October 13, 2010 – American Hockey League (AHL) Hartford Wolf Pack The Hartford Wolf Pack added a fourth coach this week. Nothing permanent, just another person trying to help the New York Rangers’ top prospects win a Calder Cup and reach their ultimate goal.

Barb Underwood, a former Canadian and world pairs skating champion with Paul Martini, worked with the Wolf Pack players on Tuesday and Wednesday, observing and filming their every move while providing guidance to help enhance their technique, speed and strength.

“I’m a technical specialist who helps by tweaking things and finding little areas where players can improve,” said Underwood, hired by the Rangers this summer. “I just try to show them better and more efficient ways to do things. Hockey players don’t necessarily learn technique. they just get on the ice and chase a puck. in the beginning, they don’t learn how to turn, how to stop, how to start, so a lot of guys just pick it up without really learning the actual technique.

“I just want to try to show them different ways of doing things, and most of them are very open to it. if they don’t like it, then they don’t need to use it. but they can try it, and if works better for them, then that’s great.”

Underwood works with the Rangers and Anaheim Ducks, along with individual skaters. they included Rangers center Brian Boyle, Wolf Pack left wing Justin Soryal and recent Rangers draft picks Christian Thomas, Ethan Werek and Dan Maggio this summer.

During her stay with the Wolf Pack, Underwood evaluated practices and then worked with players in groups of three, videotaping their skating and offering advice and drills before reviewing the videos frame by frame. She stressed upper-body posture, balance and glide, trying to keep players from bending over too much and/or turning on their heels.

“Players tend to lean over too far so you can’t get all the power in your glut muscles,” Underwood said. “If you get too far forward, it just changes your balance, so the first thing I teach them is what the right posture should be. if the posture isn’t right, you can’t get to the muscles that you want to get to.

“The upper body has to be under control. It has to be so still. the lower body is what does all the work and where you get all the power from. the guys who are swinging that upper body and going side to side are wasting energy, so what I try to do is help them to be more efficient skaters so it takes less energy.”

Underwood also likes to focus on having strong core muscles.

“If the core isn’t engaged, then the upper body is moving side to side, and you just can’t move as fast and generate the right power,” she said. “A lot of the guys are kind of choppy up the ice, and when you hit that inside edge, you’re not going to have the glide. once they feel that glide, it’s so much more effortless.”

Underwood said Hockey Hall of Fame right wing Mike Gartner, whose 20-year pro career included four seasons with the Rangers, epitomized what she looks for in a skater.

“He had perfect technique, such a good stride that was so effortless,” Underwood said.

Underwood got into the strength-skating business reluctantly eight years ago because she felt she already had enough to do as a Canadian Broadcasting Company commentator and raising five children in Toronto. but her husband became an owner of the Guelph Storm of the Ontario Hockey League through coach Dave Barr, whose 16-year pro career included 30 games with the Hartford Whalers in 1986-87.

“I thought my husband was crazy because how were we ever going to put it in our life,” Underwood said. “I wasn’t too pleased, but I went along with it.”

But when Underwood started going to games, she immediately wondered why players turned the way they did.

“I told my husband that I could teach the players to be better skaters,” she said.

Barr asked Underwood for help just after future Wolf Pack and Rangers standout Ryan Callahan left the Storm. She soon got involved in using video, studying different strides and finding out how players skated and where their power came from.

“I came up with the idea for video after my husband had his golf swing analyzed,” Underwood said. “I looked at it and said, ‘I can do that with my skating.’ and that’s what I did. I went out and got the video analyzer software, filmed Mike Gartner and few others and analyzed it.”

Underwood then got on the ice and learned about what she wanted to teach.

“I just felt so excited,” Underwood recalled. “I need to be on the ice, and at the time, I was working for CBC.”

Underwood joined CBC after ending her professional career in 1998. She skated with Martini in international competitions from 1978 to 1984, winning the Canadian national title five times and the world championships in 1984. She then performed in skating shows for 15 years, doing double duty as a commentator the last few years.

A year ago, Underwood came out of retirement to skate in the popular “Battle of the Blades” show in Canada with flamboyant former Rangers center Ron Duguay.

“It was a nice connection,” Underwood said with a smile. “And it was pretty funny because we did our first routine in hockey skates because I could skate in hockey skates and none of the other girls could.”

But the couple didn’t fare too well, going out in the third round as Duguay struggled a bit in figure skates.

“We didn’t get enough preparation, but it was fun,” Underwood said. “It’s exactly like ‘Dancing with the Stars,’ only with hockey players and figure skaters.”

Duguay wasn’t involved with Underwood hooking up with the Rangers. She was working with Kyle Stephan, son of Rangers scout Peter Stephan, who liked what she was doing with Kyle and some of the Ducks in Toronto. He recommended her to the Rangers, and she went to New York to show officials what she did and worked with Boyle, Soryal & co.

Rangers assistant general manager and Wolf Pack GM Jim Schoenfeld told Soryal about Underwood and said the team wanted him to work on his skating. Soryal met with Underwood in mid-June and began working with her at least once a week for three months.

Soryal said the biggest benefit of Underwood’s teachings is concentrating more on the actual skating.

“When you’re practicing and working on your skills in the summer, you just go out there and start skating and don’t really focus on your skating as much as you should,” Soryal said. “But once you go back to the basics and really thinking about it, it has to become like a muscle memory thing and just the things that she’s working on technique-wise.

“I worked on everything, especially with the stride, getting longer and more efficient, and keeping the core active and tight so you’re not all over the place. I definitely feel faster now. I was a little banged up for the first weekend, but I feel good now and feel it coming back. I definitely feel more in control, so I have better balance as far as more battling and getting in and out of turns quickly. It has helped me big-time in all aspects of my skating.

“It’s crazy how fast she can turn. It’s like a magic show. but when we’re doing those turns coming out with speed is such a huge thing. if you’ve done something the wrong way for 20 years, it’s tough to correct, but with her staying on you and coming here a few times during the season, it’s nice to have to refresh yourself. and she’ll give us some things to work on on our own, so I definitely think you’ll see the benefits. You’ll be able to tell who’s doing it and who’s not.”

Underwood enjoyed her second visit to the XL Center much more than the first in 1981 for a second appearance in the World Figure Skating Championships. She and Martini were only seconds into their short program at full speed when Martini stepped on the back of Underwood’s leg, sending the couple flailing across a wet ice surface and into the boards.

“It was like one of those bad dreams,” Underwood recalled with a smile. “We were spinning out of control and tried to collect ourselves, though we completely missed our first lift.”

They ended up ninth in the short program, and Underwood said she felt like calling it a career.

“I remember desperately just wanting to quit,” Underwood said. “I didn’t want to do it anymore. It was too hard, too much pressure.”

But Underwood and Martini skated a clean long program, rallying to finish seventh behind gold medalists Irina Vorobeva and Igor Lisovski. Scott Hamilton and David Santee gave the United States a 1-2 finish in the men’s singles, and the legendary Jayne Torville and Christopher Dean won the ice dancing with numerous perfect 10s.

Underwood said she feels she has won over often macho hockey players, some of whom have transformed their skating with the proper attitude and work ethic.

“I haven’t yet come across someone who hasn’t accepted me,” she said. “So far, everything has been fantastic. they all know that skating is the name of the game right now as far as quickness and speed. if players do things right, they can start beating people they never beat before.

“But it’s up to them. I can give them the information, and it’s up to them to do it. Some guys do it, and others don’t, but you have to commit to it and put the effort in. It’s a process. It’s not going to happen overnight.”

Wolf Pack captain Dane Byers agreed.

“I usually do a skating camp every summer, and a lot of this is the same theory,” Byers said. “But it’s the first time I’ve worked with Barb, and she knows what she’s talking about and it’s not going to hurt. you can always improve your skating no matter what level you’re at. and that’s the game nowadays. It’s a lot about skating and keeping up. She gives you the tools, and now you’ve got to work with them on your own. She’s not going to be there every day, but if you take something from it and learn and practice it, it’s probably going to benefit your game.”

Gernander appreciated Underwood’s presence.

“It has been very well received,” Gernander said. “Just like any of us here, she’s here to help the players. It’s not an immediate, overnight transformation. It’s going to take some work and exercise, but as long as the guys are open and receptive to it, it should be beneficial.”

If the Wolf Pack/Connecticut Whale wins a second Calder Cup this season, they might want to add a name to the ring list.

A full golf swing is considered a 90 degree shoulder turn, with a 45 degree hip turn.  This is what we read in all the analysis’ of the golf swing.

Achieving the above physical components in your golf posture proves almost impossible for the senior golfer who has declining physical abilities.

How To Achieve A Full Golf Swing

Kent Hrbek provided the highlight of the Twins’ Legends game Sunday when the hefty first baseman’s fall chasing an infield pop fly in foul territory left a near-crater in Target Field’s plush turf.

But Hrbek was just as hilarious in the clubhouse with other Twins alumni before the game.

“Can anybody get me a can of Crisco so I can get into this uniform?” he asked, trying to squeeze into his pants.

After the game, sitting near Hrbek’s locker, old-timers manager Tom Kelly expressed his concern for Target Field and the mammoth gouge Hrbek’s crash landing caused.

“I was worried that you wrecked the underground sprinkling system,” Kelly told Hrbek.

Ex-Twins catcher Tim Laudner, lockering nearby, told Hrbek the hole was deep enough to conceal Jimmy Hoffa.

Hrbek laughed and bought a couple of six-packs of Miller Lite for his locker mates. Teammate Ron Coomer bought a couple of six-packs, too.

Babe Ruth would have been proud.

In the dugout, former Twins closer Al Worthington, 81, needed assistance to get up the steps to be introduced to fans. Worthington, who traveled to Minneapolis from his home in Birmingham, Ala., recently had a kidney removed and is suffering from a leg disorder.

Former Twins manager Frank Quilici, 71, is on a waiting list for a kidney transplant.

Hall of famer and seven-time American League batting champion Rod Carew, 66, didn’t wear a jersey when introduced because he refuses to put on a jersey since his retirement in 1985. Carew does not play in old-timers games.

“I felt after my playing career, that was enough,” he said.

Hall of fame ex-Twins slugger Harmon Killebrew, 74, wanted to take batting practice but got hung up in pregame interviews and introductions. Teammate Tony Oliva, 72, didn’t take batting practice because a back ailment prevents him from taking a full swing.

Gary Gaetti, 52, the rugged ex-third baseman, is a hitting instructor for USA Baseball in Houston.

Tom Brunansky, 50, will return as a Twins minor league instructor next season after spending a couple of months as a hitting instructor at rookie league Fort Myers, Fla., this summer.

Brunansky raves about the Twins’ 17-year-old infielder Miguel Sano, who received a $3.1 million signing bonus out of the Dominican Republic last year. “The ball off his bat makes a different sound,” Brunansky said. “He’s going to be something special.”

Kyle Flinton, the head pro at Quail Creek Golf & Country Club, played in the PGA Championship last week. He shot 76-78 and missed the cut, but just qualifying for the PGA is a great accomplishment for a club pro.

Flinton took exception with my Tuesday column on the Dustin Johnson fiasco, in which Johnson was assessed a two-stroke penalty for grounding his club in what Whistling Straits officials deemed a bunker, even though on most every other course in the world, those elements would have been scraggle, a combination of dirt, sand, trash and pebbles.

Anyway, Flinton wrote me to offer his view of why PGA officials made the correct call.

“What does the words ‘all areas of the course’ mean to you? To me, it means all areas of the course whether it was in Colorado, Waukesha or Chickasha. but as a PGA member and a local club professional that played at Whistling Straits, the ruling was correct, even though a sports writer doesn’t understand it. the rule was posted in both locker rooms from the start of the week. it is sad that a PGA Touring professional and his caddy forgot to read the message boards prior to the start of the week, but don’t blame the PGA and its officials. And to say that the NFL has it right is absurd. the rules for the NBA, NFL, MLB change with the wind or whoever is officiating their games. I have never seen rules fluctuate more than they do in other sports. at least in golf they are written out for you prior to playing. if you don’t know the rules or decide not to play by them, then that is your problem. if you were to give the PGA touring players a rules quiz, I would say that 75% of them would flunk. you are trying to blame the PGA of America and its rules officials, when the only person you can blame in golf is yourself. Hopefully, Dustin Johnson will look into the mirror and realize this was a learning lesson on the long road to the final green.”

Here’s how I responded. “you make some good points. however, I still say, just because some people at Whistling Straits call something a bunker, that doesn’t make it a bunker.”

Three days later, here’s what I would add. the rules for the NFL, the NBA and MLB do NOT change with the wind or whoever is officiating. the rules can change year to year, after the proper authorities meet, but I assume that’s the same in golf. the difference is golf is this: selective enforcement. if the NFL uses replay, it uses replay on every minute and every game. Golf uses replay WHEN IT FEELS LIKE IT. In other words, when the cameras are on the leaders. What are the chances that all kinds of guys at Whistling Straits grounded their club in the scraggle and were not assessed a two-stroke penalty? Great. but no one was watching, no cameras picked it up, so no one knew it happened. Selective enforcement is by far worse than anything going in the NFL or NBA or MLB. And in the NFL, the rules in Heinz Field are the same as the rules in Dolphins Stadium. Yet you get to the PGA, and the definition of a bunker has changed. When the rules fluctuate week to week, you’ve got problems.

Anyway, enough of that. What really astounds me is the overwhelming support for my column. the only downer to writing what I wrote was I expected the aristocracy attitude of golf to descend on me. Didn’t happen. Support for Dustin Johnson was amazing. here are the dispatches I received.

Dan: “thanks for stating the obvious that everyone is thinking. I love golf, but those anal officials seem to take pride in their inability to develop any intelligence at all. they seem to think this is a virtue. I’m done watching golf and waiting for talentless officials to steal honest effort from the players. who will penalize the officials for the ill defined ‘hazards’ in their minds that ruin our enjoyment of the game of golf?”

Al: “thanks for your excellent analysis of the bizarre finish of the PGA. I think one other element should be considered when analyzing the entire event – the choice of Whistling Straits as the venue! And the ‘bluebloods’ of the golfing hierarchy who have chosen that God-forsaken wasteland for the 2015 PGA! I am 85 years old and have played golf since I was five. In my lifetime I have played 1,300-plus golf courses in the U.S., including at least one course in every state and a number of courses in Europe. I am ecstatic to proclaim that I had the good sense to avoid Whistling Straits, although I have played many of the other major tournament sites. I could not believe the network PGA shills who raved about the ‘rugged beauty’ of that 1,200 ‘bunker’ travesty.”

Richard: “In a group of 100 golfers, I doubt you could find two who know the rules and even less who adhere to those rules. I play to an 8 index and have read the rules at least once a year since I started at age 57. it is certain that I could master the rules of physics quicker than the rules of golf. With groups waiting to hit behind you, how many players who hit out of bounds go back and hit from the correct location? you drop from the spot it went out and keep the course play to the four-hours goal.”

Jerry: “I caught the problem about the ‘sand traps.’ I agree with you analysis of this… Total nonsense!”

Frederick: “I have no great problem with golf’s rules, but that thing the other day was ridiculous. An interesting thing about golf. at the highest level, it is as honorable a game as there is, rules-wise. but at EVERY level below that, it is loaded with nothing but cheats and sandbaggers. Ridiculous.”

Charlie: “very disappointed with the recent 2010 PGA championship. the situation with Dustin Johnson is the worst I have ever seen (and in a major). where were the marshals to clear the crowd back 20 yards on each side? then maybe someone would have identified that the ball may be one of the undetermined x number of sand traps. I have never been on any golf course where players, bystanders, fans are allowed to stand in a sand trap. TV viewers, TV announcers, fans on the course, the player, the caddy, nobody could tell that was a sand trap versus basically trampled, sandy ground. oh and yes, let’s not call it until he finishes the hole. Huh? so I fault Whistling Straits, totally over-rated, over-designed (it does have nice water views). Even to have to post a special rule before the tournament that all traps are played as traps. That in and of itself should tell you that something about that course was weird and something weird could happen. And it did. One announcer mentioned that Whistling Straits had so many bunkers, course officials didn’t know how many it had. What is that all about? whatever happened to waste bunkers and sandy soil? the ruling on Dustin Johnson really destroyed this golf tournament. Watch the crowd reaction when the playoff was over. very ho hum, ‘look who won,’ ‘who cares,’ after the PGA ruling. very anti-climactic, and the proud winner will always be remembered as winning the one the PGA screwed up. And had Dustin Johnson been in the playoff, no matter who won, it would have been at least a fair and honorable sudden death. No wonder people get turned off to professional golf. it is only a sport for the elite, who make or amend the rules according to their home field or whim. And of course, the rulemakers are always right. I’m sure the old Scots are having a good laugh over this one.”

Laurence: “you were absolutely on target. I was enjoying watching a great PGA finish when all of sudden I noticed that the officials looked a lot like the same crews that ref’d the OU game at Oregon, or maybe from Lubbock a couple years back. And I didn’t know that it was OK for fans to stand in bunkers. the officials, expert TV announcers and even the gawking spectators were totally clueless. What a complete mess! thank goodness that college football is back! go Sooners, and just go away golf!”

John: “What a super story! There’s nothing like a group of pompous old men to sit around and make this crap up. Johnson and all of us golf fans got screwed!”

Jeb: “I like your article and have a few more points to make. all other hazards (water, out of bounds) are marked by either a painted line -red and yellow in the case of water hazards or by white stakes or fencing in the case of out of bounds. Bunkers are marked by nothing. Most people know when they are in one because they find themselves in a defined ‘hole’ filled with sand. In this case it had been so trampled down and mixed with dirt, grass and beer cans. My question is when does it cease to be a sand trap? if the sand mixes with dirt and beverages is it still a trap? When I blast out of the trap and sand is on the fairway from the explosion, could I technically still be in the trap if I just dribbled it out? if the fairways are sand based could you say it is a hazard? This is of course silly. just like this ruling. the kid gained NO competitive advantage and they cost him a potentially once in a lifetime opportunity. I don’t care what the rule is, they are wrong. Rules are there to protect the field and penalize someone for gaining an unfair advantage. they failed in both cases.”

John: “just had to write you because your play on words today was so appropriate and apt. I’ve been at the goff since 1933 as a kid at St. Andrews. while that’s late in reckoning golf history, I must say golf officialdom has long been in need of a laxative. As if royalty ruling from high on the noch, golf officialdom does not admit to nor allow for error less its construed authority be brought to question; peasants of the fife dare not question under penalty of death. One of the royal family at the tournament referred to a ‘local rule’ saying ‘areas in the original design of Whistling Strait specified as a hazard would be so considered during tournament play.’ regardless, no one short of daft could possibly have construed the trampled postage-size piece of ground as a hazard, let alone, of original design. come on now! A golfer, particularly of professional caliber, would not knowingly ground a club in a hazard, especially with the No. 1 championship of the fiefdom at stake; with thousands of crowded-together onlooker golf fans and millions of phone-in tattle-tales watching on television, no way! Peasant me, though having been a lawyer, had I been Johnson, I would have asked to see a copy of the ‘original course design’ and location of ‘that’ specific hazard (evidence for the court). Whistling Straits itself is one big hazard and royal arbiters present at the time didn’t have a clue as to where and how many ‘actual’ hazards were part of the course, let alone part of ‘original design’. I wonder the playing area in question was shown on an original course lay-out? the referee, not Johnson, erred in making judgment in the absence of a corpus delicti.”

Jim: “I could not agree more. if they let the gallery stand, sit or otherwise trample the area ‘outside of the ropes,’ then for purposes of the bunker rule, any patch of land treated as such is not an official bunker.”

Derek: “Nice piece on the PGA mess. Here’s my question: how did the PGA establish where the line of the bunker actually was? I watched the replay repeatedly and unless the shape of the bunker was quite irregular (a possibility, I grant you), it’s possible that Johnson’s ball wasn’t even inside the bunker anyway. how did the PGA determine that he was, indeed, inside the original line of the bunker? because he hit off of sand? Put another way, had a child filled a pail of sand from one of these bunkers and poured it onto a grass spot outside the bunker, and had Johnson’s ball landed on that sand, is that a bunker? I know the PGA is saying they have no plans to seek changes at Whistling Straits for the next visit. Bull. they will quietly tell Kohler and Pete Dye to make changes before 2015, among them to fill in many of those bunkers with grass. Kohler and Dye will even get the chance to announce it was all their idea to improve the course, but the PGA will be standing off-stage whispering in their ears.”

OK, let’s hear from pro-PGA crowd.

Ray: “I’ve read many of your articles and have admired your knowledge and level-headed approach to sports, but I think you blew it regarding Dustin Johnson’s penalty. None would disagree that the situation was unfortunate; however the ruling was correct and cheated no one. As reported, the rules officials explained in a meeting and posted notices that stated that any sand on the course would be considered a hazard regardless of location or if spectators or others disturbed it. Sand anywhere on a course generally is considered a hazard and one of the penalties for being in it is that the club can’t be grounded without penalty strokes. mr. Johnson had a few options; he could have not grounded his club or he could have asked an official before his swing. He made a mental error and it cost him a chance at the playoff. if a wide receiver made a miracle last second catch in the end zone but a replay revealed he previously had stepped out of bounds the touchdown wouldn’t be allowed regardless of whether the receiver was aware of the rule. mr. Johnson unintentionally broke a well-publicized rule after making a remarkable charge to challenge for the PGA championship. the penalty strokes were untimely but correct.”

Jim: “the golfers had a notice posted in their locker room warning them of such bunkers. He did not just fall off the turnip truck, he knows the rules and should be smart enough to question an official if he had any doubts, (which he should have, it was obviously sand). He should have called the penalty on himself! there is no excuse for being stupid. how was he supposed to know? just ask, like he should have. the thing I disagree with is the officials not moving the crowd further away. just like you can not have a change in Gallarga’s no-hit bid, or other questionable calls in all sports, you got to rely on the officials and umps or whatever to make certain calls. I hate instant replay, I love booing the umps for what I think is a bad call and stopping the game for another look is stupid!!”

If you’re scoring at home, that’s 12 in support of Dustin Johnson, three in support of the PGA. And none from kooks. Generally, golf fans are golfers. so it’s people who understand the game. And 80 percent of them think Dustin Johnson got screwed.

Naples National welcomes new pro: Bill Safrin, PGA Master Professional, will be joining Naples National Golf Club as its new head professional, replacing Scott Newhouse.

Safrin is currently the head professional at the Myopia Hunt Club in South Hamilton, Mass., where he has been for the past 31 years. Myopia, founded in 1875, has hosted four U.S. Open championships. Safrin is one of only 133 Master Professionals out of 22,000 PGA pros. Safrin is a four-time recipient of the PGA’s Horton Smith Award for contributions to education. he has had more than a dozen of his former assistants become head pros.

Aces three months apart: Stephen Ruffino will probably be playing golf on Nov. 14.
