Choosing between taking a free golf swing lesson and a night out with the guys in Vegas seems like a no brainer. but in this case, I was really falling back in love with golf and I wanted to treat our four and a half hours in the desert with respect.

Big Brothers Big Sisters Get Big Boost at Keiser University College of Golf

Putting is a game within a game and with such a variety of putter models on the market and all sorts of putting style on the market no wonder that golfers are baffled as to where to start.  Putting is in fact almost the only part of the game of golf that a absolute beginner can hit the ball.

Why? It’s simple the putter does not have to travel that far to hit the ball as there is no need to create very much power.  however if you speak to a tour player then they will tell you that putting is the most important thing.So what does it take to be a good putter? The club face is king here and to deliver the club face squarely to the ball at impact is vital.  then there is the swing path or swing arc.  Ideally you would like the swing path to be moving in the direction of your target. then we need to look at the angle of decent or assent of the swing at impact with the loft of the club which helps control the spin of the ball. Where we hit the ball on the club face is vital to distance control and finally the rhythm and speed of the putter at impact.  If you do all of the above and have the correct putter to fit you then you would have to say you would naturally learn to be a good putter.

Let’s look at the club face at impact as I previously said that this king in terms of holing more putts.  So aiming must be important?  Not as important as you might think.  It’s where the putter comes back at impact which counts.  I have seen some great putters over time that aim way off target but get the butter back square to the target at impact.  So the key is to find the mixture of head position in relation to the ball both in terms of forward and back and left to right at address and that’s your head not the club head, the grip, ball position and initial aim. These factors have more influence on the putter face at impact.  Each player must find their own way with the help of a coach to combine these elements to come up with a formula to get the putter face pointing in the desired direction at impact.For a great choice of putters look at Scotty Cameron Putters and yes Putters.

Putting Basic and Equipment

Cat box, traps, the beach, kitty litter, whatever you might call them, we all have a love/hate relationship with these pervasive golf hazards. To be accurate, the correct term is sand bunker or just bunker. They’re beautiful, dramatic, strategic and in the final analysis a pain in the you-know-where.

Despite the fact that the prescribed method of playing a greenside bunker shot is precisely to be imprecise — that is to hit the shot “fat”, 99.9% of all novice players struggle to extricate themselves in a single swing.

On the original golf links of Scotland, bunkers were sandy blow-outs. It has been asserted that these blow-outs were the result of over-grazing or repeated bedding by sheep left to roam the links commons. In environs such as the Scottish links lands, these sandy areas were unstable and often “migrated” with the prevailing breeze.

As time passed, the game and the playing surfaces became more organized and it became desirable to maintain a constant layout. as a result, it became desirable to attempt to control these sandy areas. at first, earthen berms or stacked sod walls were tried. If these proved ineffective, wooden bulkheads were installed. But whatever their beginning, they have developed into intricately designed features, requiring careful and sophisticated grading, soil preparation and at times manufactured sand meeting demanding specifications. what you find on the course today aren’t your Grandfather’s bunkers (or your grandmother’s either).

Bunkers are sand-filled depressions. Seems simple enough doesn’t it? and bunkers are hazards. There’s no penalty assigned as there is for hitting into a water hazard. Yet historically, bunkers presented a more difficult playing surface than turf. Today’s Pro’s will often tell you they prefer the predictable lie of a bunker. nonetheless, as the game has matured, there have been changing attitudes about what constitutes a “fair” bunker. I know, it seems kind of oxymoronic, doesn’t it?

Anyway, as far back as the late 1940’s the United States Golf Association (USGA) began advising course managers on the types of sand that would afford a fair test as well as provide a stable, manageable surface. In 1974, the USGA released bunker guidelines that were based upon their experience, laboratory testing and hands-on efforts.

While there are some interesting tidbits I could share on other elements of the design and construction of bunkers I’m going to focus on selecting the proper sand. Fortunately, sand is plentiful. since the USGA has gone to all the trouble to come up with guidelines, you might have surmised that just any old sand won’t do. how a sand plays — that is, how the material reacts to a shot landing in it and how it performs when a shot is played from it — is perhaps the most critical issue. Particle size is particularly important. When particles are not “graded” — that is, when they are all of similar size — the ball is more likely to plug or produce a “fried egg” lie depending upon the incoming trajectory of the shot. Conversely, properly “graded” sand will have a particle size distribution that will produce a more desirable firmness that can yield a sensation of feel and finesse for skilled players. Properly “graded” bunker sand will also fall into the range specified for the greens construction as well. this will mean that sand blasted onto the green surface will quickly migrate into the green rootzone and won’t overly damage mowing equipment.

Another important factor to the material functioning well within its design is its purity. a sand that is “dirty” contains silt or clay. In sufficient amounts the silt and/or clay will reduce the permeability of the sand, causing it to drain slower, eventually irreparably damaging the bunker drainage system. a course that has a number of bunkers exhibiting this problem probably has “dirty” sand. on the other hand, sand that has excessively large particles or gravel may drain just fine, but is otherwise undesirable to players.

You might think that sand particles are largely round. think again. true, much of the common desert sand of the world and sand in dunes are round. But the round shape also means that they are relatively unstable and they don’t react well in playability tests. So, an angular sand is most desirable for bunkers. they tend to shift less and also exhibit a sort of “interlocking” characteristic that helps to keep them in place even in windy conditions.

There are sands that will come out of the ground suitable for bunkers, but they are rare and some processing — usually in the form of screening or washing is necessary. Because sand is plentiful it is fairly inexpensive as natural resources go. the real cost is in the trucking or shipping of the material. Costs upwards of fifty dollars per cubic yard and sometimes beyond are not unheard of. with the average course needing more than 1,000 cubic yards just for bunkers you can see that the cost could be substantial.

So the next time you curse the course for the inadequacies you perceive in their bunker sand, you might consider that purchasing the proper material, trucking it to the site, removing the old sand, installing new drainage and installing the new sand might well elevate your green fees by more than a few dollars.

A weekly gleaning of news reports about President Obama’s vacation: Where he will stay, what he will do, and references to the Island (described as tony and chic, didn’t you know?) and Islanders that may surprise some.

President Barack Obama and his family will arrive on Martha’s Vineyard next Thursday for a ten-day vacation. the contrast with press coverage on the eve of the 2009 trip to the Vineyard is stark.

Last summer press descriptions of the Vineyard were as gushing as a soft-serve spigot at the Edgartown Dairy Queen.

Under the heading, "Room for Debate, a running commentary on the news," on April 13, 2009 the New York Times asked seven people to answer the burning question: Why Democrats love Martha’s Vineyard? the group included lawyers and Harvard professors Alan Dershowitz and Charles Ogletree Jr., and Vineyard Gazette editor Julia Wells of West Tisbury, who led the navel-gazing pack in the word count.

There has been little analysis of the Vineyard’s charms this time around beyond characterizations of the Island as an elite vacation spot.

On August 4, columnist Susan Estrich provided political analysis of the upcoming Vineyard vacation on the Chicago-based political web site RealClearPolitics.com.

Under the headline, "Does he Get it?" she said that the president’s forthcoming vacation to Martha’s Vineyard is "one of those terrible decisions that has even his strongest supporters shaking their heads."

Ms. Estrich posed a question: "Why is he going to Martha’s Vineyard?"

Her answer will come as no surprise to any Island visitor: "because he likes it. because he knows people there, has friends there, enjoys himself there."

But most visitors to Martha’s Vineyard do not have to weigh the political dimensions of their vacation destination choice. A point Ms. Estrich highlights.

"I’m from Massachusetts. I was in my 30s the first time I ever set foot in Martha’s Vineyard. Elite. Fancy. Expensive. Hard to get to. the Estrich family from Lynn considered Nantasket Beach exotic. Martha’s Vineyard might as well have been an island off of Spain.

"I don’t begrudge the president a nice vacation. but having already spent time in Maine this summer, a second vacation to a place other than the hard-hit Gulf is an invitation for people to think what too many of them already think: the president just doesn’t get it."

Last summer, President Obama and family arrived on Martha’s Vineyard fresh from a mini-vacation to Yellowstone National Park and the Grand Canyon. Noting the first Family’s western swing, Los Angeles Times reporter Peter Nicholas wrote, "no president can afford to look elitist amid an economic downturn, which makes the business of choosing a vacation spot a delicate one."

Fox News picked up on the vacation fallout in a story posted August 9 by April Girouard, "first Lady Returns Home from Vacation to Firestorm of Criticism.

"first Lady Michelle Obama returned from a lavish Mediterranean vacation Sunday with daughter Sasha — and was welcomed back with a firestorm of criticism," Ms. Girouard wrote.

The piece provided various statements that underscored the private nature of the trip. "I think it’s wrong to talk about the first lady’s family vacation as a politician. She’s a mom," Democratic National Committee chairman Tim Kaine told Matt Lauer on NBC’s Today show.

But the critics were heard from. "the trip drew comparisons to the monarchies of old Europe — not to the average American woman that is part of Mrs. Obama’s established public persona," Ms. Girouard reported.

As for Martha’s Vineyard, we who live and work here are the chosen few. Ms. Girouard reported, "the family’s rumored plans for a late August vacation in elite Martha’s Vineyard has also been questioned. Under fire, the White House announced that the Obamas would be visiting Florida for a mini-vacation in August ahead of the expected Martha’s Vineyard 10-day reprieve."

The report concluded with an assessment of the first Lady’s popularity and whether her choice of vacation destinations would help at the polls.

"the fact is, Michelle Obama remains enormously popular," Democratic strategist Bernard Whitman told Fox News, citing a July Gallup poll that measured the first lady’s favorable rating at a healthy 66 percent. "do I wish she had taken a vacation on the Gulf Coast rather than Spain? sure."

Vacations, votes, and comparisons with monarchies past were also the focus of a column in the conservative Nation Review online titled "Raising the bar on the Costa de Sol" posted August 9.

The Corner Columnist Victor Davis Hanson wrote, "the problem with Michelle Obama’s Marabella-to-Martha’s-Vineyard August is not that the first family doesn’t deserve time off but that Michelle, in the past, has gone on the record that the country’s elite (of which she claimed not to be a part) had created one nation for themselves and quite a different for most others … so the Versailles-like aura around her trips suggests that her prior angst arose not because millions were not able to share the lifestyles of the elite but that she herself had not yet quite partaken in the sort of life she felt she deserved — which she is now apparently enjoying to the fullest."

Mr. Hanson also suggested the Obamas have benefited from favorable news coverage. "Of course, all this puts a terrible burden on a sycophantic media with a long tradition of trashing the slightest hint of aristocratic enjoyment on the part of first ladies (e.g., Nancy Reagan’s china). so, just as golf, around winter 2009, ceased to be an aristocratic distraction from the nation’s pressing problems, so too luxury on the Mediterranean must be a sort of federal employee’s deserved state vacation."

Choosing the Right Shaft

Plan for a comfortable, and maybe rich, retirement Retire rich. Those words entice us from magazine covers in the supermarket line, infomercials on late-night TV, pop-up ads online and fliers distributed by investment firms.

Often accompanied by photos of happy folks on lawn chairs, yachts or golf courses, they spur our imaginations even in uncertain economic times.

“A McMansion, an expensive car and lots of clothes and jewelry represent what most Americans consider to be a rich lifestyle,” said Bonnie Hughes, certified financial planner and principal at American Capital planning LLC, Reston. “I consider dressing well to be the cheapest aspect of all that, since you can buy fabulous brands at consignment shops.”

While no one can be guaranteed riches, an investor truly serious about having a comfortable retirement should put aside 17 percent of annual gross income starting at an early age, plus another 2 percent on top of that for health-care costs, Hughes advised.

Invest 60 percent in stocks and 40 percent in bonds and cash to start, stick with your plan as you make minor adjustments and you should reach your goal.

“Trust me, it’s a lot easier to live with a little poverty at age 50 than it will be at 70 or 80,” she said. “Maybe you’ll take less expensive vacations and have champagne a lot less often, but living below your means is the key to successful retirement savings.”

Lacking a realistic sense of what comprises retirement comfort and how to get there, average investors often swing for the fences with their money.

“In the 1990s, the perception was that the S&P 500 was the ticket to retiring rich and young, but that went out the window in 2000,” recalls Michael Boone, CFP and president of M.W. Boone & Associates, Bellevue, Wash. “In the early 2000s, real estate offered the get-rich-quick strategy of owning a few houses, then living in one and getting rental income from the others, but that hasn’t worked out either.”

Those who did enjoy enormous financial gain likely bought and sold early in a cycle or shouldered a foolhardy risk that paid off against the odds. They benefited more from luck than a winning formula worth copying.

Long-term investment success is more dependent on investor behavior than how underlying investments perform, the DALBAR research firm has found.

Its quantitative studies indicate that investors switching in and out of mutual funds receive much lower returns than if they had simply stayed the course.

Jumping out of stocks and funds in 2008 represented a typical error in judgment.
