific discoveries that were intended to elevate one’s state of awareness and individual curiosity.

On the opening day, I marveled when meeting up with a health conscience team named Saagara, LLC from Ann Arbor, Michigan who launched an “App” that supports Health through Breath.

According to Dan Kios,  ”Pranayama uses the power of deep breathing to lead users to a happier and healthier life.  The app’s animation and music guides users through both structured and fully-customizable deep breathing exercises.  some of the health benefits of regularly practicing deep breathing include reduced stress, lower blood pressure, increased physical performance, and sharpened mental acuity resulting in higher levels of energy and focus.  I later discovered “Pranayama” is derived from a Sanskrit word, when translated means ”The Science of Breath.”

Research has shown that practicing therapeutic breathing during golf performance creates beneficial physiological changes in the brainpower and body motion. Measured deep breathing is an invaluable action for correcting missed hit disorders.

Golfers who incorporate a pre-shot swing routine understand how breathing improves their awareness calming the mind and body of tension naturally creating a powerful harmony and pace in your swing. Try this drill during your next practice session and judge for yourself.

Fix-it Drill:

Set up a practice workstation by laying down two shafts parallel on the ground for reference points representing the flight line and toe line.

ALGA coaches teach limbic breathing system to help restore tempo when players get out of sequence, tense and frustrated.

 1.) Set your feet approximately shoulder width a part. begin breathing consistently with three basic components in mind, inhalation, retention and exhalation.

 2.) Focus on solid knees, and with quiet shoulders, rotate them around a fixed spine axis while swinging a club back and through extending the arc while relaxing the ribcage, abdomen and back muscles.

3.) Now, breathe in through your nostrils allowing your abdomen to fully expand. When the body is in a dynamically relaxed state the muscles in your body can move in a less restricted manner.

4.) Hold your breath in momentarily. From the mouth, exhale gently, #1 allowing some breath out then stop, #2 allowing some breath out and stop, #3 allowing remaining breath out and stop. 

When executed properly, you should begin to feel your upper torso expand generously promoting your arms to hang and swing freely from the shoulders.

 whichever method works for you, Saagara breathing technology or old school limbic, it’s important to have a fix-it solution ready in your arsenal especially when anxiety attacks and muscle tension kicks in.

 After adding this to your practice routine, you should be able to walk away with a better sense of what tempo and rhythm should feel like in your golf swing. The entire body has to be in balance in order to support the swinging and turning action of the arms and hands. When this blend of swinging and turning dynamically occurs, the power you create will begin to explode golf balls off the clubface.

 When you work on improving your fundamentals new things will happen in the way you play the game.  next time, when you are out on the golf course and things get out of control, effective breathing techniques can get you back on track. OTTUMWA — the top-ranked Indian Hills golf team holds a one-stroke lead over host Odessa after two rounds of play at the NJCAA Division I National Championship Preview Tournament. the Warriors carded a team round of 574, one better than Odessa’s 575. new Mexico Community College was two strokes off the lead at 576 as play concluded on day one. the teams will play 18 more holes today. “In the first round, I thought we played pretty average,” said IHCC coach Mike Hagen. “It’s a tough course, and we struggled on the greens a little. I thought we could have putted a little better.” IHCC’s Jon Paul Blampied was even with new Mexico’s Jordan McColl as the individual leader. both golfers carded 137 after 36 holes. “Jon Paul shot a 67 in the first round — five under par — to keep us in it. then in the second round we really stepped it up as a team. Overall, it was a really good effort.” IHCC’s Steven Ihm was tied for 10th overall at 144. other Warriors competing include Cameron Munro (34th, 149), Dan Dawson (41st, 150) and Monty Luck (150). IHCC’s Zach Steffen, playing as an individual, was 34th with a score of 149 in the dry Western Texas heat. “We really battled hard in the heat in the second round,” said Hagen. “It’s great to have the lead over Odessa, who plays this course in this heat all the time. NEWPORT, Wales — it isn’t fair. it might not even make a difference, but Tiger Woods, the U-S-A needs U now more than ever.

An imposing three points separates Team USA from losing its four-day custody battle with the Ryder Cup. the Europeans lead 9½-6½, and act, talk and walk like they’re going to be spraying champagne on each other late Monday afternoon from a Celtic Manor balcony. can you blame them?

They have the home-course, home-crowd and home-rain advantage. they have an impressive lead. they have a captain with a beating pulse.

But they don’t have a Woods.

The Europeans trailed after the first and second sessions. But in the six-match third session, which stretched over Saturday and Sunday, they ole, ole, ole, ole-d the Americans into a red-white-and-blue mess. they were mostly spectacular, turning a 2-point deficit into a cluster migraine for Team USA. if there was a putt that needed to be made, the Europeans made it.

So now it comes down to Monday and the 12 singles matches. And in many ways, it comes down to Woods.

He is a captain’s pick, a first for him. But make no mistake: he was the first player that the Europeans searched for when the singles draw was released. the results of his match — he’ll tee off eighth, against Italy’s Francesco Molinari — also could be one of the most closely watched of the 12.

There’s no way around it. This has been the worst year of Woods’ life, both personally and professionally. he lost a marriage and lost a golf swing. And both happened in full view of the world.

Woods, clueless or helpless for much of 2010, hasn’t won a tournament this season. he has exactly two top-10 finishes. he suffered through a career-worst 72-hole performance at the Bridgestone. he changed coaches.

On Sunday he made a four-hole, 45-minute cameo appearance during foursomes play. he and partner Steve Stricker were taken to a Wales woodshed by Lee Westwood and Luke Donald. the 6 and 5 loss was a Ryder Cup worst for Woods.

Monday’s singles match becomes Woods’ fifth major. it is his last chance to extract something memorable — positively memorable — out of a difficult and humbling year.

Won’t happen, you say? his swing is in more pieces than a box of LEGOs? He’s the world’s No. 1 in name and number only?

But Woods doesn’t have to win a 72-hole tournament, just an 18-hole match against winless Ryder Cup rookie Molinari — and maybe even not 18 holes if he plays well enough. he has to be the Woods we remember for only four or so hours, not four days.

Despite the disastrous, almost laughable blowout loss against Westwood and Donald, Woods still is 2-1 in this Ryder Cup. And in career singles play he’s 3-1-1.

You know Woods will be more jacked up than a Chevy at a garage bay. you know he understands what his singles point could mean in a possible USA comeback. if the Americans haven’t lost any ground — or even made some up — a Woods win could have a huge trickle-down effect.

“I think that’s a great spot for him,” said USA captain Corey Pavin. “If the matches go well to start off, I think the eighth spot is a very important slot for him.”

The guy hasn’t had a reason to celebrate since the third round of the U.S. Open in June, when he shot 31 on the back nine at Pebble Beach. In fact, the last time I saw him do a golf course fist pump was on the hotel telly the other night — it was a commercial for his video game.

Woods blew past reporters and into the resort hotel after Sunday’s Ryder Cup play. he later stood still for a quickie interview with a tournament official, saying that there was “no reason” why the USA couldn’t stage a semi-miracle comeback. he wasn’t the only one who thought so.

“We can’t be hanging our heads now,” said Stricker. “I think that’s got to be the message, that it’s not over yet. three points is three matches and that can turn it around in a heartbeat.”

And this from Stewart Cink, who has been the USA’s best player during these matches: “This thing’s just barely half over. we got to remember that. There’s a lot of points out there to be taken by somebody.”

Woods, of course, could be part of that heartbeat and contribute one of those precious points. he could be one of the reasons the USA has a heartbeat.

“As far as I know, the event’s over tomorrow, not today,” Pavin said.

It’s over if Phil Mickelson, who now has the most losses in USA Ryder Cup history with 17, doesn’t remember how to sink a putt that matters. He’s 0-3-0 here.

It’s over if Cup rookie Dustin Johnson, who suffered meltdowns at the U.S. Open and the PGA Championship, doesn’t figure out a way to relax. He’s also winless in three matches.

It’s over if Team Europe, with it’s front-loaded singles lineup (Westwood, Rory McIlroy, Luke Donald, Martin Kaymer and Ian Poulter) jumps on the Americans early Monday and supercharges the amazing and often rain-soaked crowds at Celtic Manor.

“In match play, anything can happen,” said Pavin.

Pavin and Team USA need anything and everything to happen in the singles matches. They’ll need 7½ points to retain the Cup. And for that to happen, they’ll probably need Woods.
